Nhulunbuy Primary School Newsletter

TERM 3 - Week 9 - 2025

Principal Note

Nhamirri Walal,

As we draw Term 3 to a close, I want to take a moment to celebrate the fantastic 10 weeks we’ve shared at Nhulunbuy Primary School. From learning milestones to special events, it has been a term full of engagement, achievement, and amazing community spirit.

We’ve had so many wonderful experiences, including:

  • Transition – 100 Days of School celebrations
  • NAIDOC Week events highlighting culture and community
  • Year 6 transition to High School program
  • Preschool transition to Primary School program
  • Science Week hands-on learning experiences and display
  • National Anti-Bullying Week
  • Book Week and Character Dress Up Day
  • Preschool Working Bee
  • Camps for Year 5 and Year 6, and the Year 3 & 4 Sleep Over
  • Father’s Day Stall and Breakfast
  • Transition Emergency Services Incursion
  • Year 1 and 2 Emergency Services Excursion
  • Tournament of Minds
  • Teacher Aide Appreciation Week
  • Transition Disco

A huge congratulations to our Tournament of Minds team who won the Northern Territory STEM category last fortnight! The team dedicated their time during Friday electives and additional training sessions to prepare, and they were very excited to learn they had won. A special thank you to Ms Bridie, who leads the team and generously volunteers her time to support their preparation. Well done to everyone involved!

Our School Council has also been incredible this year, generously hosting stalls for our mums and dads and running a significant fundraiser on Cracker Night, along with staff and family volunteers—thank you for your dedication and ongoing support!

On Wednesday afternoon, we held our RU OK Colour Fun Run, an event sponsored by Nhulunbuy Corporation and supported by Nhulunbuy Fire Station. It’s always a highlight for students and a fantastic way to celebrate wellbeing, energy, and community spirit. My sincere thanks to Mike and the team at Nhulunbuy Corporation for sponsoring this day in collaboration with Balanced Choice.

A big shout out also to Ross and the crew at Nhulunbuy Fire Station for hosting our excursions, visiting for incursions, providing feedback on our Fire Evacuation Drills, and spraying us all with water at the Colour Fun Run so the colour sticks!

On Thursday, our Year 1 and 2 classes enjoyed a special ‘Sleep In’ day. Over 100 students arrived at school in their pyjamas, leaving the other classes wondering if they had missed a dress up day memo! A huge thank you to the staff in this team for creating such a fun and memorable experience for our students.

Events like these are not possible without the energy, dedication, and support of our staff, families, and students. Thank you to everyone who contributed to making these experiences memorable for our school community.

Goldie spending is on the rise! One of the highlights has been hanging out with Mr Tony! There’s always a line of students eagerly saving up for their turn to don the high-vis and get a few jobs done—who wouldn’t want to hang out with Mr Tony? We’ve recently reviewed the Goldie Menu with students and our SWPB team. While we’ve kept all the favourites, we’ve also added some exciting new ideas. And don’t worry—the high-vis and donuts are staying!

A reminder that we still have one more week of Parent-Teacher Interviews. If you haven’t already had the opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher, I encourage you to make an appointment. These meetings are an important way to celebrate your child’s achievements and discuss their learning and social and emotional goals.

I have included a copy of our Conflict-of-Interest Policy for family awareness. Living in a small town has many benefits, but it can also bring unique challenges. Many of our staff have family members attending the school, so these procedures are important for managing potential conflicts. At NPS, every staff member completes this process each year, which is also submitted to the Chief Executive for review and endorsement. This process helps ensure transparency, fairness, and integrity in all school operations. Please take a moment to read the policy, and feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Additionally, I have included our Code of Conduct for parents, visitors, volunteers, and service providers at Nhulunbuy Primary School and the Department’s Family Engagement Charter. It is important that all families are aware of their responsibilities in supporting a safe, respectful, and positive school environment. I ask that families actively support this policy by modelling respectful behaviour, engaging positively with staff and students, and reinforcing these expectations at home. Working together in this way helps ensure our school community remains welcoming, safe, and focused on learning for all students.

Part of my role as principal is responding to constructive feedback about ways we can improve. Continuous improvement is everyone’s work, and we appreciate it and take it seriously. What I receive less often, however, is positive feedback—yet it can be just as powerful. This week, I was delighted to receive an email from a parent who had observed a student demonstrating integrity in the playground. They took the time to identify the student, describe the behaviour, and acknowledge it. Because of their message, I was able to acknowledge the student publicly, share the moment with their family, and link it back to our school values. Well done Frankie for showing integrity and thank you Wanda for taking the time to email!

Everyone benefits from positive feedback, and I encourage you to be brave and generous in sharing it—whether it’s for a student or a staff member. Small acts of gratitude and recognition brighten our school community and make a big difference.

We would also like to wish Tessa Mellington all the best as she goes on maternity leave at the end of this term. We send our warmest wishes to Tessa and Barclay as they step into the next exciting adventure—becoming parents! While we will certainly miss Tessa, we have a very strong transition team who have been busily preparing for this moment. We are pleased to welcome Annalise Broom, who has been recruited to the position to ensure a smooth and seamless transition for our students. We also look forward to welcoming our new Senior Teacher of Special Education, Jessica Westlund, who will be joining us next term.

Thank you again for your ongoing support and partnership. I hope all our students, families, and staff enjoy a well-deserved break and return ready for an exciting Term 4.

Warm wishes,

Rachel Blundell

School Captain Report

It’s been a fun-filled and busy fortnight at NPS!

We began with Indigenous Literacy Day, celebrating the importance of reading, stories, and culture together as a school community.

Our Transition students enjoyed their very own Disco Night, dancing the evening away with lots of smiles and energy!

The Year 6 students headed off on their big adventure camp to Batchelor, where they tackled mountain bike riding, archery, rock climbing, and raft building, as well as a day trip to the stunning Florence Falls. They showed great teamwork, resilience, and courage as they took on each new challenge.

On Monday, we held our Father’s Day Breakfast in the quadrangle. It was wonderful to see so many dads, uncles, and grandads come along to share the morning with us. Thank you to all the parent helpers and local sponsors for making the event a success.

Colour Fun Run was a huge hit! A big thank you to Nhulunbuy Corporation for facilitating this fantastic event in support of RUOK? Day. The colourful celebration brought excitement to the whole school while reminding us of the importance of looking out for one another.

Finally, our Year 1/2 students had a special sleep-in at school, setting up in the library for a cosy day together. They watched a movie in their PJs and finished off with a fun disco, making it a day to remember!

Have a great fortnight,

Dylan Martin and Lane Nash

SRC NEWS

Every fortnight, the SRC gathers to discuss ‘student voice’—sharing ideas, suggestions, questions, and the highlights of NPS students. Recently, some positive topics included the school camps, basketball opening for recess, 1.2 excursion and the Transition disco.

One key suggestion from the student parking lot is riding to school safely and reducing plastic in lunchboxes.

The SRC would like to say a big thank you to all the local sponsors and parent helpers that made our Father’s Day breakfast a success! We are very grateful to have the support from our community sponsors – Woolworths, Sodexo, Gove Boat Club, Gove Golf Club, Gove Tackle World, JEWMA Catering, GIS, Nhulunbuy Regional Sports Fishing Club and Triple M Kebab & Taste of Asia.

A special shout out to Miss Bec from the SRC!

Transition Disco

On Thursday of week 8 Transition got their groove on. We had a disco pizza night. To prepare we transformed TB into a real night club with amazing lighting and loud music. It was such a fun night. We danced to our favourite songs, played party games and ate lots of yummy pizza and ice blocks.

Year 5 Camp

Year 5 Camp Reflection – Latram, Nhulunbuy

Our Year 5 students recently had the incredible opportunity to head out on camp at Latram, near Nhulunbuy. The adventure began with a hike in from the Central Arnhem Road turn-off, and the students did a fantastic job walking in before setting up their tents and settling into camp life.

Throughout the camp, students took part in a range of collaborative challenges that tested their teamwork and problem-solving skills. They also had plenty of fun swimming and playing in the water, with volleyball quickly becoming a crowd favourite.

The evenings were just as memorable as the days. On the first night, students took part in a quiz where they showed off their general knowledge in a fun and competitive way. The second night was filled with entertainment at the camp talent show, which featured everything from songs and puppet shows to riddles and even magic tricks. It was wonderful to see everyone get up and give it a go. A special shoutout goes to Elcie, whose impressive magic tricks earned her group first prize!

After a few busy and fun-filled days, students packed up camp and hiked back out to meet the bus. Although tired, they were full of stories, laughter, and lasting memories from their time away.

This camp would not have been possible without the incredible support of our community. A huge thank you to Mr. Tony for driving our gear out and picking it up again, as well as our amazing parent volunteers—Meg Osborne, Michael Smith, and Paul Augustin—for giving their time and energy to help make this experience so special. A special thanks also to staff member and parent Kelly Martin, who was always ready to step in and support our students and helpers wherever needed.

Our Year 5 camp at Latram was an unforgettable experience that gave students the chance to build resilience, connect with friends, and create memories that will stay with them for years to come.

Year 6 Adventure Camp

Last week, the Year Six legends set off on their adventure to the Batchelor Outdoor Education Centre (BOEC), ready for five days of fun and challenges. The journey began at Darwin Airport, followed by a coach ride to BOEC, where we were split into two teams—Groups 1 & 2 together and Groups 3 & 4 together.

The first day was all about settling in and making ourselves at home. But on day two, the real excitement began!

  • Group 1 tackled mountain biking and explored the magical Florence Falls, where we spotted a water monitor basking on the rocks.
  • Group 2 took on raft building at the local pool (near wild horses!), tested their balance at BOEC’s Wet n’ Wild, and tried their skills at rock climbing.

On day three, the groups swapped activities:

  • Group 1 had a go at archery, raft building, and Wet n’ Wild.
  • Group 2 hit the mountain bike trails and then cooled off at Florence Falls.

Day four brought even more highlights. Group 2 impressed everyone in archery, earning the 2025 Year Six Nhulunbuy team a spot on the Archery Wall of Fame, while Group 1 tested their strength and courage on the rock-climbing walls.

After leaving BOEC, we made a well-earned stop at Maccas for lunch, where the winners of the Cleanest Room Competition enjoyed their prize. Then it was time for more fun—ice skating followed by a trip to King Pin for bowling, arcade games, and an epic laser tag battle. The final night was spent at the Novotel hotel, before waking up bright and early to return home to Nhulunbuy.

A huge thank you goes to Miss Jones and our amazing parent helpers—Willie Callaghan, Renee Geary, Bec Robinson, and Sam Adam—for making this unforgettable adventure possible!

NT School of Sports Track and Field

Five of our Nhulunbuy Primary School students recently had the amazing opportunity to travel to Darwin to compete in the Regional Athletics Carnival. Briee, Oliver, Lincoln, Diaila and Salote joined students from Groote Eylandt, Galiwinku and Milingimbi in proudly representing the East Arnhem region.

Over two days of competition, our students gave their all on the track and field—racing hard, competing strongly, and pushing themselves to achieve their best. Just as importantly, they showed outstanding sportsmanship, encouraging their teammates, congratulating competitors, and upholding the spirit of the event.

The experience was about more than just results; it was also a chance to connect with other students from across the Northern Territory, build resilience through competition, and create memories of representing their community on a bigger stage.

A huge congratulations to Briee, Oliver, Lincoln, Diaila and Salote for the way they represented Nhulunbuy Primary School and the East Arnhem region with pride. We are incredibly proud of their efforts both on and off the track.
