Crafers Primary School

Newsletter 21 February 2025

From the Principal

Dear Crafers Community

Welcome to 2025. We have had a smooth start with classes settled and well into achieving positive learning outcomes.

Site Learning Plan

In this newsletter I would like to share with you the progress being made in realising positive learning gains in relation to our Site Learning Plan.

Within the guidelines of the Department for Education our areas of impact are centred around Equity and Excellence, Wellbeing, Learner Agency and Effective Learners. Our Site Learning Plan (SLP) is a flexible document which is able to change, direct and reflect the progress being made. At the moment there are three goals driving the SLP and already much has been done to achieve positive outcomes.

Goal 1: Extend students’ knowledge and understanding of Indigenous Perspective in all aspects of learning.

So far to this end we have:

  • Attended training with Stephen Warrior learning about Aboriginal Culture.
  • Lesson planning incorporating Aboriginal understandings.
  • Have in progress the Reconciliation Plan.

Goal 2: To improve place value knowledge, understanding and fluency across the school.

So far to this end we have:

  • Purchased appropriate materials.
  • Arranged for teachers to engage in appropriate training.
  • Began a consistent approach to teaching and practising place value.

Goal 3: Developing positive dispositions for learning as part of Wellbeing; e.g., Self-direction, self-motivation, goal setting, courage.

So far to this end we have:

  • Engaged with the District Wellbeing training.
  • Have self-reflection at the end of lessons.
  • Explicitly teach positive learning dispositions, empowering students to understand their own learning strategies.

The current SLP is a document which will allow us to track progress, but also give the flexibility to change as goals are achieved, or if new thinking comes to bear. This is a departure from previous plans which were a little more prescriptive.

Principal Update

Applications have closed and the panel is currently meeting to short list and interview. At the moment there is no date for announcement of our new principal.

Governing Council

Thank you to all who attended the Annual General Meeting. The new Governing Council has now been formed; thanks to Dean Topham who accepted the position of Chairperson. Thanks also to parents who accepted other roles on council and committees. Council members and their roles are listed later in this newsletter.

To the school community, thank you for your continuing support,

John

Room 7 Updates

In InitiaLit Year 1 & 2, students have adapted well to their morning routines. Each Wednesday and Friday, we engage with various components, and we've just completed our first storybooks. We wrapped up this fortnight's stories with a fun craft activity on Friday.

Year 1 students read "Fang Fang's Chinese New Year" by Sally Rippen. To celebrate the year of the 'snake' in Chinese culture, we created snakes using egg cartons and folded paper for their bodies.

Meanwhile, Year 2 students enjoyed "Willy the Wimp" by Anthony Browne. They illustrated Willy's body by designing patterns for his clothing, using a key to remember the patterns. These creations will be showcased at Room 7's Assembly in week 5.

Both year levels have explored accompanying books that feature three words each. Students learn the meanings of these words and become familiar with terminology from various writing genres.

Year 1/2 Teachers,

Pam Shephard and Katie H-S

All ongoing volunteers must do mandatory notification training and keep it current. This includes people on a governing council.

The training is called Responding to Risks of Harm, Abuse and Neglect – Education and Care. We call it RRHAN-EC for short.

As a volunteer, you only need to do the RRHAN-EC fundamentals course, which is free for you.

If you've done RRHAN-EC training you should have received a certificate. The expiry date is on that certificate.

If you completed your training between 2021 and 2023, your certificate has expired. We are asking all volunteers to get ahead for 2025 and complete their online training now.
