Term 3 Week 6

Principal and Deputy Principal's Message

You just have to look at our school Facebook page to get an idea of how much we have done in the past two weeks and how proud we are of the accomplishments of our students. From the physical, social/emotional, intellectual and creative domains of talent we have so many students that have excelled in specific areas. Well done to our parents, students and teachers for fostering the talents of our children!

Classroom Visits
This week we visited a few classrooms and we’re extremely proud of the learning that is occurring. Students in 2 Mint were engaged and focused on their writing as a result of clear expectations that were visible to them. They knew the purpose of the lesson and what they needed to do in order to achieve the task criteria. Well done 2 Mint and Ms Harris. 1 Navy took to editing their writing in the beautiful sunshine. Students read aloud to a tree to see if their writing made sense and then made changes to enhance their writing. Students reflecting on their own learning is a powerful life long skill.

We love celebrating students who are working hard on achieving their learning goals. Caitlin from 2 Olive is working hard on achieving her cultural goal from her Personalised learning Pathway. She was as proud as can be when she came to read to us an Aboriginal story. Her expression, pace and intonation showed both of us how hard she has been working with Mrs Styer, Miss McAlpine and Mrs Burton.

Zone Athletics Champions
Congratulations to our Zone Athletics Team, who competed in a range of events last week to come away overall winners of the carnival. Students broke a range of records and displayed exemplary sportsmanship on the day. Thank you to Mrs Bartram for not only attending the carnival but leading the orgnisation for our school and training the relay teams, which resulted in fabulous results. We would also like to acknowledge Mr Scholze and Mrs Thomas for supporting the students on the day. A big thank you also goes to our families for cheering on our students.

Please see further in the newsletter for students results.

Camping Adventures
This week many of our Year 4 students set out for their very first camp and boy did they have a great time. The students attended the Sydney Academy of Sport and Recreation at Narrabeen, and it could not have been a better location and the weather was perfect for the students to have so much fun. The students participated in many activities including, bushwalking, making damper, orienteering, archery, designing and making a billycart, stand up paddle boarding and much more. Many students tried activities they had not done before and showed so much bravery, by pushing through their fears.

Student behaviour was exemplary, and many comments were made by the camp staff in relation to how wonderful our students are. I would like to acknowledge Mrs Finn and Mrs Hankin for their excellent organisation of the camp, and Mrs Finn, Mr Wilson, Mr King, Mrs Bartram and Miss Youssef for attending the camp. This is a big commitment from teachers, being away from their families for two nights and I thank them immensely. Thank you also to our families for their support with providing this opportunity for the children.

Holsworthy High School Challenge Cup
This week four of our fabulous Year 5 students, Ryan, Tayla, Amilia and Josh represented Wattle Grove in the third round of the Holsworthy High School Challenge Cup. This round saw our competitors engaging in an ‘Amazing Race’, where they had to answer a range of questions and take on a series of physical challenges. The students did a wonderful job coming a close second to Holsworthy Public School. Well done team and thank you to Miss Cascio for taking the students over to the high school and supporting their participation.

Paint & Sip P&C Event
Much fun was had at the very first P&C Paint and Sip. 45 parents and friends gathered in the school hall for a fun-filled night of painting, sipping and chatting, and of course watching the Matildas win their quarter final! I am sure the cheers were heard from miles away. Thank you to our amazing P&C for organising such a great night.

This supports our school planning for 2024. We look forward to seeing our 2024 Kinder students at Orientation in Term 4.

Staff Professional Learning
This week Mrs Valensise delivered the second part of our school’s focus on Aboriginal Education. Staff unpacked the Aboriginal Education Policy and discussed the things we are doing are working well and what we need to focus on next. Our staff are doing wonderful work around Aboriginal Education and deepening students understanding of culture and connection to country

Have a wonderful fortnight everyone,

Be safe and well.

Buzzing Around with Miss Cameron

We zoomed into the Kindergarten with Year 9 students from Holsworthy High this week. As part of the official book week, the high school students shared a quality picture book with Kindergarten. It was such a joy to see older students sharing their love of reading with our younger generation. There were definitely some future teachers in the making.

This year's chess competition saw 32 students from Years 1-6 compete in a knockout tournament.  After 5 rounds of competition, the final was held on Tuesday. In front of a small but supportive crowd Jais and Evaan fought it out for the title of school chess champion.  A triumphant checkmate!  Congrats Evaan on clinching the top spot in the chess competition.  His dedication and skill have paid off in the best way possible.  Jais displayed exceptional skill and determination, finishing in second place and is to be commended for his success in this year's competition.

School Holiday Programs Descriptions

Pet Friends

Spend the day with us learning about animals, positive pet care, and the ways RSPCA NSW helps animals at our shelters and in the community. The day includes a guided tour to meet our shelter animals as well as visiting behind-the-scenes to see the inner workings of our shelter. You will also get crafty and make enrichment goodies for your own pet or one of the lucky shelter animals.

This program is a great way to instil a sense of compassion and responsibility in children towards animals while also having a fun and educational experience.

Junior Animal Attendants

Junior Animal Attendants is a unique hands-on program for children aged 8-15 years who want to develop their skills in caring for companion animals or have an interest to work with animals in the future. Participants will learn the daily routine and responsibilities of a RSPCA NSW Animal Attendant and learn how to care for cats, dogs, and pocket pets through a range of interactive activities and behind the scenes encounters.

For more information about the programs and to register, visit https://events.humanitix.com/host/rspca-nsw.
