Letter from the Principal, Kelli Johnston

Dear Families

We hope that all families enjoyed the extended weekend over the Melbourne Cup weekend.  The Melbourne Cup weekend is always a great opportunity for families to take a break prior to moving into the final weeks of the school year. The remaining weeks of the school year are filled with many exciting events as we work towards the end of a productive year of learning and commence preparations for a new school year.

We look forward to the following events:

  • Remembrance Day Prayer Service

  • Prep 2025 Transition sessions

  • SJB Carols Evening

  • Year 6 Fun Day

  • Year 6 Graduation

  • End of Year Thanksgiving Mass

  • 2025 Move Up sessions

  • 2024 Semester 2 Reports shared with families

  • SJB Last Day of School Year community gathering on school oval

Remembrance Day - Monday 11th November

Remembrance Day is one of the most important days on our commemorative calendar. It's a day when we acknowledge those who died or suffered while serving in wars, conflicts and peace operations. Remembrance Day is held on 11 November each year. This is the anniversary of the Armistice of 1918 that ended fighting in World War I. The war didn't officially end until 28 June 1919 with the Treaty of Versailles. People in Australia and many other countries observe one minute's silence at the 11 th hour of the 11 th day of the 11 th month because that's when the Armistice came into effect. It's a time to honour our service personnel who died or suffered in service of Australia. (Department of Veteran Affairs)

We warmly welcome our community to join us as we come together in prayer at 10:45am to remember all those impacted by war.

SCHOOL CLOSED ...

Monday 18th November - School Closure Day

Year 6 Leaders - 2025

Last week I enjoyed meeting with our Year 5 students to discuss leadership.  Together the students and I explored what it means to be a leader, the qualities of leaders and their actions. The students reflected upon what they wanted to see and not see from their SJB leaders. The students additionally had an opportunity to ask questions about leadership.  It was wonderful to experience a variety of very well considered and insightful questions from our students -our future leaders. I am very much looking forward to hearing the students’ speeches and their insights into leadership for 2025.

Best wishes to all students as they prepare their speeches in the weeks ahead.

About Real Life 3-6 Sexuality Education

On Thursday 31st October our Year 3-6 families attended an online parent information session led by Sue Pain from About Real Life.  Sue presents families with an informative session in a safe and secure environment on the topic of sexuality education. We thank families who took time to provide feedback on the session from About Real Life. It was wonderful to receive overwhelming positive feedback from our community.

Over the coming two - three weeks our students will participate in their sessions with Sue.  These sessions are designed in alignment with the Victorian Curriculum and are opt in sessions via Operoo. We strongly encourage families to discuss the sessions with their children.

Working Bee - Rescheduled to the 16th November due to building program requirements

We have been most fortunate to have had great support from the SJB school community at this year’s Working Bees. We have one more Working Bee for the year.  The Term 4 Working Bee will be held on Saturday 16th November between 1:30 - 4:00pm.

Families are welcome to contact Ursula De Corrado in regard to the Working Bee or jobs to be completed. Ursula may be contacted through her email: udecorrado@sjferntreegully.catholic.edu.au

Dads and Kids Gilwell Park Weekend Away

Exciting times ahead as the annual SJB Dads and Kids Gilwell Park camping awaits this weekend. It is terrific to see that once again there are strong numbers attending the annual event.  We wish all Dads and kids a great weekend away. We thank Nelson Serrao, Lionel Croning and Chris Lumsden for their teamwork and organisation of this wonderful event.

We ask families to stay tuned as there has been a high level of interest for a family camping weekend. We are tentatively planning to launch this for March 2025. This weekend will include the opportunity to stay in caravans, cabins or camp. The focus being on access for all SJB families.

Year 6 - End of Year Key Graduation Event Timetable

Sacramental Program 2025 - Reconciliation candidates

As a school we are commencing preparations for the 2025 Sacramental program. Due to increased enrolments Sacraments will begin to occur on an annual basis. In 2025 students in Year 3 will prepare for the Sacrament of Reconciliation and students in Years 4 will prepare for the Sacrament of Eucharist.

In the event where students are not yet Baptised and families would like their child to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation, families are asked to make contact with the Parish prior to the end of this year to discuss their child’s Baptism.

2025 School Fees and Levies

School levies and fees for the 2025 school year have now been finalised in consultation with the School Advisory Council

Levies for School Camp and Swimming Levies will be dependent on the costs of the swimming pool charges and camp provider charges.  We would hope that there would be minimal increases with these levies.

Stationery Orders - Book Lists 2025

Families are asked to please be aware that book lists for year levels  Prep to Year 6 have now been included in each year’s fees and levies.  Ordering student stationery items through the school in bulk allows us to keep student stationery orders to a minimum and therefore pass this onto our school community.

As we progress further into implementation of the MACS Vision for Instruction stationery orders will be inclusive of resources that will support implementation of the Vision for Instruction.

Students Departures/Future Numbers

If your child/ren (Prep- Year 5) will not be returning to St John’s in 2024 we ask that you please notify us.

As we plan ahead for 2024 classes, we ask any families who know that they will not be returning to St. John's in 2024 to inform the school as soon as possible by emailing principal@sjferntreegully.catholic.edu.au

Christmas Carols Night - Save the date!!

The SJB Christmas Carols evening will be held on Thursday 5th December. We look forward to a great evening and seeing our students shine.

Once again our terrific Parents and Friends team will prepare a sausage sizzle prior to the Carols.  Further details will follow over the next few weeks.
