Burton Primary School Newsletter

Term 2, Week 3, 2023

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Carers,

The 2022 Annual Report

Every year, every South Australian school is required to report to its community about the last school year. Our 2022 Annual Report has been approved by the Education Director at the Para Hills Education Office, and can now be released.

In the Annual Report there are sections on:

- Highlights of 2022

- The Governing Council Report

- Improvements we have made

- Aboriginal education

- Overall school performance, including NAPLAN

- Attendance

- The Student wellbeing survey

- The Parent Opinion Survey

- Funding

We have placed a copy of the 2022 Annual Report on our website, and you can also find it using this link Burton Primary School - Department for Education (burtonps.sa.edu.au)

We have made improvements in many aspects of literacy, which was our priority for 2022. The “School Performance” section from the Annual Report is included below, which gives details about our many literacy improvements. It is pleasing that we reached or exceeded most of the high literacy targets we set for ourselves.

“School Performance Comment”

Improving student literacy levels was our single priority for 2022. Burton Primary School has continued to invest heavily in Literacy professional development, resources and staff knowledge development. Based on our 2021 performance, we set ourselves high targets for 2022 to help challenge our students and staff to reach their full potential in literacy. We have had pleasing growth in a number of areas, as can be seen in our data.

READING

For Reception we aimed for 80% of students to score above 14 in the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check and had 83% meet that target.

With a strong focus on teaching phonics, we aimed for 85% of students enrolled in Year 1 doing the Phonics Screening Check to achieve the required level, which is called the Standard of Educational Achievement (the SEA). We had 73% reach this target, up from 21% back in 2019, and 67% in 2021.

For Year 2 we aimed for 65% of students to achieve SEA in the PAT-Reading (PAT-R) testing and had 67% achieve this. We aimed for 60% of students enrolled in Year 2 in 2022 to achieve a score of 40 in the Phonics Screening Check. We had 33% achieve this.

For Year 3, 86% of students achieved the SEA in NAPLAN Reading. We aimed for 40% of Year 3 students to reach the Higher Bands in NAPLAN Reading and we reached that target. 53% of students enrolled in Year 3 in 2022 achieved a score of 40 in the Phonics Screening Check in 2022 but we had aimed for 75%.

In Year 4 we aimed for 85% to reach SEA in PAT-R and had 79% meet the target.

For Year 5, 80% of students achieved the SEA in NAPLAN Reading. We had 18% of Year 5 students reach the higher bands of NAPLAN, and had aimed for 35% of students to do this.

In Year 6 we aimed for 90% of students to achieve SEA in PAT-R and had 82% reach this.

The 2022 PAT R data demonstrated ongoing improvement in reading comprehension skills. Highlights were year 3 and 4 students with significant growth in students achieving SEA or above. Year 3, 5 and 6 students demonstrated strengths in narrative text types, with year 4 students demonstrating strength in information and procedural texts. A focus for 2023 will be developing the student skills of interpreting explicit and implied information. This will further support students to demonstrate 12 months or more growth in their reading comprehension skills.

Student borrowing from the library is a good indicator of increased reading confidence and improvement. In 2022, book borrowing numbers (per student) increased to 112 books/items per year. This is well up from 2020 when the average per student borrowing was 71 books.

WRITING

In Year 3 writing, 92% of students achieved the SEA, up from 79% in 2021, and 68% back in 2018. In Year 5 writing, 78% of students achieved the SEA, up from 68% in 2021, and 61% in 2018.

GRAMMAR

In Year 3 Grammar, 85% of students achieved the SEA.

In Year 5 Grammar, 97% of students achieved the SEA, up from 86% in 2021, and 61% in 2019.

SPELLING

In Year 3 Spelling, 89% of students achieved the SEA, up from 83% in 2021, and 64% in 2018.

In Year 5 Spelling, 98% of students achieved the SEA, up from 79% in 2021, and 66% in 2018.

The monitoring of student performance data, and attending to each student's individual needs has been a continued focus of 2022. Our Curriculum Review and Management (CRAM) meetings brought together staff teams to discuss individual student data, growth, and future goals. These meetings then form a central role in determining intervention for students who are not being successful.

Overall, we have seen strong growth in student results for NAPLAN and PAT-R over time. A key challenge for 2023 is to further develop our intervention approaches. Using the Orton Gillingham approach to intervention and having teachers rather than SSOs deliver intervention will be two other significant changes. Broadening teacher knowledge of assessment in writing and following whole school agreements with fidelity are other challenges for 2023. “

Updated Guidance for Management of COVID-19

The Chief Public Health Officer has approved updated guidance for management of COVID-19 in schools.

SA Health strongly recommends that staff, students and children with symptoms stay home and reminds people that approximately 50% of COVID-19 cases will still be infectious at day 5.

For Sale By Tender

Recently we installed new touch screen interactive televisions into all our classrooms. The old televisions we had have been replaced by much better, more sophisticated technology.

Therefore, we have a number of televisions available for “salvage” sale. These Toshiba and Hisense televisions are 170cms (67 inches) across, from 2016/2017.

All were in working order when replaced, and would be ideal for both indoor and outdoor areas. However, they will be sold with no guarantees or warranty. To register your interest, please contact our Business Manager (Julie Pickles) before the end of May.

Weet-Bix Active Bands

Weet-Bix Active Bands is a fun, FREE way for Aussie kids to keep active and be rewarded along the way. Designed for kids aged 5 to 12 years, Weet-Bix Active Bands combines a super cool wrist band with an interactive app, with heaps of activities and challenges to make exercise fun - https://vimeo.com/694287666.

Weet-Bix Active Bands Program for Schools

Designed, developed, and operated by Athletics Australia, Active Bands® is an exciting and fun platform that encourages children to be more physically active, more often. Active Bands unites the digital and physical worlds with a clever mix of science and technology to enhance your school's activity program.

Only 19% of Australian children aged 5 to 17 are meeting the recommended guidelines of 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity a day. Athletics Australia, through Active Bands, is taking a lead role in influencing and assisting Aussie kids to be more physically active.

If you share this vision with us, we would love to work with you to achieve a real and measurable difference. It can easily integrate into your physical education programs and support efforts to increase physical literacy levels across the school community.

How does Active Bands Work?

• Your child will need a very cool Weet-Bix Active Bands wristband. It contains a unique identifier to connect to your smartphone. The wristband allows your child’s activity sessions to be recorded in the app.

• Once you have ordered your Active Bands wristband here, simply download the Weet-Bix Active Bands app from the App Store here or Google Play store here.

• Follow the easy-to-follow steps to create a profile for you and your child. As part of this your child can customise their very own avatar.

• The app will show you how easy it is to scan the band to register and record activity as you and your child enjoy the Weet-Bix Active Bands Program while it tracks progress and earns the child digital rewards.

• Every minute of activity along with intensity of activity converts to one measure, Weet-Bix Active Points. These points accumulated determine the health of the child’s avatar. The more active your child is, the more points are collected. Your child will enjoy helping their avatar progress from level to level. 1,500 Weet-Bix Active Points per day keeps the avatar healthy (and meets the Government guidelines).

• There are heaps of fun activities in the app to select from. Parents can select from menus of Sport Skills and Active Games or create your own activities from within the dedicated Weet-Bix Active Bands® app.

• Children can complete activities anytime, anywhere, by themselves or with friends and family. • Participating coaches and teachers can set up their lessons and programs in the system and log each individual child’s participation, simply by scanning their band.

• You will always be able to see how active your child has been in a given day, week, month, or year. It's great for goal setting and maintaining healthy activity levels. Each Weet-Bix Active Bands® wristband is washable, and because they don’t have batteries, they don’t need to be recharged!
