Crafers Primary School

Newsletter 16 May 2025

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

I can not believe that we are in Week 3 already. Time certainly does fly when you are made to feel welcome and you are having fun doing so. It has been a lovely start to the term with several school community events taking centre stage including a wonderful school Assembly hosted by our Room 6 students and a performance from our school band members.

Our Parents and Friends committee have been extremely busy, running our Election Day BBQ and Cake stall, hosting our Mothers’ Day Breakfast and Walk Safely to School events. Meanwhile another group of parents have been madly supporting this year’s Pedal Prix team, training and practising in readiness for this weekend’s race at Tailem Bend.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our hard-working volunteers for generously donating their time and expertise in providing wonderful experiences for our school community to enjoy. The pictures of each event tell a thousand stories and once again showcase our community spirit and love for the special people in our lives.

It’s been a joy getting around to each classroom and seeing firsthand how our students have been quick to settle and begin their learning journeys in a safe and supportive manner under the guidance of our wonderfully talented and dedicated staff. They have impressed me by the way they interact with each other, make new people feel included and welcome through their genuine sense of warmth, compassion and care towards one another.

During the first weeks of Term 2, our staff have had the opportunity to reflect upon and discuss their personal and collective professional journeys during staff meetings in relation to school improvement, consistency in practice, and strategic ways to bring our school values to life.

Professional development sessions have been mapped out across the term with an intentional focus on connecting our teaching practice to each goal in our Site Learning Plan.

The School Value we are initially focusing on is ‘Respect’. Our plan here, is for our teachers and students to work collaboratively on unpacking ‘Respect’ in order to create a deeper, shared understanding. We will consider the ways in which this value is embedded in our approach to learning and in our interactions with each other, in classrooms and the wider school community.

Finally, many thanks to our families who represented the school at the recent Stirling ANZAC Day service and to our Student Leaders for their extended efforts in assisting with the Mother’s Day Breakfast. Congratulations and well done to Ms Shephard, Mr Nielsen and members of our School Choir who have worked hard to receive a B+ grading as part of their external assessment.

We are all proud of what is achieved in this wonderful school community.

Kind regards

Shaun Barber

Anzac Day Dawn Service

On the cool dawn of Friday, April 25, a small group of students, families, and staff gathered on the lawns of Stirling Library to participate in the Anzac Day Dawn service. The students truly represented our school well, receiving compliments from various members of the community.

A special thanks goes to Heidi Jagger from the Yellow Flower Cart in Piccadilly for her generous donation of flowers on our behalf.

A Memorable Mother's Day Event in 2025

Our Mother's Day event in 2025 was truly unforgettable.

Imagine a crisp autumn morning filled with warm, buttery pancakes, fresh hot coffee, children's laughter, and a delightful choir singing.

Congratulations to our amazing P&F team for organizing yet another wonderful event! Our student leaders demonstrated remarkable leadership qualities as they welcomed mothers, grandmothers, and special guests to our school.

A special thanks to the dedicated pancake team working on the barbecues; we couldn't have done it without you!

We are grateful to all our special guests who joined us for this occasion.

2025 Mountain Bike Team Championships

On Friday, May 9, four adventurous boys faced off against 50 other schools in the 2025 Mountain Bike Team Championships. The event took place at Sturt Gorge Recreational Park in Craigburn Farm, featuring a loop course that included both challenging downhill and uphill tracks. Sam, Eddie, Finn, and Henry truly shone, completing a remarkable total of 9 laps and securing 27th place out of 98 teams!

Congratulations, boys! We hope you can encourage more teams to participate next year. A heartfelt thank you to the volunteer parents who supported the team on race day, providing assistance with pit stops, bicycle maintenance, and cheering for our riders.

A note from Ebony

My name is Ebony Lehmann and I am the Pastoral Care Worker at Crafers Primary School. I wanted to take the chance to reintroduce myself, as I know we had many new families join our school in late 2024/early 2025.

I have been at Crafers since mid-2021 and have loved being a part of this wonderful community. I returned to Crafers at the start of the year after taking 3 terms off for maternity leave. I have a husband and a 1-year-old daughter at home. I have a Bachelor of Education and a Diploma of Youth Work and employ both of these qualifications in my daily work around the school. I am an avid coffee drinker, Crows fan and Disney lover. I spend my days off playing and reading with my daughter, walking in Belair National Park and drinking coffee.

This year, I will continue to build relationships with students, supporting them when they are having problems at home or school, supporting staff in their role, and running whole class and small group activities as needed. I love a good game of Uno, shooting hoops, playing with kinetic sand, colouring and providing students with a safe and calm environment when they need it.

This year, I am at school Monday, Thursday and Friday.

My email address is ebony.grigg418@schools.sa.edu.au

Please don’t hesitate to reach out if I am able to help your family in any way, or if you just want a chat.

Earth and Space Science in Room 5

Pom Pom creations in Room 7

In Room 7, the children have been exploring techniques to create pom poms using wool and cardboard by going under and through. Once finished, these pom poms will be transformed into sheep. We eagerly anticipate seeing the final creations!

Warm Colours in Room 6

Room 6 students have been learning about warm colours, and drew some roaring lions.

All ongoing volunteers must do mandatory notification training and keep it current. This includes people on a governing council.

The training is called Responding to Risks of Harm, Abuse and Neglect – Education and Care. We call it RRHAN-EC for short.

As a volunteer, you only need to do the RRHAN-EC fundamentals course, which is free for you.

If you've done RRHAN-EC training you should have received a certificate. The expiry date is on that certificate.

If you completed your training between 2021 and 2023, your certificate has expired. We are asking all volunteers to get ahead for 2025 and complete their online training now.

Community Survey

Calling all Adelaide Hills community members! This is your opportunity to provide feedback on how we are going as an organisation and to share what is most important to you!

Every two years we undertake a community perception survey to help us understand what we're doing well, where we could improve, what you love about living in the Hills and your ideas for the future.

We want to hear from people of all ages and backgrounds from right across our community. We have created a special survey for Hills residents aged under 18 to make it easier for young people to get involved.

Those who complete the survey can select to go into the draw to win one of three vouchers to Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary, Cleland Wildelife Park or Gorge Wildlife Park.

Head to https://engage.ahc.sa.gov.au/community-survey-2025 for further information.
