From the Principal

Welcome to 2025!

I hope everyone has had a wonderful Summer holidays and are managing to get back to school and workplace routines easily enough!

We have started the year very well, welcoming our new Reception students as well as several students who have joined us across the school. We also welcome some new faces on staff whom you can read about in this newsletter.

As usual staff were in school not long after Christmas preparing workspaces for the new year, and then were formally back for 'Week Zero' planning and organisation on Thursday and Friday before children started. As as staff we revisited our personal values and modelled the work that we then did with our students in Week 1. We reconsidered the school expectations and added a premise behind them. They now read like this:

Expectation 1: Come to class prepared to learn. Premise: Understand and appreciate your purpose in coming to school

Expectation 2:  Everyone has the right to learn. Premise:  Understand and appreciate that your behaviour impacts others

Expectation 3:  Everyone has the right to feel and be safe. Premise: Understand and appreciate that we make our own choices and need to 'own' them

These expectations form the foundations of our thinking at NPS and  consequently we can all experience and enjoy a wonderful teaching and learning environment. As ever should you have any questions or problems throughout the year please make sure that you contact your classroom teacher in the first instance and, if preferred, myself or other members of the Leadership team.

We are stoked (that's me being all Australian😉) to be working together with your child(ren) this year !

Week 0 Staff Days

Staff enjoying a 'positive primer'.

A positive primer is part of our Morning Circle. It is a quick activity which creates positive emotions to help children (and adults) engage positively with learning. This week I have seen classes doing quick quizzes ("How many fruits can you name in one minute?"), little videos, and sharing holiday snaps!

From the Deputy Principal

Welcome Back.

Welcome to a brand-new school year! I hope everyone had a great break. We are thrilled to have our students back in the classrooms, ready for a year full of learning, growth, and new experiences. Our start to the year has been great. Our initial conversations and work around values and expectations have seen the students embrace their start to school. Classes are very settled and are well and truly into the groove of teaching and learning. I have been very impressed with the attitude of the students in class and the respect they show each other. Teachers are enthusiastic and keen to engage their students in quality teaching and learning experiences, with a strong focus on getting to know the students.

The weather has been very hot, which has increased our focus on hats in the yard and ensuring students drink plenty of water. Please make sure your children have a wide-brimmed hat and plenty of water for their day at school.

The earlier time of year for NAPLAN continues this year. This testing will begin on Wednesday 12th March (Week 7) and will involve year 3 and 5 students. Information for parents of students in these year levels will be sent home shortly. Please contact me at the school if you have any concerns regarding NAPLAN.

Wellbeing at NPS

Welcome Alex - Wellbeing Leader

Hello everyone!

I am so excited to be joining Nuriootpa Primary School as your new Wellbeing Leader. My name is Alex Stokoe and I am passionate about creating a supportive and nurturing environment where everyone feels valued, understood and empowered. With a background in school leadership and over 20 years teaching experience, I am here to help promote not just the academic success of our students, but their mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing as well.

In my role as Wellbeing Leader, I’ll be working closely with students, staff, and families to ensure that we have the right support systems in place to promote resilience, self-care, and positive mental health. My aim is to create a school community where each individual feels heard, respected, and supported.

This year I will be working with Ms Fiona Lloyde, Fiona is a wellbeing SSO that will be supporting students at our site 2 days a week. Fiona has an extensive background in wellbeing and has held similar positions in other schools. Fiona has a passion for supporting students and their families and is excited to be hosting a new playgroup on Tuesday mornings in the activity room.

What you may not know, is that my own 3 children attended Nuriootpa Primary school, and my wife Kirsty Stokoe has been teaching at Nuriootpa for many years. I have enjoyed getting to know the students and look forward to meeting parents and families.

Welcome Fiona - Student Wellbeing Officer

Thank you for the warm welcome to Nuriootpa Primary School! I am excited to be working alongside Mr. Stokoe as a Student Wellbeing Officer.

I have a deep passion for working in a school environment and find great joy in seeing students flourish. Creating a space where children feel valued, supported, and empowered is at the heart of what I do, and I look forward to being a part of this wonderful school community.

I call the Barossa Valley home, and in my spare time, I love cooking, gardening, and spending time at the beach. Travel is always on my bucket list, and I have a special fondness for elephants! I am also a proud mum to my two grown-up children, India and Lewis.

I look forward to getting to know more students, families, and staff throughout the year and being part of the supportive and caring environment at Nuriootpa Primary School.

Kind regards, Fiona

Volunteer at NPS

Parent Volunteers

If you are able, Nuriootpa Primary welcomes any parents and carers who would like  to volunteer.  Parent and Carer Volunteers are a valued support base for our school, assisting staff to provide  a range of high quality opportunities to promote the learning, wellbeing and growth of students.

Some ways you can be involved may include:

·       Listen to Students read

·       Assistance on excursions and Camps

·       Helping out at School Events (eg Christmas Concert, Sports day and SAPSASA)

If you are interested in supporting the school in either of these,  please contact the Front Office and speak to Karen Brook on 8562 1040 to book in for an information night to be held early next term.

Please note: All volunteers need  a  WWCC (Working with Children Check) and RHAN (Responding to Harm and Neglect).  The School will support interested people in gaining these.
