TOKSAVE - Term 3 Week 3 2023

Lihir International School and School to Mine Campus

Principal: Mr Gregory Neville

Deputy Principal LIS: Ms Catherine Langusch

Deputy Principal STM: Mr Kevin Collins

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

National Exams

Next week, year 10 students will sit their Science Practical exam. Ms Baiwan has prepared the students well and the students are keen to complete the exam.

Swim Coach

We have been privileged to have former PNG Olympian,  Ms Judith Meauri, coach all LIS students over the past week, assisting them with their swim techniques in the lead up to the swimming carnival later in the term. A special thankyou goes to all the parent helpers who have assisted in the pool over the week. We encourage our parents to volunteer and assist where they can with our sports program.

Netball

Thank you to Ms Langusch and Ms Dovaston for their commitment in preparing the LIS netball teams in the lead up to the inter-school netball carnival with OLSH International School Kavieng last week. The girls played hard, with the primary team winning their category and OLSH Kavieng taking out the high school category.

Screen Time

Many parents are concerned about the amount of screen time their children have children have on various devices. Recent studies have outlined several detrimental effects that too much screen time can have on children and adolescents.  The Australian Institute for Family Studies screen time guidelines recommend:

  • no screen time for children younger than two years.
  • no more than one hour per day for children aged 2-5 years.
  • no more than two hours of sedentary recreational screen time per day for children and young people aged 5-17 years (not including schoolwork).

The links below in the Toksave have more information on the guidelines and the effects of too much screen time.

Term 3 Calendar

Please find the Term 3 Parent Calendar attached below.

If you have any concerns or would like further information on any of the topics in this newsletter, please do not hesitate to make contact with any questions.

Regards,

Mr Greg Neville

From the Deputy Principal (STM)

This week we welcomed a new intake of sixteen Work Ready Program trainees. These young Lihirians have made a good start to the program, and we look forward to working with them over the coming weeks as they undertake training to develop skills to seek and retain employment. Please look out for the Work Ready Program Trainee Profiles in the toksave over the coming weeks.

We are continuing preparation for our DWU Lecturers to come to site to deliver the Bachelor of Primary Education Upgrade and the Master of Educational Leadership during the September school holidays.

National exam remedial lessons at STMC are continuing for Grade 8 and 10 students every Saturday this term as per last term’s timetable. These lessons are of great importance as the students prepare for their exams at the start of term 4.

Our FODE students continue to work hard as they prepare for the end of year exams.
