PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS

Messages from Mr Dill

Education Week 2023

Next week we will celebrate Education Week under the theme 'Learning, Celebrating, Embracing 175 years of Public Education in NSW'.

It is our pleasure to showcase the learning of our students, particularly on Tuesday's Open Day and we invite you to join us.

Please see the Education Week program attached below.

Staying Safe on Open Day

To keep students, staff, parents and grandriends safe at our open days, we ask for your help with the following:

  • Please stay at home if you are not well - the flu season has arrived!
  • Undertake a rapid antigen test (RAT) prior to coming to the school
  • Keep to the maximum number of 10-12 adults in classrooms
  • Use Check-in QR codes located around the school

'Kiss and Drop' Zone

We are fortunate to have a no parking zone near the Thompson Street gate. Kiss and drop zones are designed for your convenience and for  your child's safety. Designed for quick entry and exit, these zones minimise congestion and risk when used properly by all parents and carers.

These zones allow you to stop and drop off or pick up children for a maximum of 2 minutes. You're required to remain in, or within 3 metres of, your vehicle. As a courtesy to all parents, please use this zone in keeping with the conditions above.

FROM THE DEPUTY'S DESK

Class of the week - Class 5/6H

In PDHPE, class 5/6H has been investigating the many benefits of exercise on our health and wellbeing. Students have created split pin figures in various poses to depict their favourite sports. Scrap paper was used to dress the figures in appropriate clothing.

Class 5/6H Sporting Poses

Head Lice

In recent weeks there have been cases of head lice at the school. We ask that all parents/caregivers check their child’s hair and treat referencing the information below.

  • Check your child’s head for lice behind the ears and forehead once a week in cooler weather.
  • Check particularly carefully in the week before school starts each term.
  • If you do find lice, ask the chemist for the correct shampoo to use. Please treat any other children in the family as well, just as a precaution. Bed linen, pillows, hairbrushes, cushions etc., will also need to be washed thoroughly and aired in the sun. Do not forget to also treat school hats!
  • Once your child’s hair has been treated correctly, the lice will be dead and the lice and eggs can be removed with a fine-toothed comb available from the chemist.
  • After initial treatment of hair is completed, it needs to be redone 10 days later.
  • Please ensure that girls with hair past their shoulders keep it tied back at all times.

If everyone can please check their child’s hair, we can help eradicate this very annoying problem from our school.

COVID SAFETY UPDATES

RAT kits are available from the school office

RAT kits are available from the school office for all families.

For continued testing, please call or visit the office to arrange collection.

COVID-smart measures in schools

Our layered COVID-smart measures – staying home if unwell, hygiene and cleaning practices, testing for COVID-19, masks strongly encouraged and ventilation – will continue this term. More details on our Advice for families page.

NSW Health advise that during the winter months, COVID will continue to present a health risk to the community. Accordingly, schools will implement baseline COVID-smart measures to help reduce the risk of transmission for students and staff members. These key COVID-smart measures include:

  • staying home and getting tested if unwell, and only attending school when symptom free.

  • rapid antigen testing for symptomatic students and staff. Please contact us for test kits.

Staying home when sick

With flu cases on the rise, we would like to remind families that simple hygiene such as regularly washing hands will help stop the spread of the potentially deadly virus.

Students are asked to stay home when sick. They should only attend school when they are symptom free.

Parents and carers who have children with persistent or ongoing symptoms of flu or COVID 19 are encouraged to have these assessed by their local health care professional. These symptoms may be related to other illnesses (e.g. allergies or hay fever) that require treatment and management by a doctor.

HELPING YOUR CHILD WITH THE NEW CURRICULUM

Number Talks Focus K-6: Stage 2 Feature

This term, our staff will continue to focus their professional learning on ‘number talks’ as they bring this routine into classrooms during mathematics lessons. At Drummoyne PS, we are committed to using ‘number talks’ for 3 different purposes:

  • To frontload (anticipate) learning to come in future teaching units

  • To target (target teaching in currently teaching unit

  • To backfill (to plug the gaps of learning from prior teaching units)

There are a variety of ‘number talk’ routines teachers can choose to engage with during this component of a mathematics lesson.

Teachers in Stage 2 have started using number strings routine. Number strings involve a series of strong related number problems that support the development of a targeted mental computation strategy to develop understanding of properties of operations. Problems are worked through one at a time across a short 10-15 minute routine.

1. They start with an entry level problem that is low-threshold.

2. and 3. Subsequent problems are helper problems, that are purposefully sequenced to build mathematical thinking required to then solve the final clunker problem.

4. Teachers facilitate discussions after each problem to foster reasoning, reflection and development of key mathematical strategies based on number relationships.

Here are some classes in Stage 2 participating in ‘number talks’ this week.

Class 3/4S has also tried a ‘What patterns do you see?’ ‘number talk’ routine.

GENERAL NEWS

Tap on and tap off, every time you travel by bus

Our school is partnering with the local school bus operator, Busways, to support a new Tap On and Tap Off education campaign encouraging students who travel by bus to correctly use their school Opal cards. Busways is implementing this campaign throughout Term 3, 2023. This campaign will focus on a simple message – tap on and tap off every time you travel by bus.

Why is tapping on and off on the bus important?

The use of Opal cards is the primary way bus operators and Transport for NSW analyse demand for bus services. When students don’t use their Opal cards, their trip is not recorded. Therefore, buses may appear underutilised. Tapping on and off provides better data to plan better bus services. How can you help? If your child travels to school by bus, please ensure your child has a valid Opal card (either a School or Child/Youth Opal card).

Visit Transport for NSW website to apply for a school Opal card. Students may see onboard bus posters and Busways Community Relation Officers at afternoon loadings. Together let’s get students into good habits of tapping on and tapping off with their Opal card.

Thank you for your support with this campaign.
