Celebrating a Term of Growth, Achievement & Community

As Term 3 draws to a close, we take this opportunity to celebrate the incredible dedication and achievements of our students and staff across all areas of the school. There are so many curricular and extra-curricular events and special moments to celebrate. I encourage you to revisit both our Term 3 newsletters and Facebook to glean just how busy and engaged our whole school community has been.

Miles Experiences

Our students have continued to shine through their positive engagement in the Miles Experiences. They have demonstrated, commitment, teamwork, and resilience.

  • Experience Sporting Success

We proudly acknowledge those who have represented our school at regional and state levels in a variety of sports—your hard work and sportsmanship are truly commendable and your wear our school and region colours with pride.

  • Experience Academic Success

Senior students remain on track to successfully attain their QCE and QCIA qualifications, already there are strong academic outcomes. Across all year levels, we have seen a positive trend in student achievement across a wide range of subjects, reflecting the ongoing efforts of both students and staff to ‘Strive to Achieve.’

  • Experience a Supportive Community

Our school continues to foster a safe and inclusive environment through strong engagement with families, community organisations, and industry partners. This term, we have been proud to receive recognition at local, regional, and state levels for our collaborative efforts in building a nurturing and future-focused learning community.

  • Experience Your Future

Senior students are making the most of their final years, actively exploring future pathways and preparing for life beyond school. Already, as in the past, doors for our students’ future pathways are beginning to open. Whether through vocational training, university preparation, or industry engagement, our students are carving out exciting futures with confidence and purpose.

Miles SHS Student Leadership Roles

Over the last week, eight Year 11 students engaged in a rigorous process to apply for student leadership positions for Term 4 2025 and Term 1, 2 & 3 2026. The panel made up of Mr Wilson, and Mrs Smith our P&C/Community representative along with me. We were in awe of the maturity and calibre of every student as they undertook individual interviews and presented their speeches to a full assembly. During the interview, each candidate discussed their positive school experiences at Miles SHS and how they feel those experiences have shaped them. They all expressed a heartfelt desire to be part of, and contribute to their school. They outlined how they wanted to continue its traditions and bring forth their mark with some new ones. The panel struggled to make decisions as each candidate was exceptional and we all agreed had the qualities and passion to be successful student leaders of Miles SHS. Congratulations to all eight students, I know your parent/carers would have been so immensely proud of your presentation and passion to play a big part in leading our student body and wider community as moving in 2025/2026 school years.

It is at this time that I want to thank our 2024/25 student leaders for their amazing contribution to our school. School Captains – Ingrid Young and Zoe York, Vice Captain – Riley Harrison, Student Wellbeing Representative – Rahnee Little, Binbian House Captain – Daniel Igiraneza and Cameby House Captain – Leah Forsythe. The new team of student leaders has a lot to look up to. The experiences you have had throughout your time at Miles SHS and in your student leadership positions will have provided you with maturity, skills, and knowledge to move into your next phase of your life’s journey.

As we head into the final term of the year, we thank our entire school community for their ongoing support and commitment to Miles SHS. Let’s continue to build on this momentum and finish the year strong!

Enjoy your well-earned spring break, be safe.

Miles State High School Colour Run Bursts with RISE Spirit

Friday, September 19th, will be remembered as one of the brightest days of the year at Miles State High School. Under a brilliant blue Queensland sky, students, staff, and families gathered on the oval for an unforgettable Colour Run that turned the grounds into a rainbow of laughter and energy.

The event kicked off with excitement as the Miles Fire Brigade arrived, siren whooping and a gleaming fire truck rolling onto the field. Their presence brought an extra buzz of excitement—and more than a few photo opportunities!

Across the oval, multiple obstacle courses awaited: crawling tunnels, balance beams, water sprays, and inflatable barriers—each one designed to test teamwork, resilience, and a good sense of humour. It wasn’t just about running; it was about having fun, encouraging each other, and living out our RISE values—Respect, Integrity, Safety, and Engage—in every colourful step.

One of the highlights was celebrating the VIP runners. Over the past five weeks, these students consistently demonstrated outstanding behaviour and classroom engagement, earning their special status. With bright sunglasses and matching headbands, they looked every bit the champions. Their rewards—free BBQ lunch, priority DJ requests, and the chance to run first through the colour clouds—made their efforts even sweeter.

DJ Grand Master Smith cranked up the music, and the first blast of colour powder erupted into the air. Students sprinted, danced, and slid their way through the obstacles, while the fire brigade added a refreshing spray of water that sent squeals of delight echoing across the field. Teachers and spectators joined the cheering, and even the staff got covered in colour before long.

A huge round of applause and gratitude goes to Miss Hoonhout and Miss Fowkes, whose hard work and creativity brought the obstacle courses to life. Their attention to detail and energy ensured every part of the course was safe, exciting, and fun. Of course, it was a team effort and thank you to all the staff and student helpers who made this day possible.

By the end of the day, students walked off the field smiling—faces streaked with pinks, blues, and yellows—proud not only of the memories made but of the values they’d displayed. The Colour Run was more than an event: it was a celebration of community, perseverance, and the spirit of Miles State High School.

Exciting News: Welcoming Harley, Our Wellbeing Dog

We are thrilled to announce that Miles State High School is about to launch the Dogs Connect program. This is a whole-school wellbeing initiative that will see the introduction of a wellbeing dog, Harley, into our community.

Harley will soon become a much-loved and important member of our school, supporting the wellbeing of students, staff, and families. The Dogs Connect program will guide us in implementing this thoroughly and with great care, to ensure the best possible outcomes for our community.

For those who would like to learn more about the program, we encourage you to visit the Dogs Connect website: https://dogsconnect.net.au.

We have a dedicated team of staff leading this program and will share more information with you in early next term. Importantly, we want to assure our community that involvement with Harley will always be a choice—no one will be asked to participate if they do not wish to.

We are confident that Harley will have a truly positive impact at Miles SHS, offering connection, comfort, and joy in many different ways across our school.

CCCI Ignite Your Futures Tour

The Ignite Your Futures Tour is back! Taking place on Thursday October 16, our Year 9 and 10 students are invited to tour the region where local career pathways, industry opportunities and hands-on experiences will be showcased. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to engage with professionals, explore future possibilities and connect with our vibrant community. Letters with more information and permission forms will be going home with Year 9 and 10 students this week to be returned as soon as possible.

Work Experience

We have had students out on work experience this week and more scheduled to participate in work placements over their school holidays. Some of the interest areas the students are exploring through work experience are:

  • Early childhood education
  • Diesel mechanics
  • Feedlotting and agriculture
  • Veterinary science

I am so impressed by the motivation displayed by these young people and trust that they will have great learning experiences in their chosen placements.

If your student is interested in exploring a work placement in Term 4 to help them decide on a career pathway, please encourage them to connect with me, Mrs Beutel, in the Flexi-Centre (on Tuesday or Thursday each week).
