Message from the Principal

Dear Parents and carers,

Appreciation to the Board

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to our Board members for their productive meeting held this week. Their continued commitment, thoughtful governance, and strategic guidance play an essential role in supporting the ongoing development and success of Lae International School. We are grateful for their dedication to ensuring the best possible outcomes for our students and staff.

Upcoming Educational Trip – Cairns

Next week, we are excited to see Group A students from Year 9 depart for their educational trip to Cairns. This carefully planned experience offers valuable opportunities for learning beyond the classroom. Highlights of the itinerary include visits to the Cairns Aquarium, Fitzroy Island, and the Kuranda Koala Sanctuary. Students will also engage in civic learning through a visit to the Cairns Council Chambers and a meeting with Mayor Amy. We wish all participants a safe and enriching journey.

LIS’s Got Talent – Week 7

Preparations are well underway for LIS’s Got Talent, scheduled for Thursday, 28th May (Week 7). Our shortlisted students have been working diligently to refine their performances, and we look forward to showcasing their diverse talents. This event promises to be a vibrant celebration of creativity and student achievement within our school community.

Assessment and Reporting

As we move through the term, assessments are now in full swing as students and teachers prepare for end-of-semester reports. This is an important period for consolidating learning and demonstrating progress. We encourage students to remain focused, organised, and proactive in seeking support where necessary.

Communication and Support

Should you have any concerns regarding your child’s progress or wellbeing, we encourage you to make an appointment to speak with the class teacher, Head of Campus (HOC), or myself. Open communication between home and school is vital in ensuring the best outcomes for our students.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership.

Success Starts Here!

Deputy Principal's Notices

Week 5 has been an exciting and productive time across both our Primary and Secondary Colleges, showcasing the vibrancy of our learning community and the dedication of our staff and students.

Celebrating Literacy – Book Week Success

Our Primary Book Week, themed ‘Symphony of Stories’, has been a tremendous success. Throughout the week, our students immersed themselves in the joy of reading, creativity, and storytelling. It was truly inspiring to witness the enthusiasm with which our learners embraced the theme, celebrating their love of literacy in so many imaginative ways.

A particular highlight was the Book Week Parade held today, where students proudly showcased their costumes and favourite characters. Events like these not only build excitement around reading but also strengthen confidence, creativity, and a lifelong appreciation for books. We thank our Primary staff for their hard work in orchestrating such a vibrant and engaging celebration.

Assessment and Data-Informed Learning

This week has also been significant from an academic perspective, with National Mock Examinations and PAT (Progressive Achievement Tests) taking place across both Primary and Secondary.

These assessments are an important part of our teaching and learning cycle. They provide us with valuable data that offers a snapshot of our students’ progress at both national and international levels. This information allows us to:

  • Reflect on the effectiveness of our teaching and learning programs
  • Identify strengths and areas for growth
  • Set clear, targeted goals for our students
  • Tailor instruction to better meet individual learning needs

Through careful analysis, we can ensure our programs remain responsive and aligned with best practice, ultimately supporting every student to achieve their personal best.

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to our dedicated staff for their professionalism in organising these assessments, as well as their ongoing commitment to analysing the results and planning meaningful next steps. It is through this consistent effort that we uphold our commitment that Success Starts Here at Lae International School.

Year 9 International Excursion – Cairns, Australia

We are also excited as a group of our Year 9 students prepare to depart next week for their international excursion to Cairns, Australia.

Excursions such as these play a vital role in student development. They provide opportunities for:

  • Experiential, real-world learning beyond the classroom
  • Development of independence, resilience, and confidence
  • Exposure to new environments, cultures, and perspectives
  • Strengthening of peer relationships and teamwork skills

These experiences enrich our students academically, socially, and emotionally, helping to develop well-rounded global citizens.

A special thank you must go to the many staff working behind the scenes who have dedicated significant time and effort to organising this trip. Their attention to detail ensures that the experience will be both educational and enjoyable for all involved.

As always, we appreciate the continued support of our school community. It has been a fulfilling week, and we look forward to the opportunities and achievements that lie ahead.

Warm regards,

Mr Stephen Sowter

Head of Primary Campus Notices

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

As part of Lae International School’s ongoing commitment to student and staff safety, we will be conducting a lockdown drill on Monday, 18 May during the school day.

Lockdown procedures are an important part of our school’s emergency preparedness and are practiced ensuring that students and staff know how to respond calmly and safely in the unlikely event of a serious threat in or near the school. These drills help us to:

  • Test and improve our safety procedures
  • Ensure clear communication and supervision
  • Build staff and student confidence in emergency response routines

This will be a planned drill only, and students will be supported by their teachers throughout the process. The exercise will be conducted in a calm and age-appropriate manner, with no cause for alarm.

We appreciate your understanding and support as we work to maintain a safe and secure school environment for all.

Should you have any questions, please contact the school office.

Kind regards,
