PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS

Messages from Mr Dill

Sincere Thanks

I would like to thank every member of our parent community for your faithful support of the school throughout the term. On your behalf, I would like to sincerely thank our staff for their wholehearted efforts to bring through learning and support for every student in our care and to wish you and all staff a well-deserved break if work commitments allow.

Semester 1 Reports

Parents and carers should have received Semester 1 reports on Wednesday this week. If you did not receive your child's report please email the school.

SRC Mufti Day

Thank you to everyone who turned up on Wednesday in their colourful PJ's and lounge wear. The SRC raised $650 in total which will be donated to Stewart House to help fund the great work done for children in need.

Open Day - Tuesday 1st August

Our open day will be held on Tuesday 1 August. An overview of the day follows:

  • 9.45am Parent Assembly with items by many K-6 students eg stage 1 choir, public speaking, poetry recital, DIM senior band, performing arts items etc
  • 10.30am Open Classrooms
  • 10.30am Book Fair
  • 11.30pm Teddy Bears Picnic for Kindergarten & lunch with parents and grand friends
  • 12.15pm Normal lessons resume

An overview of all our Education Week activities will be provided next term.

Student Work During Extended Leave

From time to time, requests are made to class teachers to provide classwork for students when the students are taking an extended holiday during term.  While teachers are wanting to support students to continue their learning when away from school, providing worksheets and the like for children to complete has limited value for learning and generally will not be provided.  Completion of worksheets is helpful for students when it is based on the teaching and learning in class including the questions, interactions and feedback between the teacher and the students. Our best suggestion for children who are going on extended leave is to keep a diary, written or drawn, and then share this with their class when they return to school.

FROM THE DEPUTY'S DESK

NAIDOC Week

National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year (Sunday to Sunday), to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth. The theme for this year's NAIDOC Week is 'For our Elders'.

Please support and get to know your local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities through activities and events held across the country next week.

Deputy Principal

Class of the Week - Stage 3 Thinking Keys Projects

Over the last five weeks, students in Stage 3 have been working on their thinking keys projects, researching topics that interested them based around the themes of Government, democracy and human rights. This week they showcased their thinking keys projects to their fellow students and shared their knowledge.

Head Lice

In recent weeks there have been a few cases of head lice throughout the school. We ask that all parents/caregivers check their child’s hair and treat during the school holidays.

Below is a summary of helpful useful information:

  • Check your child’s head for lice behind the ears and forehead once a week in cooler weather.
  • Check particularly carefully in the week before school starts each term.
  • If you do find lice, ask the chemist for the correct shampoo to use. Please treat any other children in the family as well, just as a precaution. Bed linen, pillows, hairbrushes, cushions etc., will also need to be washed thoroughly and aired in the sun. Do not forget to also treat school hats!
  • Once your child’s hair has been treated correctly, the lice will be dead and the lice and eggs can be removed with a fine-toothed comb available from the chemist.
  • After initial treatment of hair is completed, it needs to be redone 10 days later.
  • Please ensure that girls with hair past their shoulders keep it tied back at all times.

If everyone can please check their child’s hair, we can help eradicate this very annoying problem from our school.

COVID SAFETY UPDATES

RAT kits are available from the school office

RAT kits are available from the school office for all families.

For continued testing, please call or visit the office to arrange collection.

COVID-smart measures in schools

Our layered COVID-smart measures – staying home if unwell, hygiene and cleaning practices, testing for COVID-19, masks strongly encouraged and ventilation – will continue this term. More details on our Advice for families page.

NSW Health advise that during the winter months, COVID will continue to present a health risk to the community. Accordingly, schools will implement baseline COVID-smart measures to help reduce the risk of transmission for students and staff members. These key COVID-smart measures include:

  • staying home and getting tested if unwell, and only attending school when symptom free.

  • rapid antigen testing for symptomatic students and staff. Please contact us for test kits.

Staying home when sick

With flu cases on the rise, we would like to remind you that simple hygiene such as regularly washing hands will help stop the spread of the potentially deadly virus.

Students are asked to stay home when sick. They should only attend school when they are symptom free.

Parents and carers who have children with persistent or ongoing symptoms of flu or COVID 19 are encouraged to have these assessed by their local health care professional. These symptoms may be related to other illnesses (e.g. allergies or hay fever) that require treatment and management by a doctor.

GENERAL NEWS

Parliament and Civics Education Rebate

Our Year 6 students at Drummoyne PS have recently undertaken an educational tour of the national capital. As part of their study, students participated in many educational programs with a focus on Australia's history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) program is an Australian Government initiative that provides financial assistance to support students’ on-site learning about national democratic, historical and cultural institutions in Canberra.By visiting select locations in Canberra, DPS qualified for the $30 rebate which is allocated on a per student basis. Once approved, the $30 rebate will be paid directly to the school and will be held in trust as a contribution towards the cost of end of year activities for our Year 6 students.

Year 6 Overnight Excursion to Canberra

Last week, Ms Pegler, Ms O’Dowd, Ms Page, Mr Neufeld and myself had the pleasure of accompanying year 6 students on a three-day excursion to Canberra. Despite the coldest Canberra morning in recent history: -6*C!, we had a fantastic time exploring places and sites that supported the stage 3 history unit, ‘Australia as a Nation’. Students were outstanding role models for their school and from all reports, enjoyed the excursion immensely. Thank you to all staff involved in the organisation of the excursion, not forgetting the hard work behind the scenes by our fabulous office staff.

Student recounts

Parliament House was just amazing! We went to the House of Representatives where we watched a live debate between the Prime Minister and Opposition. Let me tell you, there was lots of drama! It was exciting to see Anthony Albanese in real life. Next, we visited the Senate. We were able to watch a motion - which is like a vote. What a great experience! Later, after visiting the chambers, we got to act out our own debate, which was based on having air conditioning in classrooms, or making water tanks compulsory. This was a lot of fun and very dramatic, as people really got into parliamentary character!

We saw portraits of our past prime ministers in the hallways and admired the amazing architecture and design of the building. A highlight for many of us was meeting our local MP, Sally Sitou.

Have you heard of the Arboretum? It’s an amazing place where unique trees and plants are nurtured and preserved. I guess you could call it a zoo for trees! As we entered the Arboretum, we were drawn to the variety of plant life around us. We stood upon a range of hills that made us feel like we were on top of the world.

Our guide had planned a fun scavenger hunt that allowed us to run around and explore the area. While one group was orienteering, the other group had access to a fun playground that had lots of climbing ropes and a huge slide. Mrs McCauley almost had a heart attack when she saw how high we were swinging on the swings!

By Max & Micah

The War Memorial was a solemn place full of historical artefacts. We saw the wall of poppies that commemorate fallen soldiers and other war personnel such as nurses. A moving experience was visiting the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a huge space set aside to remember all soldiers, but especially those who remain unidentified.

By Daisy & Sophie

The CSIRO was an amazing experience! We learnt about some Australian scientific inventions and explored the learning spaces in groups. Did you know that wifi was invented in Australia? We were given questions that had answers hidden in the exhibits and in teams we raced to find as many answers as we could. The CSIRO was a great place to learn and have fun at the same time. We even got to look through microscopes to see things up close.

We couldn’t have made it through freezing Canberra without our fabulous bus drivers. Bus 1’s driver, Grant, had an amazing collection of ‘dad jokes’, songs, and PS - he loves Tay-Tay as much as we do!!

All the information he gave us as we drove around Canberra was useful and entertaining. On Bus 1, we got to play games and watch movies, but the highlight was the music playlist, where people really let their true colours shine!

We had the best three days we could have asked for. Thanks, drivers!

Of course, it’s not a school camp without stops at playgrounds! We stopped at Berrima on the way there and back but the best playground was one we visited in Canberra where the toilets actually sang to you! They were those new modern-style toilets that play music and shut the door automatically. Some people found them more entertaining than the playground equipment!

The playground in Berrima had frost on the ground on the first day. Some of us even tried to make small snowballs, but it didn’t work. We had fun climbing a fort and cramming as many people as we could on the mini trampolines. The flying fox was awesome.

Tap on and tap off, every time you travel by bus

Our school is partnering with the local school bus operator, Busways, to support a new Tap On and Tap Off education campaign encouraging students who travel by bus to correctly use their school Opal cards. Busways is implementing this campaign throughout Term 3, 2023. This campaign will focus on a simple message – tap on and tap off every time you travel by bus.

Why is tapping on and off on the bus important?

The use of Opal cards is the primary way bus operators and Transport for NSW analyse demand for bus services. When students don’t use their Opal cards, their trip is not recorded. Therefore, buses may appear underutilised. Tapping on and off provides better data to plan better bus services. How can you help? If your child travels to school by bus, please ensure your child has a valid Opal card (either a School or Child/Youth Opal card).

Visit Transport for NSW website to apply for a school Opal card. Students may see onboard bus posters and Busways Community Relation Officers at afternoon loadings. Together let’s get students into good habits of tapping on and tapping off with their Opal card.

Thank you for your support with this campaign.

Backflips Against Bullying incursion

On Tuesday the students (and teachers) across all year groups had a great time watching the 'Backflips Against Bullying Program’ about what you should and shouldn’t do if you ever get bullied.

The engaging program taught us how to react towards a ‘bully’, and what we need to do if we become the victim of a ‘bully’. The instructors, Declan and Eloise, made the experience entertaining by showing us cool tricks, flips, handstands and gymnastics. They also made it quite amusing by including some humorous scenes and jokes.

We had the opportunity to interview students who attended the show. Some quotes follow:

“It was a really entertaining show. I loved the humor and  tricks they did .”

Jack Year 6

“ They were really talented at acrobatics and also made the lesson clear and fun to follow.”  Liam Year 6

“The tricks and flips were amazing and that they were able to do both learning and tricks at the same time.”
