Principal's Message

Welcome to our 2025 school year!

Wow how is it that we are already at the end of week 4. I really do not know where those last 4 weeks went. I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all families who have returned to Newman Primary School this year. For those of you who are new to our school, a very big "Welcome" to each and every one of you. We hope that your child/children have made some wonderful friends already.

It is always so heart-warming to see that the students have settled in extremely well as they adapt to their new class, new friends and a brand-new year. I would like to acknowledge the students and staff for their continued focus on a positive learning environment where all our students are engaged and participating.

We have been extremely lucky to start the 2025 year off fully staffed. We welcome new teaching staff: Mr David Garnsey, Ms Lauren Bennett, Mr John Andrich, Miss Amber Costello, Mrs Rosie Keane and Ms Victoria Vaotuua who has returned to Newman and will be working as an Education Assistant.

On a sad note, I would like to thank Mrs Kristin Connell for all her work at Newman Primary School. Kristin has previously been working at our school as an Education Assistant. The staff and students will miss you.

You may hear us talking at school about Allied Professionals. If you do, this is now the wording that refers to Education Assistants.

Curriculum 2025

Our staff will continue to deliver high quality curriculum to students as we work towards our vision for all students at Newman Primary School.

Newman Primary School fosters resilient learners, embraces diversity and cultivates a collaborative school community for lifelong learning and personal growth.

As detailed in our 2024 - 2026 Business Plan, our focus areas are:

1) Growth for Students

2) Growth for Staff

3) Growth for Community Partnerships

Our detailed operational planning reflects our intention to continue with quality programs such as Talk 4 Writing, Pre-Lit and InitiaLit in our K-2 classes; Spelling Mastery and Seven Steps Of Writing for our Year 3-6 students. PP – Year 6 have now implemented Oxford as our Mathematics program. This year, we have changed our Languages program. It is very exciting that our students from Pre-primary through to Year 6 will all be learning Auslan. We will continue supplementing our health and wellbeing program utilising the Resilience Project. The four key pillars of this program are: Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness and Emotional Literacy. The P&C, together with the school have provided every student with a Resilience Journal. School has purchased all maths and spelling mastery books for each student.

As always, if you need further clarification on classroom information, or would like to find out how your child has settled into their new school year, the classroom teacher is always the first person you should see. Make yourself known to them. Our priority is always your child and in developing a close relationship with our school community where we all work together to provide the best educational opportunities for all children at Newman Primary School. Their dedication to each and every student is nothing short of amazing!

If further clarification is needed or you would like to discuss other areas, please feel free to make an appointment to see me either before, during or after school by ringing our front office.

School Board

I look forward to our first School Board meeting soon; however, would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the work our School Board has completed in 2024 with Mrs Shevaun Cottrell as Chairperson. Our school community celebrates the contributions of all Board members and deeply thanks them for their service.

School P&C

A big thank you to our outgoing 2024 P&C committee. A very special thanks to Mrs Brooke Wilson who was the President.

The P&C have already met this year, and we now have a new committee. Congratulations to the following committee representatives: JD Muller – President; Sasha Fraser – Secretary; Kayla Elliott – Treasurer. It is great to also have many parents on the general committee. If you would like to join our P&C, please speak to one of the committee members or alternatively please ring the front office and they will advise you of the next meeting date.

Triple P Workshops for Parents

Monday 10th March (7pm-9pm): The power of positive parenting (under 12 years) Children of all ages need a safe, secure and loving environment to do well. This seminar will discuss children’s behaviour, how to create a safe, interesting and positive learning environment, how to use assertive discipline, and taking care of yourself as a parent.

Thursday 13th March (7pm-9pm): Promoting digital wellbeing (pre-teen and teens 10-16 years) One of the challenges for parents is knowing how to monitor and manage their teenager's use of technology, such as the internet, websites, social media, smart phones and other communication devices. This workshop will help you set rules and appropriate limits to encourage responsible, safe use of these evolving opportunities.

Thursday 3rd April (7pm-9pm): Fear-Less: Supporting children with anxiety (6-14 years) Everyone feels anxious at times, even children and teenagers. But anxiety may cause distress and get in the way of life. This seminar will help parents to understand how anxiety works, how to manage your child’s anxiety effectively and teach your child new coping skills.

In 2025, Newman Primary School will continue to implement The Resilience Project an evidence-based whole school wellbeing program. Students will engage in weekly lessons to understand and strengthen their practice of Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness and Emotional Literacy.

Gratitude involves recognising expressing appreciation for the people, places and things in our lives. Practicing gratitude allows us to pay attention to what we have, increasing feelings of happiness and leading to a more positive outlook on life.

Empathy involves understanding others’ feelings and perspectives and is practised through kindness, compassion and curiosity. Developing empathy fosters deeper connections, increases our likelihood of acting kindly, and helps us experience positive emotions.

The practice of Mindfulness is about an awareness of life as we are living it.  It allows us to be responsive to our experiences rather than reactive, and to live with greater balance, presence and connection.

Emotional Literacy involves learning to identify and label our emotions, as well as developing emotional regulation skills. When we can accurately name our feelings and emotions, it reduces the impact of uncomfortable emotions and enhances the effect of positive ones.

Positive Behaviour Support

Welcome to the Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) section of the newsletter! This year, we are placing a big focus on ensuring that parents and community members are well-informed about our fortnightly expectations and the comings and goings of how Positive Behaviour Support is used within our school.

Positive Behaviour Support (also known as PBS), is built around three core values:

  • Be Responsible (orange token)
  • Show Respect (purple token)
  • Strive for Success (yellow token)

This year, we are excited to have our new Positive Behaviour Support signs displayed in the Quad area of the school, which help remind everyone of these values.

Each fortnight, there is a focus on an expected behaviour from our Positive Behaviour Support Matrix, which is explicitly taught and practiced. Students are then rewarded with the corresponding token colour when they demonstrate the expected behaviour.

  • Week Five and Six expected behaviour: “We strive to follow our school’s PBS procedures.” This falls under the value Strive for Success.
  • Week Seven and Eight expected behaviour: “We walk under the verandahs and on walkways.” This falls under the value Be Responsible.

As of the end of Week Two, our school has earned a total of 873 tokens:

  • Be Responsible: 286
  • Show Respect: 214
  • Strive for Success: 373

If you have any questions about Positive Behaviour Support at Newman Primary School, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your classroom teacher.

Thanks for your continued support!

Early Learning Program

Wow, what a busy start to the school year at the Early Learning Program. It has been lovely to welcome lots of new families over the past two weeks.

The little ones have enjoyed small world tuff trays, water play, art activities and much more.

If you are interested in joining us, just come along and register. There is no cost associated with our Early Learning Program. It is proudly sponsored by BHP.

We look forward to seeing you.

ELP 0-3 Program

Newman Primary school runs an on-school site Early Learning Program for children and families aged 0-3.  This program targets children’s readiness for school by offering a coordinated approach to engage children and their families with important services and early intervention to address areas of developmental concern.

Come down to Newman Primary Room K9 in the Early Childhood area on Thursday and Friday from 8:00am - 10:00am to meet Miss Lisa Mahoney and learn about the importance that language plays in your child’s developmental journey.

This program is proudly sponsored by BHP and there is no cost to families who wish to attend.
