From the Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Chickenpox (Varicella)

There has still been a few new cases of Chickenpox in the school. We are continuing our additional cleaning and precautions to minimise transmission. Please watch your child for symptoms. If your child has chickenpox, they may:

•           have a mild fever

•           feel tired and irritable

•           be itchy

•           have a rash /blister like spots.

Please advise the school ASAP if you suspect your child has contracted Chickenpox.  

Children with chickenpox should not go to kindergarten or school until the last blister has dried.

Parents and Visitors to Lihir International School

We have had a number of cases of both parents and visitors to the school, walking through the school grounds without first checking in at the main administration office. While we encourage teacher / parent communication, it is preferred an appointment be arranged prior to any formal meetings. For any informal correspondence please do stop by the main administration office to touch base before entering the school.

Wellbeing

Last Friday, Lihir International School hosted our student mindfulness afternoon. Thank you to Ms Langusch, the Wellbeing Team and all teachers for organising this important afternoon - it was a huge success. Thank you also to Amanda Amidy  for coming to take our high school yoga sessions for the afternoon. Finally, thanks also to the P&W who made donations of fresh fruit as a healthy snack for all students from Prep to Grade 10 as part of this afternoon. Students really enjoyed this healthy treat.

Year 10 Written Expression Exam

Yesterday, Thursday, the 5th June, our fifth year 10 class sat for their Written Expression National Exam. Thanks to Ms Yip and our high school teachers for all their work in preparing our year 10 group.

Athletics

Ms Meauri and the assistant teachers are busy preparing students for their track and field sports carnival at the end of the term. The twilight track events will be held at 4pm on  Wednesday 18 June, followed by a sausage sizzle. Field events will be held on the Thursday morning (for years 1 - 10). All parents, friends and wantoks are encouraged to attend and support their child/children's house.

Grade 7/8 Cairns Trip

This week we set off for our grade 7/8 Trip to Cairns. We will keep you updated on our adventures through the LIS Facebook Page. We look forward to sharing our exciting stories when we return next Friday afternoon, 13 June.

LIS PNG Independence Celebrations 2025

Independence Day preparations are continuing. Thank you to those teachers and parents working on this. We will continue to keep you updated with plans and preparation for the big 50 Year Independence Celebrations.

AFTER SCHOOL SWIM CLUB SCHEDULE - Term 2: Parents and Guardians, please be reminded that students in Level 2, juniors and intermediate need supervision at the pool. If they do not have a supervisor, they will not be able to participate in the lesson.

Thank you to our P & W!

Thank you to our P & W for your great support of our school! The students enjoyed the fruit that was provided for our Wellbeing Day plus they also enjoy their weekly Canteen. Thank you to all the parents and helpers who support our Canteen program. Next Friday, the P & W are running a pop-up book and food stall after school. We encourage everyone to support this activity. Thank you to Skye and helpers for organising this great event!

Year 8 and 10 Exam Prep - Saturday classes

Saturday morning exam prep classes are on again this Saturday for year 10s however year 8 students will miss this week and next due to camp. A reminder that these sessions are compulsory for our year 8 and 10 students (except for students with religious beliefs) and it is important that students arrive on time. If your child is unable to attend a session due to illness or other reasons, please contact Ms Yip to explain their absence. Thank you to our STM staff for running these lessons.

Year 8 and year 10 Mock Exams

Our year 8 students sat their second round of Mock Exams Monday - Wednesday of this week and our year 10 students will sit their exams in week 8. It is important for students to be on time for these important exams. Teachers will analyse students' results to prepare for the holiday remedials which will be held the first week of the holidays. A program will be sent out later in the term about the holiday remedial schedule.

Friday assemblies

Each Friday, we hold a short assembly in the basketball court and parents and wantoks are welcome to attend. Today was the 3/4 Tok Pisin assembly and next week it will be the Student Council assembly. Friday assemblies commence at 8.10am.

Work Ready Program

This week the Trainees have covered the modules:

1. Working in a team – covers the following topics: stages of team development, factors that affect teamwork, ways to Improve teamwork, and the Importance of teamwork.

2. Meeting workplace expectations – enables the trainees to understand their roles at the workplace and execute their work using the appropriate resources and strategies to achieve the desired outcomes.

A good number of former WRP Trainees have been successful in their job interviews and are currently doing their onboarding.

A reminder again that towards the end of last year, we put a temporary stop to accepting new Work Ready Program Applications and this is still in effect. A Toksave will be sent out by mid-this year announcing when new WRP applications will be accepted.

FODE

FODE program has commenced for this Term and students are working at their own pace with the guidance and assistance from STM Staff.

Afternoon Remedials / IT / Exam Prep

Monday / Tuesday Remedials, Thursday IT (Computing) and Saturday Exam Prep will continue at STM.

What village are you from? I come from Lipuko Village, Lihir, NIP. I completed Gr.10 at Utmaie Secondary School. After that I studied Auto-Electrical at Vunamami Vocational Centre. I did 1 year of practical work in my speciality are that included all wirings on both light and heavy vehicles with Dalnan Contractors in Namatanai. I was also engaged in short-term work with the Shutdown Team within the Mine Operations, Crusher Department.

What do you want to do after you complete the Work Ready Program? After I complete my WR program, I would like to work with Newmont as Mine Operator. I would also like to join the Apprenticeship Training program in my speciality area.

What village are you from? I come from Kunaye 1 Village, Lihir, NIP. I did my Gr.10 at Utu Secondary School and Gr.12 at Vunabosco Agro Technical Secondary. After that I did my Diploma in Electrical Technology at Don Bosco Technological Institute in Port Moresby.

What do you want to do after you complete the Work Ready Program? After I complete the WR program, I like to work with Newmont as an Electrical Technician. I would also like to join the Apprenticeship Training program in my speciality area.
