Term 1 Week 8

School Uniform

Congratulations to all students who consistently wear the full school uniform with pride. The NSW Department of Education encourages students to dress appropriately by wearing the agreed school uniform or dress code, as part of striving for respectful, safe, and engaged behaviour. Parents are reminded that girls wear black skorts and have the option of wearing black unisex sports shorts on sport days. Jewellery is not part of the school uniform, except for studs or sleepers and watches. Meeting the school’s agreed uniform policy is an important expectation, and we are proud of our school and its high standards. We expect students to wear the correct uniform every day, as this promotes respect and inclusion in our school community.

Make My Day

Last Thursday two very happy Kindergarten students visited to show off their work. Koen and Pippa for K/1B sequenced the events from the book The Great Rabbit, both students wrote descriptions and illustrated their writing. Well done, you are amazing!

Community Art Project

Today Nina, Mila, Mrs Tia and I were privileged to attend the unveiling of a series of Community Art Works attended by the Department of Education Executive Director Mr Tim McCallum and Director Educational Leadership, Mrs Sharon McFarlane. Both our captains looked amazing in full uniform gaining many compliments. Our school captain Mila was invited by Mrs McFarlane to make an impromptu speech about her experience and she was very impressive. At the end of last year, some of our students participated in the creation of the artworks of Biraban the Awabakal totem symbol. Lauren Dunn, the Aboriginal attendance officer, directed our students through Aboriginal Dreamtime stories and cultural symbols including the sun, moon, stars, meeting place, kangaroo paw and waterhole, to decorate painted gum leaves that were used to create Biraban’s wings. Two works were completed in blue to represent the NSW Police Department and will be hung in Belmont and Toronto Police Stations and two in green to represent the Department of Education and will be hung in NSW Education Department offices at Gateshead and Adamstown. Caves Beach is represented on both green artworks.

    Class of the Week

    1H

1H has made a fantastic start to the school year. The students have enjoyed writing about stories read in class and are developing into focused and fluent mathematicians. They are excitedly preparing to lead the school assembly in week 9 and are looking forward to the Easter Hat Parade, where they will create their hats alongside the senior students. It has been wonderful to see the kindness and care they show one another each day. 1H are working beautifully as a team and should be very proud of their start to the year.

    2M

This term, 2M has been learning about important character strengths through stories featuring familiar characters. Our class has been inspired by the adventurous and courageous Nemo from Finding Nemo and the persistence and self-acceptance shown by Gerald in Giraffes Can’t Dance.

These stories have taught us valuable lessons about never giving up, even when things get tough. We believe in the power of “yet” — if we can’t do something now, it just means we haven’t mastered it yet! Like Nemo’s determination to find his way home and Gerald’s bravery to dance despite challenges, we are learning to be the best we can be. Both characters show us that embracing our individuality is important and that being different is a strength, not a limitation.

Nemo and Gerald are great role models for us all. By following their example, 2M is building a classroom community filled with resilience, courage, kindness, and acceptance. We’re excited to keep growing together and supporting each other to become the best versions of ourselves!

    Other School News

    Art Club

Art Club has kicked off for 2026, and creativity is already flowing!

This term, students are creating beautiful botanical artworks inspired by Australian artist Bernadette Twomey. Their concept designs are looking fabulous, and today the paint was out as they began bringing their backgrounds to life.

We can’t wait to see these pieces develop over the term!

    Hunter Water Show

Last Monday, our K-2 students had the pleasure of experiencing an engaging and interactive show from Hunter Water.

From the very beginning, the students were captivated by the presentation and eagerly participated throughout. They learned about where our water comes from, how it is treated, and the important role we all play in conserving this precious resource.

A big thank you to Hunter Water for delivering such an informative and enjoyable experience for our students!

    Grow Your Mind

As we come to the end of the year, it is important to reflect on the people we are thankful for in our lives, special moments we enjoyed and what we are looking forward to in the New Year!

Displaying GRATITUDE for what we have, is an essential part of our well-being.

At the end of everyday use your ELEPHANT to remember:

    • something that went well
    • one person you are thankful for
    • what you are looking forward to tomorrow

You could start your own GRATITUDE journal.

    Environmental Group

The Enviro Group have been busy picking the end of summer crops and clearing out our garden beds in preparation for planting our winter garden. Students have enjoyed taking home green beans, silverbeet and celery and we are excited to work out what vegetables to grow in the cooler weather.

    Learning and Support

    Hearing Loss

Hearing loss affects 1 in 10 children and 1 in 3 adults, and if left undetected, it can impact learning, social interaction, and overall well-being.

At our school, we use Sound Scouts, a fun and easy-to-use hearing screening app, to help identify students who may be experiencing hearing loss. Sound Scouts allows us to quickly assess hearing in a comfortable, non-intrusive way right here at school. By identifying potential hearing issues early, we can ensure students get the support they need to succeed in learning and social activities.

If you have any concerns about your child’s hearing, please contact your classroom teacher to organise a Sound Scouts screening. Depending on the results, a referral to see a professional audiologist may be recommended to provide further assessment and support.

Charlie and her team will represent the region in a few weeks at the Hunter Basketball Trials, and we are so proud to see her hard work, dedication and love of the game paying off.

    Fast Fives Soccer - Years 5 & 6

Today we were lucky enough to have 42 Stage 3 students proudly represent our school at the Fast Fives Soccer Gala Day.

Although we had a light shower to start the morning, it certainly didn’t dampen spirits, with plenty of great teamwork and lots of victories throughout the day.

A big thank you to the parents who assisted by taking teams to their games. Your support helped make the day run smoothly and is greatly appreciated.
