Crafers Primary School

Newsletter 30 August 2024

From the Principal

Towards the end of Term 2 and as we entered Term 3, out Student Leaders worked on a project to create a Buddy Bench. This was put forward as a proposal by the Student Leaders and pitched with thoughtfulness and compassion. The purpose was to create a space within the playground where students could go if they were feeling a little lost or lonely. Our Student Leaders collaborated with a number of adults including Hannah who guided the making and decorating and Amy who has trained our senior students in ways to respond, and created a roster of students. Students supporting the buddy bench project can be found nearby in buddy vests ready to help if needed. Additionally, our Student Leaders addressed all of our students at different Assemblies to share the progress of the project and how to use the Buddy Bench. The Buddy Bench seen below is now located on the edges of the Courts parallel to Piccadilly Road. It was excellent to see the commitment of our Student Leaders and  very satisfying to see the project in its fullness. What a great example of initiative, commitment and kindness this was.

I cannot complete this newsletter without a 'shout out' to our Community. There is no doubt in my mind why this is the number one value here at Crafers. Over the past weeks, we have had a number of events: Book Week, Grandparents Day, Fathers Day Breakfast, Magic Millions, Tag Rugby and Orienteering. These were all made possible through generosity, dedication and a willingness to be involved. It was with great delight that I took on the persona of 'tea lady' at this morning's breakfast as I was able to stand back (most guests were clearly coffee drinkers) and observe all of the pieces and people working together in what has become very much a Crafers way of doing things. My gratitude goes to all involved; it's difficult to summarise so much success and joy, I can say it makes me feel very lucky to be a part of this Crafers community!

Kind regards
Chan

Room 4 News

Well, what an exciting and busy term it has been so far. The class recently had an incursion from Nature Play SA, where the children worked in pairs using a geocaching machine,  to find hidden bags around the school. In the bags were activities based on the bookweek books. There were 15 bags hidden and the children needed to use their knowledge of the compass points to follow directions.  It was a great mixture of orienteering and exploring and the class had a lot of fun. See the pictures attached.

Of course, we also had book week and grandparents day, which was a lovely morning of characters, connections, community and sharing of things in our classroom with friends and relatives. The children were very proud to share their work and their school.

In class, there have been investigations, information collecting, artwork and persuasive texts based around the topic of trees. Our class is full of colourful and interesting pieces of work, please pop in and have a look.

We are off to Arbury Park in week 8 for a day of environmental science and team building skills, which should also be great.

Year 4 Mini Maths Olympics: A Creative Success!

Our Year 4 students recently showcased their creativity in the Mini Maths Olympics! Inspired by the 2024 Olympics, they worked in pairs to design exciting games like basketball, javelin, and even parachutes using everyday household items. This STEM design challenge not only sparked imagination but also honed their problem-solving skills. The highlight was playing these innovative games with their Year 2 buddies. Both year groups had a blast exchanging their games and testing their skills. Well done to all participants for their fantastic effort and teamwork! Keep up the great work and keep the Olympic spirit alive!

Geocaching Adventure with Nature SA

Our Year 4 students recently embarked on an exciting geocaching adventure, thanks to a fantastic incursion by Nature SA. The students were introduced to the world of geocaching, a real-world treasure hunt using GPS coordinates. Working in teams, they searched the school grounds, following clues and solving puzzles to find hidden ‘caches’. The activity encouraged teamwork, critical thinking, and a love for the outdoors. It was a thrilling experience, blending technology with nature exploration. A huge thank you to Nature SA for bringing this fun and educational experience to our school!

Tag Rugby

On Wednesday 28 August students from Years 4, 5 and 6 competed in the NRL Tag Rugby Carnival held at St Francis de Sales in Mt Barker. Congratulations to the girls team which won every game and took home the Yr4-6 Adelaide Hills League Girls Overall Award, whilst the boys won the Respect Award.

Thanks to Simon and Dean for coaching on the day.

Here's hoping we get to West Beach in Term 4!

SA Schools Relay Championships 2024

Crafers Primary School Orienteering team took part in the SA Schools Relay Championships 2024 held at Lochiel Park, Campbelltown.

Competitors navigated individually, following their designated maps before passing the baton to their relay partner who had their turn in the parklands. Although CPS didn't secure a top-three position, our team displayed remarkable support and encouragement towards each other and other participating schools.

A big thank you to Katie for arranging the pre-event training sessions, Heathfield High School for sharing their bus, and Zita from Orienteering SA for coordinating the event.
