Newsletter 6 March 2025

Principal's Report

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome to the Newsletter for Week 6.

As you would be aware, the effects of Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred are being felt in many communities across South East Queensland.

I was so thankful to be able to re-open our school on Monday 10 March for Supervision.

All required safety and risk assessments were conducted and all of our facilities have been returned to normal operations with no damage.

Please be mindful that some of our local roads and access to our school may be affected. If this weather event poses a danger to your child travelling to school, please notify the school of your child’s absence as soon as possible. Absences can be advised via QParents noting ‘severe weather’ as the reason. Absences due to emergencies and natural disasters will not be recorded on a student’s report card.

Information about current weather conditions can be found on the Bureau of Meteorology website at www.bom.gov.au.

It is incredibly important that you take time to look after yourselves and your families. I encourage you to access the information available for parents and students to support health and wellbeing (https://education.qld.gov.au/students/student-health-safety-wellbeing/student-wellbeing) during these difficult circumstances.

SCHOOL REVIEW

Due to the recent weather event, our School Review has been postponed to later in the year. I will let you know more details around the timing of this once I am notified. All of our preparation will place us in a very good position for the review later this year.

NAPLAN

Attached to this Newsletter is a document providing some NAPLAN information for parents/carers of students in Year 3 and 5. The NAPLAN test window starts on Wednesday 12th March and finishes on Monday 24th March, 2025. Further information about our timetable and arrangements at Beerwah SS will has already been distributed. If you have any questions or concerns about NAPLAN, please contact your child’s classroom teacher.

P&C

The P&C Association at Beerwah State School is an essential part of what makes our school community so special. Through their commitment, support, and positive engagement, parents, citizens, and staff come together to create an enriching environment where our students can flourish. We encourage all families to consider getting involved, whether through attending meetings, volunteering, or simply lending a hand when needed. Together, we can continue to build a strong and supportive school community that benefits everyone.

If you’d like to learn more about the P&C or how you can get involved, please contact the school office or attend the next P&C meeting on Monday 17th March at 6:00pm. This meeting will be followed by our AGM Meeting where all positions will be open for nominations.

We look forward to working with you to support our students to be the best that they can be.

Have a wonderful week!

English Units

We are into the swing of things this term and our English learning walls are taking shape. A learning wall is a resource in the classroom which develops across the term as student’s progress through their unit of work.

As a school, our goal is that students use the learning wall themselves to enact feedback that they’re given by teachers. Learning walls are utilised everyday and have of evidence of student work on them. Here are some examples of learning walls from the early years (starting in Prep) and students working on individual curriculum plans.

NAPLAN

NAPLAN testing will commence on Wednesday 12 March 2025. NAPLAN is now run as an online program. Year 3 Writing is not completed on-line but with paper and pencil as per the previous NAPLAN testing programmes.

The NAPLAN test window runs over 2 weeks from 12 March until 24 March. There is a set sequence we must follow and the writing test must be held on the 13 March.

Outlined below is the day each test will be held. The plan may change if we have computer or internet issues on any particular day and need to abort testing on that day. To ensure a sufficient number of devices for each cohort, Year 5 and Year 3 will have two groups. Group 1 will do their tests in the morning session and Group 2 will do their tests in the middle session.

If students are not participating in the tests or their teacher is running one of the test sessions, they will be supervised in another class. The schedule for NAPLAN tests is listed below:

The test sessions will run during normal school morning session, starting at 9:15 until approximately 10:15. Running into a lunch break may occur if we encounter a problem once the testing session has started e.g. the power suddenly goes out or the internet stops working.

Catch up test sessions (for students who are absent and miss their testing day) will be held on Tuesday 18 and Wednesday 19 March. There is only a Year 5 writing catch-up if there is a major connectivity disruption.

NAPLAN Schedule

Incursions and excursions

We have some very exciting incursions and excursions coming up.

We look for incursion/excursion opportunities that value-add to our curriculum delivery in the school. Upcoming ones include:

Term 2, Week 3 – Year 6 camp

Term 2, Week 7 and 8 – Interschool sport (soccer). Year 4-6.

When we have details confirmed for each of the incursions/excursions, they will be released through consent management on QParents.

Parents and other visitors to our school support safety by ensuring their communications and conduct at the school and school activities is respectful. STUDENT MESSAGES AND EARLY COLLECTION

We realise sometimes Parents need to get a message to student/s to change how they are going home, with whom, or need to collect student/s early. We ask Parents, where possible, to please contact the school at their earliest convenience prior to 1:00pm; to advise so messages can go out in rolls and minimise interruptions to class learning time.

Student Services

At Beerwah, the Student Services team meets every second week to discuss how best to support our students’ learning and support needs.  Sometimes students’ needs are identified on enrolment or through our moderation process and other times individual student needs are identified by teachers.

Classroom teachers may discuss student needs with parents and carers and if necessary a referral will be made to the Student Services team.  If this is necessary, a green permission form will be sent home, explaining the process and we encourage you to complete the questionnaire on the rear of the form to help us to understand the needs of your student more clearly.

Our team are currently running an intervention program focussing on supporting students requiring additional support in the areas of phonemic awareness and phonics.

Developing Resilience Part 1

If we don’t allow our children to experience struggles, we don’t equip them to deal with difficulty.

Without facing anything taxing, children will never acquire confidence in their skills to overcome occasional hard times. Over the next few weeks, I will discuss skills to help your child build their resilience in the only way possible – how to overcome challenges they face in their day-to-day life i.e. a normal day.

What makes a normal day?

·       While we all have good days, most of our days are combinations of successes and failures; a few days are not good at all and some days are downright horrible.

·       Of the people we meet through the day, many will like us, some will really like us, and some won’t like us at all.

·       We will sometimes try our best at tasks and sometimes not, yet the outcome of our efforts will be relatively unpredictable: sometimes we will win without trying; sometimes we will put in enormous effort and not achieve success.

·       No matter which rules and regulations are in place, sometimes things won’t be fair and some things just won’t work in our favour.

·       We will see others get away with things we haven’t been able to get away with, but occasionally we will get a lucky break that is denied to someone else.

·       We will sometimes drop our ice cream on the ground, occasionally smash our favourite vase, and get a heavy cold on our holidays.

·       There is no one to blame – this is just life and we will always win some and lose some.

P&C Meetings

Our next meeting will be on Monday 17th March (week 8) at 6pm followed by our AGM at 6.30pm.

At the AGM, all positions become vacant so if you’ve ever thought about being on the executive team, this is the meeting to attend.

New parents, carers or community members often come to our meetings, just to see how they run and listen to what we talk about. It’s the perfect place to find out what plans the school has for learning and facilities, and what events we are planning. There is no pressure to join the P&C and it’s a great place to meet new people.

Keep an eye on the newsletter and Facebook for reminders.

Volunteering

Did you know: For volunteers, the experience gained can be immensely valuable in career progression. It offers a platform for acquiring new skills, enhancing one’s CV, and networking with professionals in various fields. Moreover, volunteering introduces individuals to real-world applications of their skills, which can be a persuasive asset in the job market, indicating a well-rounded and socially responsible character.

The P&C Association are an approved volunteer organization with Centrelink (Services Australia) so if you need to complete volunteering hours, the school is a great option. This can be extended to grandparents and other friends, they will need to apply for a Blue Card to volunteer in the school which is an easy process we can assist with. Contact us by email and we can arrange to work out how we can help each other.

Facebook Page

We try to keep our Facebook page very active with all our notices here along with the Audiri app.

If you haven’t already jumped onto our Facebook page, you should. It’s a great place to see what’s coming up, what volunteers are needed & helpful reminders in case you missed the notification. We’ll also share our tuckshop specials and any meal deal information, so if you don’t see the posts, you might miss out!

It’s also the easiest place to get in touch with P&C.

Just find our page and like us to start following. BSS P&C Facebook page

Events & Fundraising

Planning is well under way for our amazing Easter show on Easter Saturday, 19th April 2025, the last weekend of the school holidays.

This year we have more on offer and we need volunteers!!! Please get in touch if you are available to give a little time, as nothing happens without volunteers!

We are seeking raffle prizes so if you or your business are able to donate an item or two, or if your business is interested in sponsorship of part of the event, please get in touch with Carolyn on 0404 581058 or via email to pandc@beerwahss.eq.edu.au. The advertising opportunities are far reaching and very cost effective – social media, tourism websites, radio mentions, digital school sign, flyers, posters in all local businesses, plus more – it’s a fantastic way to boost your business and support our school. Get in touch today!

Entertainment Book

Don’t forget to keep an eye on our Facebook page for offers for the Entertainment membership. There are continuous bonuses, and we get 20% of the purchase price for our fundraising. Have a look at their website: www.entertainmentbook.com.au for current offers.

Book Club

The latest book club orders will be delivered once they have arrived at school, then the next issue will soon be with your child. The best way to order is online at www.scholastic.com.au/LOOP all books are delivered to the school and distributed to each child. If you would prefer to order as gifts, ensure you select that option and your items will be available for collection from the office.

Role Description of Executive Members of the P&C

TUCKSHOP

Do you have time on a Friday to help out for a short time? Are you able to assist in the tuckshop? We need your help! It’s not a job for one person, and even 20 minutes will be a great assistance.

If there is a need to cancel the tuckshop for any reason, notifications will be sent out ASAP and we will postpone until the following week. Please be patient as we work through any issues which may arise. As the tuckshop is run purely by volunteers, sometimes life gets complicated, and we have to swap things about at the last minute.

This term we will be travelling the world with our tastebuds! Each week a special from a particular country or region will be available.

The weekly special will be sent out on Audiri each week, along with updates on Facebook. Ordering must close at 6pm sharp on Qkr each Thursday as our volunteers need to shop and prepare. Orders will be prepared for first break Friday. Ordering is only through the Qkr! app, and must be before the cut-off. pandc@beerwahss.eq.edu.au

If you have ideas or suggestions for meals or inclusions, please get in touch.

UNIFORMS

School uniforms are available from The School Locker in Maroochydore.

Ordering is online or in-store, it’s so simple and convenient. Plus, by setting up your free Student Advantage Membership online, you will access special members pricing where applicable.

If you don’t have this information, look at the school website for details.

If you are uncertain of the size you require, one of each size of polo shirt and dress will be available in school to try on. Appointments need to be made in advance, please email janie.bssuniformshop@gmail.com to arrange an appointment.

The P&C have some second-hand uniforms available for sale at drastically reduced prices depending on the condition. Contact Janie at the above email address if you would like to have a look at what’s available.

If you have school polo shirts and dresses that are too small, or if your child is leaving school, please drop in your uniforms to the school office as we will happily re-sell to another family who can use them.

With limited volunteers and fundraising opportunities, this is one avenue that will help all families, and the P&C Association.

THANK YOU!

On behalf of our school community we'd like to thank Rumbalara Nursery at Glasshouse Mountains for their generous donation of vegetable seedlings.  These seedlings will be planted in our Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden and the Prep vegetable gardens.
