Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Written Expression Exam and National Exam Preparation and Remedial

This week our Grade 10 students sat their Written Expression Exam. Thank you to Ms Yip for preparing the students so well. By all accounts students were very happy with their performance.

This term we are continuing our after school remedial lessons for selected students from grades 8 and 10 on Monday and Tuesday afternoons. We are also continuing our Saturday morning National Exam Program for all Gr 8 and 10 students from 8:30 – 10:30am. Next week students and families will receive the holidays program which will take place during the first week of holidays for Grade 8 and during the first 2 weeks of holidays for Grade 10. Please note students must be on time and attendance is compulsory.

Newmont Board of Directors and ELT Visit

Next Wednesday 10 June, we will be welcoming the Newmont Board of Directors and Executive Leadership Team for a visit to Lihir International School. There will be 2 groups of visitors coming to explore our wonderful school. Our guests will be formally welcomed by our High School students and will then have an opportunity to explore the exciting learning and extracurricular opportunities our students receive at Lihir International School.

School Production

School Production rehearsals are progressing well and students are very excited about the opportunity to perform next Wednesday 10 June, from 6:00pm in the basketball court. We expect to be finished by 7.30pm. All families and community are more than welcome to come and share this exciting evening.

School will finish at 12.00pm to enable students to go home and have a rest. Primary students are to return to school at 5.00pm wearing their navy shorts, shoes and socks and a shirt of their choice. Students will change into their costume shirt at school.

High school students will go home at 12.00pm and return at 1.30pm in their formal uniform, for the assembly presentations for our special visitors. Students from outside of townsite who are unable to go home need to advise their teachers that they will be staying at school and will need to bring their formal uniform with them to school. High school students will be provided with afternoon tea.

Please note parking will be at the club and Aginas Oval as the school car park is reserved for Newmont vehicles at night. Townsite families are encouraged to walk.

Athletics Carnival

The Athletics Carnival will be held on Thursday 11 June. Field events will be held on Thursday morning (for years 1 - 10) from 8:30am – 12:00pm. Students will then be able to go home for a rest before returning to Aginas Oval by no later than 3:45pm for our twilight track events to commence from 4pm. This will be followed by a sausage sizzle for the students. All parents, friends and wantoks are encouraged to attend and support their child/children's house. Again, townsite families are encouraged to walk as parking will be limited.

If any parents can assist with the field events in the morning from 8:30am – 12:00pm please let myself or Miss Judith know; any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Mr Kevin Collins

Kindy Athletics will be held next Friday, 12th June, commencing at 9.00am. Our primary classes will cheer on the Kindy students as they participate in their events. Parents and Carers are welcome! Thank you Mrs Collins and Ms Andar for preparing our Kindy students.

TRP – The Resilience Project

Supporting student wellbeing at home and school, our Monthly Self-Care Plan (see earlier in this Toksave) encourages families to help children develop simple, positive habits. Parents and carers are invited to discuss one or two focus areas with their child—such as gratitude, kindness, mindfulness, connection, or healthy device use—and encourage small, achievable actions throughout the month.

Tips for getting involved: model positive habits, set aside time for family check-ins, practise activities together (e.g. walks, gratitude sharing), and celebrate your child’s efforts along the way.

Ball Raffle Tickets

A kind reminder to please return your tickets and money to the office once raffle tickets have been sold. There is a prize for two students (one girl and one boy) who sell the most tickets! Thank you to our P&W and our community for your wonderful support of our school. There are lots of great prizes to be won - please see the P&W notice in this toksave!

Parent Reading Support / Online Reading - Reading Eggs

Every child reading every day is something we strongly believe in at LIS. Reading sets students up for future success. We ask that parents in the lower primary classes find time to listen to your child read every day and that parents of older students monitor that your child is reading.

Primary students have access and logons for the online reading program - Reading Eggs. Students can complete reading activities on Reading Eggs when at home if they have access to Internet and a device. Please contact your child's teacher if you need logon details.

If any parents would like to assist with listening to primary students read, please contact your child’s teacher. Thankyou to our parents who are already helping with reading.

Kind regards,

Ms Langusch.

Term 2 Week 6 Principal's 'We come to learn' Award Winners

VIP Champion - Thollie-Joy Baiwan

From the Deputy Principal (STM)

Work Ready Program

This week trainees were introduced to the topic Professional Documents.  Topics in Professional Documents include: Curriculum Vitae (CV), Job Application Letter writing and Interview skills.

Guest Speaker

We were privileged to host Mr Solomon Taune – Lead HR People Business Partners and Mr Victor Narubo, Officer People Services HR. Mr Taune emphasised on making choices in life. He explained further by drawing 2 circles, inner as circle of control and outer as circle of concern. He explained that most of the time, many people worry about matters of concern that they have no control over and they miss out on opportunities. The main message was to focus on things that they have control over to succeed in life. Mr Narubo was a former WRP Trainee and he spoke about how he is practising what he learned during his training at his workplace and making a difference. He encouraged the trainees that if he can do it, they can too.  We extend our gratitude to Mr Solomon Taune and Mr Victor Narubo for taking the time off from their busy schedule to come and speak to our current trainees. They really enjoyed your presentations as indicated in their reflections.

FODE

Students are working at their own pace with the guidance of STM staff. STM staff are also preparing Gr. 10 and 12 students who are eligible to sit for their exams this year with mock exams and remedial classes according to the yearly calendar.

Exam Prep and Remedial classes will continue this term at STM.

Kind regards,

Mr David Wengip
