Crafers Primary School

Newsletter 9 August 2024

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Our Friday line up for the term is beginning with gusto next week. We are very much looking forward to celebrating Indonesian Independence Day and Book Week. The very special thing about these occasions is the children have the opportunity to dress in recognition of something other than Crafers Primary School. Next Friday, we are asking the children and staff to dress in red and white and the following Friday to come dressed as a favourite book character. I know this will unleash the creative amongst us!

In doing this, however, it is important to remember the children will still be participating in a full day of school events which means costumes must be flexible enough to accommodate learning, play, workshops and movement and of course, warmth. Alternatively, they need to be removable so the children can do all of these things after showcasing their creations. To honour Book Week, it would be great to see the children come as book characters. In the past, on occasion, we have had some costumes of a scarier nature. I am asking that these be kept for a weekend especially any frightening masks as we have a community ranging from 4 -12 years of age. Additionally, I am sure we will have the company of even younger children and this year, the company of grandparents and special friends - we certainly wouldn't want to frighten them!

I do hope there is a plentiful supply of needles, cottons, super glue and patience. I wish you the best of luck in bringing a loved character to life for our Parade on Friday of Week 5.

Kind regards

Chan

Indonesian Independence Day Celebrations

We are all looking forward to the 79th year celebration of Indonesian Independence Day on Friday, 16 August (1945 – 2024) with staff and students encouraged to wear ‘merah dan putih’ (red and white).

Students will have opportunities to immerse themselves in language and culture by playing in a traditional bamboo orchestra called ‘Angklung’, with ‘kendang’ (hand drums). They’ll also perform popular dances from different regions of Indonesia and try Indonesia’s little-known, national martial art, ‘Pencak Silat’. The performances and workshops are delivered by three of the most experienced artists from Adelaide’s Indonesian community: Pak Ferry and Bu Yenny from Adelindo Angklung SA, Kang Dodi Darmadi, and Mbak Dewi Lestari (see their profiles below).

Students will also compete for their house teams in popular Independence Day games such as ‘Lomba Makan Krupuk’ (cracker eating race), ‘Lomba Sedotan dalam Botol’ (put the straw in the bottle!) and older kids will race on wooden skis in the ‘Lomba’. And everyone will have the chance to enjoy some delicious Indonesian food at recess and lunch time!

On behalf of staff, I would like to massively thank our principal, Chan, for her generous funding, support and enthusiasm in making this special event happens and raise the profile of our Indonesian LOTE program this year. I also would like to thank my colleagues for their endless support and energy with the program so far - Lyndal, Pam, Mark and the admin/front office team, to name but a few.

From my first day at Crafers PS, I have been treated so warmly by everyone. Indeed, Crafers is a very special place to work, learn and connect. I am hugely grateful for the opportunity to stage this event and will cherish this special moment in my teaching career.

Terima kasih! Merdeka!

Introducing: Dewi Lestari - Indonesian Traditional Dancer

My name is Dewi Lestari Mulyana. I am an Indonesian traditional dancer.  Indonesia is divided into 34 provinces. I was born in a town on Java Island called Subang in western Indonesia.

Dancing has always been a significant part of my life. I come from a family of artists, and my passion for traditional art has been with me since birth. My dancing skills have developed since I attended a high school for the arts and continued studying at an arts college (STSI) in Bandung, West Java. My most significant achievement was winning first place in the Student Arts Competition throughout Indonesia, held in Jakarta in 2006. The dance I presented was related to Bajidoran, from West Java. I created this performance with the accompaniment of traditional music from my older brother's creation.

My dancing soul is permanently attached even though I moved to Adelaide, far from my traditional arts family environment. I have gained extensive experience in Australia performing dances at various events, such as festivals, weddings, parties, and workshops. I work in early childhood care and am proud to continue introducing and maintaining Indonesian traditional arts.

I'm thrilled about the opportunity to share the rich traditional dance heritage with the students at Crafers Primary School! I can't wait to showcase the vibrant and dynamic "Nusantara Dance," which has roots in different regions of Indonesia and is characterised by its unique movements, music, rhythm, and dance patterns. The performance will be enhanced by a fantastic music soundtrack composed by my talented older brother! (EGA er ethnic percussion).

See you all soon

Kind regards,

DEWI

Room 7 Diorama Habitats

Room 7 have made amazing creations in Design and Technology last term.

Each student selected their own animal to research. They then constructed a dioramas to show the habitat they lived in. We used plasticine to create the animal we researched. Each one is very unique.

Please come in and see them before we take them home.

Room 1 Line Art

Back in Time in Room 2

The students of room 2 are investigating the theme of History this term. We have looked at how students themselves have change since they were babies. Now we are investigating artefacts from bygone eras and wondering what they were used for.
