Kaya, Parents & Community Members,

As previously advised, our school participated in a Public School Review on May 9 of this year.  The PSR consisted of a team of external reviewers visiting the school for the day following the school’s submission of a range of evidence against a wide range of criteria.  On the review day, the team spoke to students, a significant number of staff along with representatives from the School Board and P&C.  Subsequently, the report has been forwarded to the school and while a copy is attached to the newsletter and published on the school’s website, the following points (commendation and recommendations) are worth mentioning:

  •   Parents describe Glengarry Primary School as a school of choice, and this is evidenced in high ratings achieved through parent opinion surveys.  Parents find staff to be approachable and committed and school leaders to be visible
  •   National Quality Standard self-assessments (undertaken by early childhood staff), completed each year, have enabled the provision of a consistently high quality environment.
  •  Exemplified by the construction of scope and sequence documents, a highly consultative approach is taken to implementing change.  Student data and staff momentum are the key drivers supporting change.
  • The Board participates as advocates for the wider community in debating the school’s strategic direction.  A shared approach to challenging dialogue ensures robust exploration of what is best for students.
  • Recommendation: continue to explore the incorporation of early childhood student achievement data in the school’s database to assist with gap analysis for Early Childhood Education teachers.
  •  Recommendation: promote internal and external opportunities for staff to moderate their judgements on student performance to track consistent progress and sustained improvement.

The full report will be discussed with the School Board at the next meeting and appropriate actions undertaken to address recommendations.  Following the review, our school is now scheduled for a subsequent review in 2026.

Around Glengarry

MInecraft Club

Our Minecraft students have been busy putting their imaginations to work, creating and restoring new and old worlds. It's truly inspiring to witness their enthusiasm and innovative thinking as they embark on various challenges.

Standalone Homes: Unleashing Creativity!

One of the recent challenges our students undertook was the creation of standalone homes. Guided by their limitless imagination, they demonstrated incredible ingenuity in utilizing building materials to craft unique and personalized dwellings. Each student had the opportunity to showcase their creativity, resulting in a diverse range of architectural marvels within the virtual realm.

Restoring Mangrove Rainforests: Combating Climate Change!

In line with our commitment to environmental education, our Minecraft students have been actively engaged in a special challenge over the term. Their task is to restore a virtual mangrove rainforest while simultaneously lowering CO2 levels, an essential step towards combating climate change. By immersing themselves in this project, our students are gaining a deeper understanding of the importance of environmental conservation and the positive impact they can make through their virtual endeavours.

Wonderful World of Works

  • Bonjour! Over the past weeks, students have read the story 'Petit Poisson Blanc' by Guido van Genechten. Reading is a great way for children to learn a foreign language; they learn new vocabulary while enjoying the story. The story is authentic and children will pick up French culture by the different expressions in the book. Another advantage of reading a book in the foreign language is that students notice the difference with English, which benefits literacy learning in their 'normal' classroom.

  • Leila, Meah and Grace from Room 6 shared the outstanding results they achieved on their recent time assessments. Miss Cole was very impressed with their persistence and progress. Well done, girls!

Celebrating NAIDOC with Aboriginal Print Shirts

As you may have noticed, our staff members have been wearing Aboriginal print shirts this year. This choice of attire signifies our deep respect and admiration for Aboriginal culture as we embrace upcoming NAIDOC celebrations.

One shirt staff members have been wearing is a design by Gundjitmara artist, Merindah-Gunya, called Koorrookee ‘Grandmother’. The below is an explanation from Merindah-Gunya about her piece:

“This piece represents my beautiful grandmother Maude, the large woman symbol in the middle of the painting. In the top right corner is a star representing her mother Amy (my great Nanna) who is in Dreamtime.

I come from a strong line of Aboriginal women, and I am so grateful for their strength and pride in our culture throughout tough times.

There are then 5 people in the bottom corner representing my dad and his three brothers and one sister. There are then 16 children, representing 16 grandchildren of my nan’s. The dreamy background is symbolic of starts in the sky, For Our Elders who are in Dreamtime”.

Just a reminder that PJ Day is on Wednesday June 21.

Health and Hygiene

Is your child feeling unwell?

Hi all,

As COVID and Influenza infections are rising in the community, and with winter upon us many viruses will be very active please be vigilant and encourage hand washing after blowing noses, before handling food.

If your child is unwell with cold and flu symptoms, please keep them at home and consider checking in with your GP if symptoms don't resolve

Healthy WA also recommends seeking a COVID test for cold and flu symptoms.  See links below for more info.

Department of Health LINK

DoE LINK

As directed by our guidelines, we will ask for your child to be collected if they are displaying cold symptoms such as a cough, runny nose, fever etc.

We have a student at school who is immunocompromised.  This means they can potentially become gravely ill even when contracting a common cold/virus.  Please be mindful of sending students to school when they are unwell, as they may spread their infection.  Please speak with your GP/health professional and see the information in the links above re: advice about keeping your child at home when unwell.

P&C News

Running Club

Running Club started back up this term and we have around 50 children who have been attending regularly.

We have lots of smiling faces walking and running around the oval, starting their week in such a positive way, on a Monday morning.

We have a team of parents who keep count of each child’s laps and who give lots of words of encouragement to the children!

The kids are getting some bonus training for the up-coming cross country and it is a very relaxed fitness session with no pressure on the kids to perform or to push themselves.

We have milestone coloured wrist bands which are earned as they clock up the kilometres. These will be handed out soon during assembly.

If anyone new would like to join in, you can fill out a form for your child in the office or at the running sessions on a Monday morning. We start with a warm-up promptly at 7.45, though anyone who is late is still welcome to join in when they arrive.

Many thanks

Tamlyn
