2024 Term 2 Issue #6

From the Principal

Dear families & friends,

Everyone is very busy as we head into the last week of term as you will see in the newsletter. We are looking forward to seeing everyone next week at a range of events you are all invited to!

Tuesday - Our annual Morialta Day

Thursday - Learning Expo at 2.15pm

Friday - Big Breakfast everyone welcome!

O.S.H.C.

This week was Hannah's last week with us before she goes on maternity leave. We wish her all the best for the arrival of her first baby. We can't wait to meet them. We welcome Emily, who has now stepped in officially as our Acting Director while Hannah is on leave.

As you would have seen with low numbers in OSHC this has put some pressure financially on the service. If you have the capacity to, just a few extra bookings will help the service to stay viable. Please see infomration below about the Child care subsidy cover you could receive to reduce out of pocket expences to as low as $3.00 for a 3 hour afternoon session.

2025 Enrolment intentions

We are already looking at staffing and enrolments for 2025. Everyone would have received the pink form regarding your intentions for next year. This includes younger siblings that are due to start beginning of mid year.

Please return these as soon as possible as this informs our planning, classes and staffing for next year.

If you know any one looking for a school encourage them to come in for a principal tour or chat as we are taking enrolments for beginning and mid year now.

If you have any questions please contact us.

We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday and look forward to working together again in Term 3.

Cheers Skye 😊

Hello, my name is Georgia and I am thrilled to introduce myself as a new SSO at Felixstow Primary School. I have been working in the school’s OSHC service for 2 years however, am excited to join this vibrant community and contribute to the growth of our students in the school. I am currently in my third year studying a Bachelor of Early Childhood Education (Honours) at the University of South Australia. I have a strong passion for children’s education and wellbeing. Please feel free to reach out and say hello anytime.

Acting Director OSHC - Welcome Emily

Welcome to Emily Guidolin, who joins us while Hannah is on maternity leave as our Acting Director of OSHC.

Emily has teacher qualifications and brings with her experience including working in other OSHC services and previous work as an SSO in special classes with children with diverse needs.

She is committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment where every student can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally and is committed to providing exceptional educational experiences for all students i collaboration with families and other staff.

Emily has quickly established relationships with the children and taken the reins over as she has worked shadowing Hannah over the past 3 weeks. We are excited to have her on board and know everyone will enjoy having her join our community.

Our O.S.H.C. needs you!

Book in with a friend and have a play date at school! đŸ˜ƒ

Our small but mighty OSHC needs your help to continue operating! Unfortunately, a drop in bookings this year is threatening the future viability of our service. Your bookings and enrolments are crucial for us to keep offering this service. With the new Child Care Subsidy in place OSHC is now more affordable than ever and most families only need to pay a small portion of our $30 after school care fee.

FOR EXAMPLE:

Your Family Income:  $0 - $80,000 = 90% CCS - you would pay approx only $3.00 for nearly 3 hours of entertainment for your child and 3 hours extra time for yourself!!

NB: Your Family Income: More than $80,000 to $530,000 = 90% - 0% - the percentage goes down by 1% for every $5,000 your family earns above $80,000.

You can calculate your increased Child Care Subsidy rate at:

https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/how-much-child-care-subsidy-you-can-get?context=41186

https://startingblocks.gov.au/child-care-subsidy-calculator (see attached image)

Your CCS percentage is paid directly to the OSHC service to reduce the fees you pay.

For more information or to enrol in the service please contact the Director Emily or Gillian at the front office.

Please help us save our OSHC!!

The aim of our project is to bring the local community closer together by sharing a garden and its goodies. The children will be involved in planning, growing, picking, cooking and selling the produce. The expected (environmental and educational) outcomes of the project include bringing the local community to our school and teaching the students ground to market experiences.

Felixstow Highlights

Primary

Hi From Steve's P1 Class

In P1 we have been working hard and the end of the term is in sight! In literacy we have been working on our scary recount narratives, and had a great lesson last week on the art of editing our work. The finished products should be ready for the end of term. In maths we have started to work on fractions, and are just starting a deep dive into adding fractions with like and unlike denominators. We have also been having a lot of fun with our weekly STEM and STEAM challenge, with the last one being to design a shelter for a critter out of Lego bricks, the idea being to both keep the rain off and to look good also! With rain forecast all week, they are going to get a good work out! And finally, in Auslan, we have just begun to write our scripts for a fable, where the fable will be acted out in Auslan.

News from Laura's Class

Students acknowledged National Reconciliation Week by exploring the 2024  theme 'Now more than ever', a reminder to all of us that no matter what, the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will and must continue. Students listened to Blackfella/Whitefella by Warumpi Band and unpacked the lyrics to understand the meaning. They then responded to the song with messages of reconciliation. This week we will be exploring NAIDOC week 7th July-14th July and the theme of 'Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud' which is a nod to the vitality and endurance of culture, a connection with country and community and a celebration of identity. Students will be taking part in a webinar-NAIDOC portraits. They will explore ideas and artworks of and by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to use as inspiration for their own representation.

Juniors

Hello from Emma's Juniors

Last week in Juniors we visited our friends at Goodstart Early Learning. The kids shared a story with the children and had some time to explore their environment. In Inquiry, we have been recycling paper to create new things such as, weaving, making paper and puppets. In literacy we have been working on oral retell, retelling narratives such as nursery rhymes.

Juniper's Juniors

In J1 we have been exploring math concepts, part-part-whole and more than and less than. We had lots of fun with counters and connecting disks. As part of inquiry we are looking at sustainability with a focus on trees and paper. Our excursion to KESAB helped us know what bins to put our rubbish in, and what happens to the rubbish after it is collected from our house and school. The paper goes in a big tumbler before it can be taken off to be remade into new paper products.

Art and HPE

Visual Arts with Camille

Primary students have nearly finished their ghost gum portraits, drawn from life and inspired by Albert Namatjira's watercolours. Junior primary students have started a bird portrait in acrylic paint, inspired by Nyangula Katie Nalgood's work 'Seasons and Time'.

Health and Physical Education with Leigh

Over the past few weeks, we have been exploring striking and fielding skills and games within P.E. The students have been working on hitting balls, catching and throwing. In health, we have been continuing to look at problem solving skills, both in fiction and in real life scenarios.

NAIDOC Week

Celebrate NAIDOC Week đŸ–€đŸ’›â€ïž

As NAIDOC Week is approaching (July 7th to 14th),  celebrating the week which honours the rich history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

What is NAIDOC Week?

NAIDOC Week, which stands for the National Aborigines’ and Islanders’ Day Observance Committee, is a time to recognise and celebrate the enduring history and cultural contributions of First Nations peoples in Australia. It originated from Aboriginal rights groups in the 1920s and became an annual national celebration in 1975.

 Why Do We Celebrate?

NAIDOC Week provides an opportunity for all Australians to acknowledge the importance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and their contributions to our society. This year’s theme, "Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud", celebrates resilience and pride in Indigenous identities. It's a call to commemorate the rich and multifaceted cultures of Australia's First Nations peoples and to continue in preserving heritage, language, and identity for future generations. NAIDOC week's observance showcases their artistic expressions, musical traditions, dance forms, languages, and cultural practices, cultivating deeper understanding and appreciation within the broader Australian populace. Furthermore, NAIDOC Week also underscores the ongoing challenges and inequities confronted by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, such as disparities in health outcomes, educational attainment, and socioeconomic status. It serves as a platform to raise awareness and promote constructive dialogue surrounding these critical issues.
