Crafers Primary School

Newsletter 7 June 2024

From the Principal

Recent weeks have seen the Crafers spirit in full flight with a flurry of activities everywhere one looks.

Demonstrations of commitment and courage have presented in the form of auditions for the Band, soloists and choreographers. These have occurred alongside the efforts of children competing in local and state sporting events including orienteering, netball and cross country running. This week has seen our youngest students travelling down to Marion for Swimming lessons, hopping in the pool and developing new skills. Fridays have seen our children host assemblies.

I often sit and reflect on how this (and much more) is possible for a relatively small primary school - it's a hive of activity with something happening all the time! The children's 'buy in' is incredible - they certainly make the most of their opportunities. Having said that, this article is actually in recognition of our Volunteers, without whom very little of this could happen. At a recent Assembly, I spoke about the enormous impact our volunteers have on growing and supporting our children here at Crafers. With only a few examples, learning bears, Choir, Band and excursions, we could demonstrate that every child in our school had already been enabled through our volunteers this year. There are so many examples of help we recieve, to list them would create a very long article indeed. It's inspiring to know, however, that we have families who continue to volunteer even after their children have moved on to high schools, we have generations of families who volunteer and have done for years and we have new volunteers bringing suggestions all the time about how people can be a part of our Crafers community.

To all who have helped, in so many ways I want to say THANK YOU and yes, the capital letters do symbolise a 'shout out'.

Crafers is what it is, in part because of you - on behalf of the staff, the children and other families who are assisted, I want you to know how truly grateful we are!

Kind regards

Chan

Introducing our Governing Council: Carl Bowey

Hi, I'm Carl Bowey, father to Charlie who started in Reception in Mrs Smith's class this year.  I work as a Capital and Engineering Project Manager for BlueScope Steel.  My partner Amber and I moved to Crafers 10 years ago and love the country feel -  I grew up in country SA and like a bit more space around me!

I look forward to contributing to the CPS governing council and have also joined the facilities committee to help out where I can.

A message from Amy

It has been such a privilege to be able to work at Crafers Primary while Ebony is away enjoying motherhood.

I have been in awe of the hard work and talents that all Crafers Primary students bring to  school, and have also admired the staff’s efforts and hard work alongside these bright students.

I have been grateful of parents' commitment and support of their children, it is uplifting.

I am looking forward to spending more time at Crafers, please feel free to contact me at any time.

Kind regards

Amy

Pedal Prix - Race One, Tailem Bend

Crafers Primary did really well in the Australian Human Powered Vehicle Super Series at Tailem Bend on 18 May.

Crafers Primary had 3 trikes racing in the primary school category (22 trikes raced in this category in total) with all of our trikes finishing in a top 10 place!

Here are the results:
The Comet - 3rd place
The Edge - 4th place
Snappin Pappin - 10th Place

Unlike last year, the sun was out for this race and the blue sky and warmer temperature made a big difference! All of the kids put in their best effort after months of training twice a week before school and this was the first time many of the children had been in a race situation on the track, so some were very nervous!

Now we are working towards our next training day at Victoria Park on Friday 14 June, which should see more confidence boosting  some great lap times.

On Monday, 27 May 20 students from Crafers Primary participated in the annual SA Schools Orienteering Championships held in Wadmore Park.

Courses were between 1.4 and 2.0 kilometres long with up to 15 controls to locate. All our students did amazingly well - with a few making the podium.

Ethan John - 1st (Mens, 10yo)
Poppy Townsend - 3rd (Womens, 10yo)
Henry Dean & Finn Petiet - 1st (Mens, 11yo pairs)
Zachary Summerton - 3rd (Mens, 12 yo)
Gemma Barolo & Leila Kenyon - 3rd (Womens - 13 yo pairs)

All of our students contributed to the final placing of Crafers overall - second

Thank you to all the parent volunteers who assisted on the day, Christine Cavaiuolo for her coordination, Zita Sankauskas for helping us with all our training sessions, and Katie Hesketh-Smith for introducing such a unique sport to our school.

Crafers Crocs in Knock-out Netball

Netball triumph and loss

In the first game we played against Modbury West and we had a spectacular win. We won 26 to 4. Then we moved to the next round against Saint Mary’s.

Saint Marys were an extremely hard team, but we were up for the challenge. Our first quarter went well, but sadly our team just missed some opportunities moving the ball down the court and scoring. We lost 6 to 36. This means that we will not progress to the next round.

Our team took the many of the best intercepts. Gemma, Kayla, Tully and Isla were the intercepting stars. Our marvelous attackers and goal scorers were Zara, Ayla, Lattie and Audrey. These girls scored incredible goals against giant players twice their size. Our dynamic defenders, Kayla, India, Tallulah, Lucy and Isla worked tirelessly to rebound the ball and stop the opposition from scoring.

Our team might have been small in comparison to Saint Mary’s, but we fought as hard as we could.

In a special event, Room 3 joined Rooms 1 and 2 for Story Time, where Carol captivated everyone with her reading of Bower Bird Blues. Following the story, students took part in an exciting scavenger hunt. This activity not only reinforced their understanding of the story but also encouraged teamwork and the formation of new friendships.

Room 4 News

This term the class has been learning about the different celebrations that occur both in Australia and around the world. They began by making a paper tearing piece of art work of poppies. They watched some videos about ANZAC Day, Australia Day NAIDOC and Reconciliation Day. The children have been fascinated with the war and the reasons behind how it started, there have been many books, stories and discussions about the importance of remembering significant events. Please view the poppies, the ANZAC Day symbols and symbols around the school they the class have worked on.

The class also joined in with the National simultaneous Storytelling event on May 22nd, reading the book ‘Bowerbird Blues’ by Aura Parker. It was a great book full of beautiful illustrations, which led to some research on Bowerbirds and some creative art and craft that went with it.

In History, the class has been learning about Aboriginal culture ‘Who lived here first and how do we know?’  They have investigated cave and rock art, the footprints and evidence found in Mungo National Park, used note-taking skills to find out about various aspects of life such as bush medicine and bush tucker, dreaming stories, languages, clothing and ancient rocks. Students worked with a partner to show their understanding of a particular topic and made it into a small poster. They are currently working on a research project which will be written as an information report.
