St Mary's Newsletter

Term 3 - Week 8 (8th September, 2023)

Dear St Mary's School Community,

Thank you to you all for the patience and understanding you demonstrated with us, as we negotiated our way through the day during yesterday’s incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected in our local area.

Focus Value: : Sportsmanship

We play fairly for the enjoyment of all and encourage each other to do our best.

Holy Communion

On Sunday we extend our congratulations to those who will be making the Sacrament of The Eucharist in the Church at 10.30am. All are welcome to attend.

Faction Athletics Carnival

A special thank you is sent out to Mrs Crees and her happy band of helpers who facilitated a great Carnival last Friday. Thank you also to all who volunteered to set up, judge, carry, pin, cook and pack up, we couldn’t have had such a successful day without your help.

Father's Day

It was wonderful to see so many Dad’s/Grandad’s/Uncle’s at our Sausage sizzle celebrating Father’s Day. A special mention is made to the St Mary’s staff who arrived early to school to feed the hungry hordes: Thank you!!

Playground Jobs

There are still a few jobs available that need doing. If you are handy with a paint brush; we’d LOVE to see you!!

Seniors Visit

On Thursday, Mrs Munns led the Yr 4/5 class in an interactive musical adventure at the Merredin Seniors Centre. It was a valuable experience for both the children and the seniors who attended.

Learning Journey

Don’t forget to come along to your child’s classroom Tuesday afternoon 3.20-5.30pm and experience some of the activities your children engage in on a daily basis. They’ll be looking forward to showing you some of the skills they’ve learnt over the past year.

Busy Week

We have a busy week ahead with a music incursion on Monday, a tennis clinic Wednesday, and our St Mary’s Day celebration on Thursday, where we’ll have Mass at 9am followed by a colouring competition, featuring BIG prizes, followed by a sausage sizzle for the children at lunch.

Parents are also welcome to come and grab a cuppa and have a catch-up in the staffroom after Mass as well. Mr Hamersley will be baking a big chocolate cake…no, that’s a fib!! But he will organise some morning tea to go with the cuppa’s!

Interschool Carnival Friday 15th September

Our Interschool Carnival will be held on Friday 15th September at the Merredin College. Best of luck to all competitors!!

Colour Run

Don’t forget our P&F’s big Colour Run, Friday the 22nd of September. It’s a great fundraising event which will be a lot of fun and benefit the children at St Mary’s.

God Bless.

Mr H.

Let Us Pray

Lord God,

you are attentive to the voice of our pleading.

Let us find in your Son

comfort on a daily basis,

certainty in our doubt,

and courage to live through this hour.

Make our faith strong through Christ our Lord.

Amen

Class News

Performing Arts

This Term in Performing Arts we have been focusing on Music and our upcoming visit from Musica Viva. We have also enjoyed learning some new folk dances which, apart from being lots of fun, is teaching us about beat and rhythm.

The visiting Musica Viva group this year are called Lost Histories.

We started off by learning their song called “Makes me smile” which is a song about memories that make us smile. We brought in objects from home that give us a memory that makes us smile. Some in the older grades had a go at writing their own lyrics to match their objects.

Their second song is called the Captain’s lady which is about a female bushranger from long ago that was very intelligent but never recognised, unlike her husband. The children have enjoyed creating dances to match the lyrics and rhythms of this song and performing them.

Next week we are looking forward to meeting the Musica Viva musicians and singing their songs with them!

A special mention to Daina Sutherland and Mel Davis who were incredible in helping deal with all of the IT issues on the day. Thankyou also to the St Mary’s P & F for catering.

We wish all of our students competing at the Interschool Carnival at Merredin College on the 15th September all the best.

Variety WA- The Children's Charity - Bash 2023

The Variety WA Bash is a “carnival on wheels” that raises funds to empower kids of WA who are sick, experiencing disadvantage or living with disability. With about fifty bash cars and a team of thirteen support vehicles made up of medics, logistics, media and workshop the event is an 8-day motoring event that brings some noise and colour to regional WA.

This year we are kicking things off from Merredin, with a public start line event at the northern carpark off Barrack Street. We’ll have a huge inflatable archway, music, and the bash cars and entrants all dressed up ready to go.

We would love for the community to be involved by coming down to see the cars and wave them off as they kick off the Variety WA Bash 23.

 Basic details for the morning:

8:00am Carpark open to the public.

9:00am Cars depart (staggered, like a rally start).

10:00am All cars departed.

Eric Hind Scholarship

Eric Hind was born in Nottingham in England in 1901. He migrated to Western Australia in 1926 and came immediately to the Wheatbelt. In 1928 he took up farming land at Burracoppin and so commenced a lifetime of interest in the Burracoppin Area.

During the Second World War Eric enlisted in the R.A.A.F and served overseas.

In 1953 he was elected to the then Merredin Road Board and continued to represent the people of Burracoppin on the Merredin Shire Council until his retirement in 1989.

After 36 years of service on the Road Board and Shire Council, the Merredin Shire Council presented Eric with a long service award and made him a Freeman of the Shire. In 1990 he received the Order of Australia Medal for services to the community.

Eric Hind was an accomplished violinist who had gained his A.L.C.M (Eng) diploma before leaving England. As an active member of the Merredin Musical Society and Concert Orchestra of the day, Eric was much sought after as a violinist and was willing to perform at any function if possible. Eric also served on the local W.A Symphony Orchestra Committee and was instrumental in getting many concerts in Merredin over a number of years.

In his honor, the Shire of Merredin offers a yearly music scholarship to the value of $1000.00.
