Drummoyne Public School

Term 3 Week 1 Newsletter - Friday 25 July 2025

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

Learning on Country with Uncle Jimmy

On Monday, our staff welcomed Aboriginal Elder Uncle Jimmy Smith, a respected cultural custodian and storyteller from the local community, for a special workshop on Aboriginal culture and heritage as part of our School Development Day. Uncle Jimmy took our staff on a meaningful Walk on Country around Callan Park, sharing stories, knowledge and insights about the land and its significance.

Uncle Jimmy has worked extensively with the Australian Museum and the University of Sydney, dedicating many years to preserving and teaching Aboriginal traditions. His deep connection to Country and rich experience provided a powerful perspective that enriched our staff's understanding and respect for Indigenous culture.

This experience was a valuable opportunity for upskilling our teachers so we can continue to share authentic cultural knowledge with our students. It’s important that, as role models for our students, we all keep learning and growing to help build a brighter, more inclusive future for everyone in Australia.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book.

Exciting Start to Term 3!

Term 3 has started very positively and we are very pleased with how smoothly the students have settled back into their classes. We were also delighted to welcome a number of new students across the school – it’s wonderful to see our community growing.

This week, I sent out our invitation for Education Week celebrations, in Week 3, which will include our much-loved assembly, open classrooms and something special for parents – a Taikoz drumming workshop.

We’ll also be celebrating NAIDOC Week next week with hands-on art workshops led by Aboriginal artist Taleena Simon from the Boomalli Gallery in Leichhardt. Later in the term, we have the always-colourful Book Week parade, Year 4 camp at Stanwell Tops, and some big moments for our choirs, recorder and string ensembles as they perform at the Sydney Opera House and Town Hall.

And of course, the countdown is on for the FETE!

These events are not just fun – they build pride, confidence and connection for our students. I’m looking forward to sharing an exciting Term 3 with you all.

Regards,

John Nguyen

Reminder to Join our 'BayRun'25 Primary School Challenge' Team (SUNDAY 3/8)

This year, we have once again organised a Drummoyne PS Team for the 2km Primary School Challenge as part of the BayRun on SUNDAY 3rd AUGUST 2025 from 8am.

The BayRun brings together families, school kids and elite runners for a run around the stunning Iron Cove Bay. There is something for everyone - students and their families can run or walk in the 2km primary school event, or parents and older siblings can take on the full 7km course.

If you are interested, please visit the BayRun website for further information and to register your family. You will be able to select our school when you sign up for the 2km Primary School Challenge. Additionally, we have been given a discount code that will provide 20% off in any race category for the first 100 uses. Enter BRF20 at checkout to receive your discount.

Last year, we had a great turnout, including a good number of students, teachers and the Nguyen clan – we’re hoping to have even more families will join us this year! We’ll also be bringing down our Drummoyne PS representative running singlets for the students to wear during the event.

You can also visit the Fundraising Page to make a donation to the Drummoyne PS P&C.

THIS WEEK AT DPS

During Semester 1, 5/6O students engaged in rich and meaningful Genius Hour projects!

Genius Hour projects promote inquiry-based learning and also encourages creativity and personal expression. The variety of presentation formats allowed students to showcase their findings in a way that resonated with their interests and strengths. This may include multi-modal presentations, a book, a script, a movie, cooking, building models and a drama performance.

Through the process, students:

● Identified a topic or problem they were passionate about.

● Formed a deep, open-ended inquiry question to research, answer or solve.

● Used a systematic approach to the formulation of their inquiry question and research.

● Presented or created a final product that communicated their findings and/or solution.

● Reflected on their experience and formed new questions that could be answered in subsequent projects.

Some of the topics for Genius Hour Projects included:

● What are the elements in the periodic table and where do they affect the body?

● How will cryptocurrency affect our future?

● What is a dream?

● What is G-Force and how does it affect the human body?

● How does Kinetics work?

● What impact have teddy bears had on society?

● How did doctors treat pandemic and endemic diseases in the past?

● What are emotions and how do they work?

● What are the main reasons for the differences in opportunities for women in Australian Rules Football, and what can be done to make it fairer for them?

● How can architectural design make an impact on the strength of a bridge?

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)

Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).

Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:

  • year of schooling
  • category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
  • level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.

This information assists schools to:

  • formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools
  • consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
  • develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.

The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability.

The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. To find out more about these matters, please refer to the Australian Government’s Privacy Policy (https://www.education.gov.au/privacy-policy).Further information about the NCCD can be found on the NCCD Portal (https://www.nccd.edu.au).

If you have any questions about the NCCD, please contact the school.

OFFICE NEWS

Student Safety Reminder – Use the Kerbside Door

We’ve noticed an increasing number of students exiting vehicles from the road-side door during drop-off and pick-up. This is a serious safety risk, and we want to avoid any accidents.

Please help us keep all students safe by ensuring your child always enters and exits the car from the kerbside door. A few extra seconds of care can make all the difference.

Thanks for your support in keeping our school community safe!

Lost Property

With the recent cold weather changes students are taking their jackets on and off throughout the day and many are ending up, unclaimed, in lost property!

Office staff have been endeavoring to return items to students where the owner's name is clearly marked but many items have no name or the name of a student who has left the school.

Please clearly mark your child's hats, jackets, lunchboxes etc and encourage them to be responsible for their belongings.

Thank you

Enrol Younger Siblings for 2026 Now!

Important information if your child travels to school by bus

Tapping on and off provides better data to plan better bus services.

How can you help? Please remind your child to tap on and off and ensure your child has a valid Opal card (either a School or Child/Youth Opal card) and remind them to tap on and tap off on every trip.

To apply for a school Opal card, visit https://transportnsw.info/school-travel-apply.  Students may see onboard bus posters and Busways Community Relation Officers at afternoon loadings.  Together let’s get students into good habits of tapping on and tapping off with their Opal card.
