Drummoyne Public School

Term 2 Week 10 Newsletter - Friday 5 July 2024

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

End-of-Term 2 Reflections

As we wrap up Term 2, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks for your ongoing engagement with, and support of, our school. Your active partnership and advocacy for your children  have been instrumental in making this term a successful and rewarding one for our students.

This term has been filled with many wonderful events and activities that have enriched our students' learning and development. Our Stage 3 students had an unforgettable experience at camp, where they built resilience and independence whilst learning about Parliament and the gold rush; the Peer Support Program saw older students mentor and guide their younger peers, fostering a sense of community and leadership across year levels; our farm excursions provided hands-on learning experiences that brought classroom lessons to life, allowing students to connect with nature and the past; and the cross country and athletics carnivals were highlights of the term, showcasing our students' dedication, sportsmanship, and school spirit. It was wonderful to see so many parents cheering on our athletes and adding to the vibrant community atmosphere of these events.

Additionally, we navigated the announcement of several changes to school staffing and programs for Semester 2. These adjustments, whilst not ideal, will mean the school will be in a position to provide the best possible learning environment for your children and  maintain the high standards of education and support for our students that our school is known for. Your ongoing understanding and cooperation during this transition period is greatly appreciated.

Parent-Teacher Interviews

The parent-teacher interviews conducted over the last week have been incredibly well received. It was wonderful to see so many of you taking the time to connect with our teachers and discuss your child/ren's progress. These conversations are crucial in fostering a strong home-school partnership and are also a very tangible reflection of the professionalism, knowledge and care of our teachers who gave of their time to provide this opportunity for our families.

NAIDOC Week

As we enter the school holidays, I encourage all families to engage with the NAIDOC Week celebrations happening around Sydney next week. There are many wonderful opportunities to learn about and celebrate the rich cultural heritage and history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples alongside your children.

Term 3

Looking ahead to Term 3, I am excited about the special events we have planned, including Education Week open classrooms, a whole-school ‘Art Trail’, the creation of two new Indigenous murals and, of course, our school fete. These events will offer fantastic opportunities for our school community to come together and celebrate our students' talents and achievements.

I look forward to welcoming you and our students back to school on Tuesday 23rd July.

Regards,

John Nguyen

Extended Leave Travel Applications

If your family is planning an extended holiday from school, please consider taking holidays during official school breaks. If this is not possible please fill in an 'application for extended leave - travel' form if you are planning to take your child out of school for 10 or more school days. (form attached below or available on our website)

Student Work During Extended Leave

From time to time, requests are made to class teachers to provide classwork for students when they are taking an extended holiday during term.  While teachers are wanting to support students to continue their learning when away from school, providing worksheets and the like for children to complete has limited value for learning and generally will not be provided.

Completion of worksheets is helpful for students when it is based on the teaching and learning in class including the questions, interactions and feedback between the teacher and the students.

Our best suggestion for children who are going on extended leave is to keep a diary, written or drawn, and then share this with their class when they return to school.

PBL AWARDS

Principal's Awards and Principal's Badges

Students receive values certificates from their teachers throughout the year for demonstrating our values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience.

Once a student receives 5 values certificates, they are able to trade them in at the school office for a Principal's Award.  The 5 values certificates can be a combination of the 3 school values and come from any year the student has been at DPS.

Once the student has received 3 Principal's Awards, they can bring them to the school office and choose their Principal's Badge from one of the 3 values.

Principal's Award's

Respect awards - Rawson says congratulations to:

  • Bart W - 1/2D
  • Lucie M - 1/2P
  • Ashun C - 5/6C

Responsibility awards - Monty says congratulations to:

  • Olivia G - 1/2M

Principal's Badges

Mr Nguyen says congratulations to:

  • Lucie M - 1/2P - Responsibility Badge
  • Ashun C - 5/6C - Responsibility Badge

Positive Behaviours for Learning (PBL) tokens

Tokens are handed out to students who demonstrate our school values of Respect, Responsibility, and Resilience. Students post the tokens in the collection tubes divided by house teams. The tokens are counted at the end of each week, and the ongoing totals are displayed on our school notice board outside the office.

Congratulations to Guwing - The house with the most tokens at the end of term 2. Guwing students celebrated today with a yellow mufti day.

THIS WEEK AT DPS

Peer Support Final Session

Week 8

In this week’s final session of the Peer Support module, 'Keeping Friends', children played a game, reinforcing all of the concepts and skills learned over the past 7 weeks. They were reminded of the qualities of a good friend and the skills needed to maintain friendships and make new friends.

Each Peer Support group had the opportunity to celebrate what they have learned and the new friendships and connections they have made.

Stage 3 Overnight Excursions

Last week our Year 5 students had an exciting time on their 3-day excursion to Bathurst and beyond. Students were a great credit to their families and school as they enthusiastically participated in rich learning experiences that supported their history unit this semester. Students visited Hartley for a fascinating tour and  Hill End for a village tour before going gold panning and then on an underground mine tour.

The following day was a museum experience, students learned to pitch tents, enjoyed team sports, went gold panning again and made damper. The active participation of every student throughout the planned activities was a delight.

Students can be proud of the way they cared for each other. Throughout the excursion, they were complimented for their respectful behaviour and willingness to share their learning with the educators.

Thank you to Amanda Champion, Jacqui Hill, and Deb Knight for giving up their own family time to provide such a rich learning experience for Year 5 students.

Bathurst Excursion

Canberra Excursion

Our Year 6 students also had wonderful learning opportunities last week on their 3-day excursion to Canberra. Students engaged in role plays at Parliament House, learned the voting process at the Electoral Education Centre, visited the Museum of Democracy, and valued the opportunity to engage in the 'We Will Remember Them' Program at The Australian War Memorial. Interactive activities were also enjoyed at the CSIRO Discovery Centre and the National Arboretum.
These quality educational sessions were the culmination of study for Year 6 this semester. Thank you to Dianne Colb, Orla Page, Leah Pegler, and Elyse Mooney for their supervision, care and sacrificially leaving behind their families to support this wonderful learning opportunity.
While each of our students benefited from the rich learning, it was obvious the benefits for them were significant. Teachers observed new relationships being made and existing ones deepening. Our school values of respect and responsibility were seen day and night. Resilience was noticed when students used their initiative to seek support, face their uncertainties, and with teacher guidance, demonstrate the perseverance required. Overnight excursions provide the opportunity to reflect on their developing maturity and celebrate their many successes.
Thank you parents and carers for your support and partnering with us in the preparation for and during the excursion. Wonderful memories were created for our senior students.

Parliament and Civics Education Rebate

Our Year 6 students at Drummoyne PS have recently undertaken an educational tour of the national capital. As part of their study, students participated in many educational programs with a focus on Australia's history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) program is an Australian Government initiative that provides financial assistance to support students’ on-site learning about national democratic, historical and cultural institutions in Canberra.

By visiting select locations in Canberra, DPS qualified for the $30 rebate which is allocated on a per student basis. Once approved, the $30 rebate will be paid directly to the school and will be held in trust as a contribution towards the cost of end of year activities for our Year 6 students.

HIGH POTENTIAL & GIFTED

Genius Hour Projects

This semester, 5/6O students have been participating in a Genius Hour project. Each week they have used time in class, as well as at home, to research and investigate a topic of their choice. This week they have begun to present their projects to their peers. Through the process, students have had to:

  • Identify a topic or problem they are passionate about and form a deep, open-ended inquiry question to research, answer or solve.
  • Take a systematic approach to the formulation of their inquiry question and research.
  • Present or create a final product that communicates their findings and/or solution.
  • Complete a reflection on their Genius Hour project - reflect on their experience and form new questions that could be answered in subsequent Genius Hour projects.

Student’s were told Genius Hour presentations could be presented in any way or form such as written, spoken or visual forms, including a multi-modal presentation, a book, a script, a movie or a speech; through cooking, building, or drama performance.

Some of the Genius Hour Projects this semester included:

  • Why do balls curve?
  • What is an injury?
  • How do the left and right sides of the brain work?
  • How has aviation technology developed over time?
  • How did cats influence Ancient Egypt?
  • What influences ancient civilisations to adopt deities from others?
  • What can you create using Minecraft?
  • What is blood and why is it so important?
  • How are cartoons made?
  • How do some animals survive in harsh biomes?
  • What is forensic science?
  • What is vibrato?
  • How does antivenom work?

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

We have our School Spelling Champs!

Who thought a Spelling Bee could be such an exciting event to watch? Students in Stages 2 and 3 were fortunate to witness two of the most tense Spelling competitions in recent memory. All competitors performed exceptionally well, under immense pressure.

Sienna D, 3/4K overcame nerves to out-spell classmate, Ryan E, 3/4K to become our Stage 2 Champion. While Kiera B, 5/6H proved that hard work and determination really do pay off, by moving up 27 places from her 27th place finish last year, to being crowned our Stage 3 Champion.

Kiera B and Sienna D will now represent Drummoyne Public School in the Regional Finals of the 2024 NSW Premier's Spelling Bee. These finals will take place live via Zoom, sometime in the second half of Term 3. Further details will be confirmed early in Term 3.

We wish the girls well for the Regional Finals.
