Have you heard your child talk about their ethics classes?
Are you curious about what they're learning and how it benefits them? The Ethics program at NLPS offers a unique opportunity for students to develop critical thinking, empathy, and decision-making skills—skills essential for their growth inside and outside the classroom.
What Are Students Learning in Ethics?
This term, our Year 2 students are discussing these topics and questions:
- Laziness: What does it mean to be lazy? Are you being lazy if you find an easier way of doing something? Or if you spend the afternoon watching movies after winning a big game? Or don’t do the optional ‘extra hard’ math questions? And what, if anything, is wrong with being lazy?
- Examples and Counter-Examples: This short topic helps to build a discussion toolkit. Examples and counter-examples are handy tools. Examples can illustrate a point and clarify an idea. When learning about sea life, a whale can be used as an example to help show how some animals live in the sea but still breathe air. Now, what about counter-examples? When someone says, ‘Only birds make nests’, a mouse can be used as a counter-example to help show that’s wrong.
Why Ethics?
In ethics classes, students engage in meaningful conversations that challenge them to think critically about ethical dilemmas and communicate their ideas respectfully with peers. These skills not only support their academic growth but also prepare them to navigate social situations and make responsible decisions.
Learn More About What Your Child is Learning
We encourage all parents to learn more about the ethics program—our teaching approach, the curriculum, and the training volunteers receive. Visit Primary Ethics to explore the curriculum, understand the topics discussed, and see how this program benefits your child. The more you know, the better you can engage with your child about their learning experiences. We start conversations in the classroom and hope they continue at home.
Interested in Getting Involved?
While not everyone can volunteer, there are many ways to support our program. Even learning more and discussing it with your child can make a big difference. If you are interested, we do need more volunteers to help offer this valuable program to all students. Free training and comprehensive lesson plans are provided.
If you have any questions or would like to learn more, please contact Julia at julia.kosheleva@primaryethics.com.au, or visit Primary Ethics Volunteer to get involved.
Let's help our children build a solid ethical foundation—together!
