Principal's Report

Hello!

Dear JPS Families,

It has been a whirlwind first week for me, meeting so many staff, students and families and being shown the Jamberoo ropes. I feel incredibly grateful to have been entrusted with the privilege of serving as Jamberoo Public School's new principal - it is not a position I take lightly.

I have already felt so warmly welcomed by the students and families of JPS, and was delighted to receive welcome cards from some very thoughtful students upon my arrival! I'm looking forward to getting to know you all over the coming weeks so please come and say hello when you see me around the grounds, or contact the school if you'd like to arrange a time to chat. The stronger the partnership between our families and our staff, the better we can support our students.

I'd also like to thank the Jamberoo staff for welcoming me so enthusiastically, patiently answering all of my questions, and for being very forgiving when I have occasionally gotten their names wrong. I can already tell that this welcoming and inclusive culture is something that is highly valued among both staff and students.

I am very much looking forward to what I am sure will be a great term at JPS!

Kind Regards,

Bec Gavin

Principal

Jamberoo ANZAC Day Service

On Saturday, 18 April, students proudly represented the school at the Jamberoo Community ANZAC Day Service. Arriving at 10:00am, our leaders prepared for their important roles as flag bearers and parade leaders. The leaders demonstrated great respect and responsibility as they took their place at the front of the procession, walking behind the horses and helping lead the parade through the town.

The service was led by Terry Stamp, with Mongo also sharing powerful stories from wartime, helping those in attendance reflect on the experiences and sacrifices of servicemen and women.

A wreath of purple and red flowers was laid by JPS in honour of veterans and animals, reminding us of the sacrifices made to give us the future we enjoy today.

Each of our Year 6 leaders contributed to the service by reading a poem, speaking clearly and respectfully. A special thank you to Zac, who stepped in to read a prayer.

All students did an outstanding job, showing maturity and pride throughout the ceremony. We are incredibly proud of the way they represented our school on this important occasion.

In connection with ANZAC Day, the library has purchased some new books including, The Purple Poppy, which explores the important role animals have played in war.

ANZAC Assembly

On Thursday our school leaders proudly hosted the annual ANZAC assembly. We welcomed special guests Terry Stamp and Michael Soutter to observe this important event with us. Students listened attentively and respectively as Michael Soutter told us about Jamberoo's significant history of service before our guests and some students laid flowers as a sign of respect. Thank you to Mrs Dammeral for organising this event, and particularly for her beautiful decorations.

Class Spotlight

Bimbala

Bimbala have hit the ground running to start Term 2. We started the week by writing about our school holidays, focusing on using past tense verbs to explain what we got up to. Students were excited to share their adventures, and it was wonderful hearing all the stories from their break.

Our new history unit has also taken off. Year 1 have been exploring the past, present and future, and we have had a lot of fun acting as time travellers. We journeyed back to the age of dinosaurs, explored the Egyptian pyramids, and imagined what the future might look like. Along the way, we practised identifying the language used to describe different time periods.

Students also drew and wrote about something they did in the past, something they do now, and something they hope to do in the future. Their future aspirations were a highlight, with dreams ranging from becoming firefighters to learning to surf, driving a car, and even growing taller.

It is wonderful to be back and we are looking forward to a fantastic Term 2 ahead.

Walabi

Welcome back to Term 2, Walabi class!

Students were excited this week to begin our new English unit based around the book, Great White Shark. In this unit we will be looking a this hybrid text. 'Hybrid' in this context means it's a text with features of both informative and imaginative texts.

In maths, we are beginning a unit on measurement with a pirate theme! Students have been thinking about the different types of measurement and considering what tools can be used to do that measuring.

The class were very excited on Wednesday to begin our touch typing program, Typing Tournament. This involved them logging in to the laptops and then logging in to the Typing Tournament program, then doing a 'speed test,' then they were able to play a game to practise learning the position of the keys on the keyboard. I appreciated students' resilience with this as it was a long process with 23 students. Hopefully, next time, the process will be a little bit faster. Students will be expected to place their eight fingers on the 'home keys' and try to use the correct fingers for each key. The focus in the beginning is only on the home row.

Looking forward to a positive, fun, learning-filled term! Please see the separate email I sent to you, Walabi parents and carers, about homework this term.
