Message from the Principal

There has been plenty of excitement in the school yard with a koala sighting in the trees outside the Junior Primary building this week. Many students have enthusiastically shown me the koala resting in the tree at different times throughout the day. It has been wonderful to see and hear the excitement in the students when talking about our visitor. A special thanks to Ida (SSO) for her photo.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Alison, our canteen manager for her work in our school canteen. Alison is the friendly face that greets students at break times and has worked hard to support our student volunteers since she began in 2022.  Alison has let us know that she will be finishing at Dernancourt on June 16th, and we are sad to see her go. We will begin advertising for a new canteen manager as soon as possible and an advert will be shared in school communications soon.  We invite you to share this information with anyone who may be interested.  This also means that there will be a disruption to our canteen service, with a short period of closure.  We will share more information next week.

We are currently taking registrations of interest for enrolment at Dernancourt School in 2024. If you are already part of the wonderful Dernancourt community and have a younger sibling that is due to begin school next year, please see Caroline or Sharyn in the office to begin the process for registration of interest. Information about upcoming school tours is also available from the office.

Our next pupil free day is coming up on Monday June 19. Staff will be engaged in Professional Development with Madhavi Nawana Parker from Positive Minds Australia and will be working together on learning culture and wellbeing. Thank you for your support of this day.

The Dental for Schools program will be running at Dernancourt in Week 8, from Tuesday June 20 to Friday June 24. This initiative has been well supported by families.

Lastly, I wish you all a restful long weekend with your families. I hope you are all able to do something that you enjoy and that the weather allows us to appreciate some sunshine.

Watch This Space! Have you noticed our old mural on the side of the canteen has been taken down? Early next term we have Violet Buckskin an Aboriginal artist from Winda Creations (pictured) coming to work with us on creating a new mural on the old boards. Violet shares her knowledge of Aboriginal Lore while leading students through a process of creating a mural. Exciting- watch this space!

SRC REPORT

SRC Report

The lemon and mandarin stalls were a great success! We raised $134.  Thank you to the SRC’s and Garden Club for picking the delicious fruit to share with our school community. The SRC committee have been hard at work thinking about what we can do with the money raised. The new recycling bins have been great and are filling up with lots of drink cans, cartons and water bottles. Some students have worked hard to create recycling posters and we have displayed these around the school. We have been busy thinking of ideas about the theme for the Early Years colouring in competition. SRC’s decided that dogs and Pokémon were our winning themes. More information about this will be available in the coming weeks.

On June 22 (Thursday Week 8) it is B Kinder Day. The purpose of B Kinder Day is to discuss kindness, empower and inspire. It is about connecting people, being inclusive and being kind to all. Classes will be coming up with ideas about what we could do for each other on B Kinder Day.

Garden Group - Week 5

Garden Club Week 6

Our helpers for Garden Club this week were Ryder J3, Luca J4, Loice P2, Harrison P10 and Ebony P14. We could see that some of the wheat that the volunteers planted last week were beginning to sprout. The helpers then did some weeding of the garden beds and placed some fresh mulch around the outside. Kind regards,
