Aboriginal Culture Club

Mrs Betts, Mrs Scanlon and our Aboriginal Community Liaison Officer, Sonia Sharpe met with our Aboriginal students and discussed the plans to establish an Aboriginal team where students have a voice to all matters relating to Aboriginal culture. Our Aboriginal students voted for a team name, which is the ACC or Aboriginal Culture Club with the symbol of the bower bird as a mascot. The ACC voted in four executive positions where these students will lead the team in semester 2. A huge congratulations goes to: Lachlan Rushby as president, Archie Rushby as vice-president, Laila Paton as secretary and Lyla Green as publicity officer.

The ACC have had two meetings so far and come up with some incredible ideas to raise Aboriginal cultural awareness at NLPS.

We are looking forward to seeing what this amazing team will do in semester 2 2024!

NLPS Book Week 2024

Book Week!!

This week, the school was buzzing with excitement as we celebrated our annual Book Week, with the theme "Reading is Magic." The celebrations started with ‘The Masked Reader’ where students were captivated by the clips of teachers reading their favourite stories, looking at the clues and trying to guess who was behind the costume. The multi award winning and internationally published author Deborah Kelly delighted us with a visit and talk on Tuesday inspiring the budding writers in us and gave a glimpse into the world of an author. Deborah Kelly’s latest picture book The Mosaic will be launched at Belmont Library on 12 October at 10.30am. There will be a reading of the book followed by cake and a craft activity. This event is free and everyone is welcome to attend, please click on the link below to secure your spot.

Book Launch & Storytime: The Mosaic Tickets, Sat, Oct 12, 2024 at 10:30 AM | Eventbrite

Wednesday was a time to cozy up with a soft toy and enjoy the magic of reading a story. The highlight for many was our final celebration - open classrooms and Book Character Parade on Thursday. The school was awash with colour and creativity as students paraded in costumes representing a myriad of beloved characters—from unicorns and dinosaurs, to Wally, The Cat in the Hat, Alice in Wonderland, and Willy Wonka. The staff’s enthusiasm and willingness to dress up as witches and wizards added to the fun-filled atmosphere. The SCR also held their first school initiative with a Book Bingo for K-2 and a Book Scavenger hunt for 3-6. What a lot of fun was had and a great way for the SRC to raise funds to put back into our school.

The wide range of book-themed canteen treats, like ANZAC biscuits in Adelaide, Tuna Mornay and Minties in Melbourne, Pumpkin scones in Brisbane, Pavlova in Perth and Lamingtons in Hobarts, were also a huge hit!

Thank you for all your engagement with our recent Book week activities - coming along to our event as well as helping to prepare the children for them.  What a wonderful community we have!

Rugby League Knights Gala Day

On Wednesday 4th September, our stage 2 rugby league team attended the Newcastle Knights Rugby League Gala Day. Our boys showcased their incredible skills, sportsmanship and determination. Throughout the day we played some tough opponents coming away with 2 wins out of 4 games. The boys demonstrated impressive skills on the field, and it was amazing to watch our boys grow and excel together.

Great work Stage 2 boys!

Art Club – Art Submission – The Calendar for Cultural Diversity

The calendar for cultural diversity promotes intercultural understanding, cultural and linguistic diversity, community harmony and social inclusion across NSW public schools and their communities.

Each year, NSW public schools are invited to submit student artwork for possible inclusion in the calendar for cultural diversity around a given theme. The artwork selected for inclusion in each calendar represents the creative talents of public-school students from across the state.

The theme of the 2025 calendar for cultural diversity is "Learning together". Please see our entry below completed by Aprille McAdam, Matilda Bullivant, Sarah Lambert and Hannah Lambert. This artwork is titled ‘Snake Weaver’ and illustrates students collaborating to weave their artistry and skills into stories that embody teamwork. The blending of different techniques is portrayed through a mix of mediums and concepts, and as time passed, the ideas behind the work evolved, reflecting a shared journey of learning for everyone. The influence of the Year of the Snake adds a layer of symbolism, representing transformation, growth, and the shedding of old ways as the students embraced new challenges. The snake eye is representative of the common goal we all strived to work towards as a team.

We are incredibly proud of the students for their hard work, dedication, persistence, and their ability to compromise, listen, and collaborate by drawing on each other's strengths throughout the creation of the artwork.

NLPS Debating

This year, seven students from year 6 represented New Lambton Public School in the Premier's debating challenge. These students included Will A, Savannah V, Sarah L, Austin B, Chris G, Deniz O and Nishka M.

These students undertook 4 rounds of debating against Heaton Public School, Lambton Public School, Wallsend Public School and New Lambton South Public School.

Our team worked extremely well together and managed to win all four rounds, tying with New Lambton South as zone champions. This is a huge accomplishment for New Lambton Public and reflects the commitment and progress that our team has made this year.

Last Monday, our debating team faced off against Maryland Public School in a knockout round which they argued extremely well, but unfortunately lost. I would like to congratulate our NLPS Bowerbirds on an amazing effort in this year's debating challenge and commend them on an impressive overall outcome!

Ethics classes at New Lambton Public School

Have you heard your child talk about their ethics classes?

Are you curious about what they're learning and how it benefits them? The Ethics program at NLPS offers a unique opportunity for students to develop critical thinking, empathy, and decision-making skills—skills essential for their growth inside and outside the classroom.

What Are Students Learning in Ethics?

This term, our Year 2 students are discussing these topics and questions:

  • Laziness: What does it mean to be lazy? Are you being lazy if you find an easier way of doing something? Or if you spend the afternoon watching movies after winning a big game? Or don’t do the optional ‘extra hard’ math questions? And what, if anything, is wrong with being lazy?
  • Examples and Counter-Examples: This short topic helps to build a discussion toolkit. Examples and counter-examples are handy tools. Examples can illustrate a point and clarify an idea. When learning about sea life, a whale can be used as an example to help show how some animals live in the sea but still breathe air. Now, what about counter-examples? When someone says, ‘Only birds make nests’, a mouse can be used as a counter-example to help show that’s wrong.

Why Ethics?

In ethics classes, students engage in meaningful conversations that challenge them to think critically about ethical dilemmas and communicate their ideas respectfully with peers. These skills not only support their academic growth but also prepare them to navigate social situations and make responsible decisions.

Learn More About What Your Child is Learning

We encourage all parents to learn more about the ethics program—our teaching approach, the curriculum, and the training volunteers receive. Visit Primary Ethics to explore the curriculum, understand the topics discussed, and see how this program benefits your child. The more you know, the better you can engage with your child about their learning experiences. We start conversations in the classroom and hope they continue at home.

Interested in Getting Involved?

While not everyone can volunteer, there are many ways to support our program. Even learning more and discussing it with your child can make a big difference. If you are interested, we do need more volunteers to help offer this valuable program to all students. Free training and comprehensive lesson plans are provided.

If you have any questions or would like to learn more, please contact Julia at julia.kosheleva@primaryethics.com.au, or visit Primary Ethics Volunteer to get involved.

Let's help our children build a solid ethical foundation—together!
