ZIG ZAG Public School

The term is progressing at a lightning pace, with each day filled with rich learning experiences for our students. In addition to our commitment to the Plan for NSW Public Education, which focuses on explicit teaching practices and improving opportunities in High Potential and Gifted Education, Zig Zag Public School is currently placing a strong focus on strengthening student wellbeing and development.

Many parents may have recently received communication regarding the updating of support plans. We are working diligently to ensure that students with additional learning needs are supported in a holistic manner that values partnerships between families, the school, and external agencies.

We are also currently reviewing and updating our Attendance Procedures. As part of our duty of care and in alignment with Department policies, all student absences are required to be explained. We understand that many families experience a range of challenges, from ongoing illness to school refusal, and we are committed to working alongside families to support students in maintaining positive engagement with school.

Please feel encouraged to contact myself or your child’s classroom teacher to discuss ways in which we can support you and your children.

An outstanding result for our entries in this year's Waste to Art competition with Zig Zag Public School taking out First place! I am also keen to watch our dancers perform in the Western Dance Festival, we have a Game Changer entry coming up as well as PSSA sporting teams who are training hard.

I would also like to thank our P&C for their ongoing support of the school. This dedicated group of parents is organising some wonderful events and is committed to supporting the school in establishing a more inclusive environment for our families through the extension of undercover areas and the possible expansion of our current hall facilities. We would love for parents, families, and friends to be able to attend whole-school events comfortably, regardless of the weather, and I encourage our community to support the valuable work of the P&C.

I have also been working closely with Lithgow Buslines, Transport for NSW, and our Director regarding the ongoing issues surrounding bus arrival times. I will continue to provide updated information to families as it becomes available.

As we move towards the end of the term, we mark half a year of learning and growth. Semester reports will be sent home at the end of Week 10, and I ask families to please save the date of 30 June for our Parent Teacher Interviews. Yes - this term is an 11-week term!

Lastly, enrolments are now open, and we are excited to welcome a large cohort of Kindergarten students in 2027. Please encourage family and friends to contact the school if they are considering enrolment, as we will begin our Transition to School program, “Puffing Billy’s”, in Term 3.

This week, we have been continuing to read Our World, a fascinating non-fiction book that introduces us to different places and cultures. As a class, we have explored the features of non-fiction texts—including headings, subheadings, images, and interesting facts.

After discussing these features, each student chose a place to research and created their own information text. Students carefully included headings, subheadings, facts, and relevant images to showcase what they learned. The class showed great enthusiasm and creativity throughout the process, and we enjoyed presenting our work to each other.

Our Year 4/5 students have been busy in the kitchen, learning valuable cooking skills while working together as a team.

From preparing ingredients to creating delicious meals, the students showed great cooperation, enthusiasm, and confidence.

Best of all, the yummy food was enjoyed by everyone — and there was one extra surprise for parents: “Look Mum, we can do the dishes too!”

It was wonderful to see students taking responsibility, helping one another, and having fun along the way.

3/4 had a fantastic time in cooking.

We had two groups making pumpkin soup and two making flat bread.

All of the students had fun cooking different things and then trying them. Some students even had two serves of soup. 

In 1/2 Waterworks, students have been actively participating in Physical Activity that focus on developing movement skills, teamwork and confidence through games and skill-based activities.

This fortnight in PE, students have been focusing on the skill of vertical jumping. Students watched examples, discussed what makes a successful jump and practised giving feedback to peers to help improve performance.

In Sport, students have been participating in a netball unit where they have been learning and practising skills such as passing, catching, footwork and teamwork. Students have enjoyed applying these skills during modified games while building cooperation, confidence and game awareness.

K/1 have been working hard to apply their phonics skills to write CVC words and simple sentences.

The class was very lucky to enjoy some special Bee Day News with Sophie and her family, who brought in beekeeping equipment to share, along with some delicious honey and honeycomb for the class to taste. It was wonderful to learn about how honey is made and why bees are so important. K/1 would like to say a BIG thank you to Sophie and her family for this rich learning experience.

We have also had some more epic News this week thanks to Indigo, who exceeded our expectations with her fire engine made from recycled materials. What a fantastic effort!

The class have also been engaging in the ‘Responsible Pets’ program, where they are learning how to stay safe around dogs and how to approach them safely for a pat.

World Bee Day is celebrated each year on May 20th to raise awareness about the importance of bees and other pollinators for the health of ecosystems and food production.

Bees play a crucial role in pollinating many of the plants that produce the food we eat, supporting biodiversity and sustainable agriculture.

The day encourages actions to protect bees and their habitats, highlighting their significance in maintaining our environment and ensuring food security for future generations.

All the students enjoyed learning about bees and doing some beautiful art work.
