Principal's Message

Dear Community

Over the last few weeks, we have started planning for our upcoming athletics carnival events. As we are still quite limited for space, the carnival will once again be held at Deanmore Square. The throws and distance races are scheduled for Wednesday 13 September with the main carnival day taking place on Friday 15 September.

As mentioned last term, we are renaming our Houses to better align with current values and to support the general de-colonisation of the Australian and Western Australian Curriculums. We have started the process of doing this over the last few weeks and are likely to have the new names in place in time for our athletics carnival.

We have begun the process with Student Voice, gathering the ideas of our student council. Our amazing councillors then came up with about 15 different ideas, and with staff input, these have been narrowed down to a final 5.  All students, staff, parents and the community will now be given the opportunity to vote and help us choose our new House names. Please look out for a survey which will be sent out on Audiri (Skoolbag) in the next few days and complete the form to have your say!

The full process for the name change is outlined below:

  1. Brainstorming Session: Deputy Principal to organize a brainstorming session with student council. Encourage students to suggest potential House names that reflect the school's values, beliefs or location (e.g. beach, Perth, WA).
  2. Research and Presentation: Each student to research the significance behind their proposed House names. During the next meeting, each student to present their suggestions to the Deputy Principal, sharing the reasons behind their choices.
  3. Shortlisting: Based on the presentations, staff will narrow down the list to a smaller set of House names (3-5). Aim for options that resonate with the school's values, and represent our community.
  4. School and Community Voting: On air announcement of shortlist, then students and staff will vote on their favourite House names. Share shortlist with parents and Carers and ask for votes via a Forms voting system. This will be anonymous, to encourage honest and unbiased selections.
  5. Final Decision: Votes will be counted by the student councillors. The final decision will be based on the student votes and additional inputs from staff and parents.
  6. Announcement and Celebration: Once the new House names are selected, an on-air assembly will be held to announce and celebrate the decision. The greater school community will be advised.
  7. House Identity Development: Work with students from each House will be ongoing to continue developing a unique identity for each. This may include designing House logos, mottos, and organizing House-specific events and competitions on top of our current sporting events and House points.

The shortlisted options that will be put to a vote are:

  • Noongar names for animals (for example, Yogna, Kaakaa, Djidi Djidi)
  • Noongar seasons (for example, Kambarang, Makuru, Birak)
  • Nature – (for example, Sun, Ocean, Sand)
  • Noongar colours ( for example, Yoont, wooyan, mirda)
  • Noongar sea creatures - (for example, Karil, Maamoong, Kwila)

Book week
is fast approaching (Week 6) so below is a bit of a summary of what has and is happening this year to help our students foster a love of books and reading.

  • Public Library excursions: All PP – Year 6 classes will be walking to the Scarborough Public Library over the course of the term to participate in activities there. This has been thoroughly enjoyed by the classes that have gone so far.
  • Friday Morning Reading Group: A big THANK YOU goes out to Anastasia, one of our wonderful Year 1 parents who ran Friday morning sessions to read the CBA shortlisted Early Childhood picture books to a group of students. Votes for their favourite book have been submitted to help determine this year's winner. We also won a 'street library' out of the experience, so stay tuned for more detail on that! Thanks to Mrs Potter as well for helping by supervising the group each Friday morning.
  • Class Books: Like last year, each classroom is also creating their own book for the library. They will be put on display for the rest of the year from Book Week. Our students loved spending time reading their own work last year, so are already looking forward to this year’s new publications!
  • Community Song: Mrs Bird has been teaching students the I Luvva B double O K song for book week. Ask your children to sing a bit of it for you! However, be warned: It’s one of those tunes that will get stuck in your head!.
  • Book character dress up day: This will be held on THURSDAY, 24 AUGUST. More info will follow about the format that a parade may take. As with many things this year, the format and timing may be dependent on the weather.

School Board

  • Our next meeting will be held next Wednesday, 16 August, from 6:30 pm
  • Agenda items will include discussions around Voice to Parliament information, the changing of House names, development of a new ICT Policy and a Capital Works update.

As always, if you have any queries, please do not hesitate to call, or email me on Sarah.Dawson@education.wa.edu.au

P&C News

Hello SPS families!

We have had a great start to the term for the P&C with lots of behind the scenes action in preparation for the rest of the year and into 2024.

On Wednesday night, we had our social quiz night at Grill’d Scarborough. It was a great night, enjoyed by all with a tie breaker required to decide the winning table! We also raised around $1,000 for the P&C to put towards future projects. A special mention to Shannon McKenzie for all your hard work to make the night such a success!

Father's Day

An order form for our Father's Day gift fundraiser has been sent home today, we have also attached a copy below or you can download a copy here. Please get your orders in by next Friday to allow Bunnings and our P&C members to have the pizza herb pots organised in time.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please email us! scarboroughprimarypc@gmail.com

NEXT MEETING

Our next General Meeting will be held Tuesday 29 August at 6:30 pm in the school library. It is a great opportunity to find out what is happening, make suggestions, and get an update on the progress of the new build! All welcome, we would love to see you there!

UNIFORM SHOP

The Uniform Shop is open on Wednesday mornings 8:45 am to 9:15 am in Room 8. We are well stocked, with an excess of hats if you need a spare! We are planning to hold another second hand sale towards the end of the term. If you have any unwanted items, please donate them to the uniform shop on Wednesday mornings, or to the office during school hours.

Order forms can be downloaded from the school website https://scarboroughps.wa.edu.au/p-c/uniforms/

CANTEEN

We have been able to set up a canteen volunteer group so Laura, our wonderful Canteen Leader, has a few parents that are trained up and can help once or twice a term. There is always space for more volunteers, so if you would like to help out, please get in contact with Laura or Teneke (Canteen Coordinator).

The time needed to volunteer is Friday mornings between 11:00 am -12:30 pm.

Please also note that all canteen orders need to be placed via QuickCliq prior to 8:30 am on Friday.

ENTERTAINMENT BOOK

We continue to fundraise through the Entertainment Book. When you purchase the Entertainment Book, a portion will go to the P&C.

Order your membership here https://www.entertainment.com.au/orderbooks/86y129

CONTAINERS FOR CHANGE

We will continue to fundraise through the Containers for Change initiative. The Containers for Change bins can be found at the school entry at Hinderwell Street near the Room 9 Heritage Building. Keep on bringing those empty cans and bottles to support the P&C! Please note that we have previously given the wrong scheme ID, so double check next time you’re donating that it is the one above.

THESE BINS ARE NOT FOR RUBBISH BUT FOR ELIGIBLE EMPTY DRINK CONTAINERS ONLY, THANK YOU!

Alternatively, if you wish to donate at a refund point of your choosing you can quote our Scheme ID C10284773. If you prefer to attend a Reverse Vending Machine location, please use the barcode at the top of the P&C news. This may be your preference if you have a larger donation and be rest assured that the money goes back to the P&C.
