FROM THE DEPUTY'S DESK

It's Never Too Late to be Punctual

Does your family start the day with repeated orders and pleading to various members to get up, get dressed, have their breakfast, pack their school bag, brush their teeth, catch the bus.

Some children are always late to school, to classes, with assignments and the chaos of their lives influences their ability to learn. A calm, well organised start to the day and successful time management help develop the habits that lead to good learning. Effective time management leads to greater contentment.

Satisfaction with how we use our time is an important predictor of happiness. Time is the basis on which we operate our lives and if we’re happy with the way we manage time, we’re happy with our life. Being late is a way of life for many people. But good timekeeping can be learnt. For some, lateness is the only way they can get anything done. They have convinced themselves that racing to the deadline is the way they work best and leave everything to the last minute to get that adrenaline rush that charges them up to get the job done. They usually never count the cost of the worry, feelings of panic and lying awake at night as the deadline looms and they haven’t yet started.

How can you change these habits? Help the unpunctual members of your family take responsibility for their own lateness. It pays to begin when they are young but it’s never too late to start.

  • Set alarms, establish routines like who is first to use the bathroom, have breakfast ready and expect them to be out the door on time. One unpunctual member of the family can raise the stress levels for everyone.
  • Try “To Do” lists and learn to enjoy ticking off each task as they get it done.
  • Keep a detailed calendar.
  • If necessary, set your watch and clocks five minutes early.
  • Use your technology (computer or phone) to send you reminders.

Students can:

  • Plan assignments with progress dates so they easily meet the deadline.
  • Aim to hand in work the day before it is due.

Class of the Week - 5/6P

Class 5/6P have been learning about symmetry. Each student created their own artwork that demonstrated rotational symmetry.

Each sector was carefully coloured using complimentary colours from the colour wheel to achieve the symmetrical effects.

Principal's Awards and Principal's Badges

Students receive values certificates from their teachers throughout the year for demonstrating our values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience.

Once a student receives 5 values certificates, they are able to trade them in at the school office for a Principal's Award.  The 5 values certificates can be a combination of the 3 school values and come from any year the student has been in.

Once the student has received 3 Principal's Awards, they can bring those 3 awards to the school office and choose their Principal's Badge from one of the 3 values.

Kindergarten Excursion to Berry Island Reserve

On Thursday, Kindergarten students travelled by bus to Berry Island Reserve in Wollstonecraft. There, we were not only treated to the most beautiful view of our city and harbour but an excursion with Koori Kinnections.

Our guides, Uncle Trent and Uncle Bob, took students on a walking tour around the island, teaching us about native flora. Back at the reserve, Shyan showed us artifacts and taught us how First Nations peoples hunted and gathered using implements sourced from the land.
