Eastlakes Edition

Term 1 Week 7

Acknowledgement to Country

On behalf of the students, teachers and parents of Eastlakes Public School, we would like to pay our respects and acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, past, present and future who have the first connection to this land.

We are thankful for the Gadigal and Kameygal clans for taking care of the land, sky and waterways on which we learn and play today.

Together we will rise to the challenge and be respectful andresponsible to care for our country.

Always was, always will be Aboriginal land

From the Principal

As we dive into the second half of the term, I wanted to share some highlights from the past two weeks at school. It's been a busy and enriching time for our students and staff alike!

Young Leaders Conference for Year 6 Students: Our Year 6 students recently had the incredible opportunity to attend the Young Leaders Conference at the ICC with Miss Maher. This conference was an exceptional platform for student leaders to cultivate essential skills, foster teamwork, and explore their potential as future leaders. We are immensely proud of their participation and the enthusiasm they displayed throughout the event.

Meet the Teacher: This was well attended by parents and carers K-6. Teachers shared specific information about class and school programs. A copy of the parent booklet is below for you to download.

International Women's Day Breakfast: Thank you for supporting and recognising International Women's Day with us. It was a lovely morning with yummy goodies provided by Woolworths at Eastlakes shopping centre. The event enabled us as a school community to empower our students with important messages of equality and respect.

NAPLAN: As you will be aware, the NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) assessments have officially commenced. According to the NAP website the purpose is to: ‘provide parents and schools with an understanding of how individuals are performing at the time of the tests… [and] also provide schools, education authorities and governments with information about how education programs are working and whether young Australians are meeting important educational outcomes in literacy and numeracy.’

Simple explanations are needed to ensure children understand the purpose, with a focus on trying their best, rather than passing or failing. NAPLAN tests are one aspect of each school’s assessment and reporting process, and do not replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers about each student’s performance.

Looking Ahead: As we move forward, we are excited about the upcoming events and learning opportunities, such as, Easter Hat Parade, Harmony Week, Multicultural Incursion, Parent Teacher Interviews and more.

Thank you for your ongoing support and involvement in your child's education. Together, we can continue to inspire and empower our young learners to reach their full potential.

Important Request

It is important that when the school calls parents and carers answer their phones or call back as soon as is practicable.

The school numbers are: 9667 3659 or 9317 5829.

Two of the most important reasons the school will call parents and carers is in case of an emergency, or your child is sick and needs to be collected.

Parent and carer contact details must be correct and up to date. Contact details can be updated at any time via an email to the school, change of details eForm in Audiri or seeing the office staff between the hours of 8.30am to 3.30pm.

Positive Behaviour for Learning

What is new in 2024?

Student Goal Cards will be used in your child’s classroom to reward positive behaviour.

Our specialist teachers, including library, community language and science, will have their own Student Goal Cards.

As specialist lessons are not daily, often only once a week, the accumulation of points is slower. Students will have their goal card retained over the course of their years at EPS until they reach their Diamond Award in these specialist programs.

PBL Points are awarded for a consistent set of expectations, outlined in our new matrix, that is taught to students weekly. The PBL matrix will be shared with parents and carers in the coming weeks.

Congratulations to our Class Award Winners!

    Information

P&C Association - Is a group consisting of parents and citizens in a school community, whose purpose is to assist the school and promote the interests of the entire school community.

Parents and carers are invited to this meeting about establishing a P&C at EPS. Our P&C did not recover well after all the lockdowns and got to the point where it was non existent. It's time we get parents and carers involved in the P&C again.

The most important thing is to enjoy life - to be happy - it's all that matters.
