A message from Clare

Good afternoon Families and friends,

‘Look into a child's eyes when they are singing and you can see that they are connected to a special place within…’ (Anon) How wonderful was our School Carols evening yesterday? Not only is it a lovely time of the year, it is such a great opportunity to create and share joy through singing. Our children did just that and l saw not one person walk out of the church without a smile on their face. My thanks to Tayla Buxton, Fr Alex and our teachers for preparing the children so well. My thanks also to the families who joined us for a picnic under the trees and for all of you who came to the Carols. It was very special to welcome our new Prep 2026 families, as well.

As the year comes to an end, we have some STAFFING news for 2026. Marie Kennedy will be taking some extended long service leave at the beginning of next year. We wish her well and hope she gets to put her feet up and relax. Tayla Buxton will be leaving us here at St Luke’s to join St Clement’s in Bulleen in 2026. We are very excited for her as she will be sharing her passion for Performing Arts with a much bigger community BUT we will miss her for the richness she brought to our school community. She has a bright future ahead and we’ll look forward to keeping in touch. Ted Morton, our LSO is also moving back home and to pursue his studies in education. He has built lovely connections with our children and l know he will be missed. We wish him well for  his future. Daniel Paoli joined our team for just six months and he has quickly made an impact. The children are loving the PE under his guidance. He will not be returning as he has travel plans in his sights next year. We wish him fun on those travels and thank him for his contribution to our school.

We have been busy interviewing and I'm very pleased to announce that we have appointed Gen Underhill as our Performing Arts Specialist teacher for 2026. She brings musical talent, passion and a real love for children and we can’t wait to get to know her. I would also like to announce that our PE Specialist teacher in 2026 will be Michelle Boyce. She is super keen to continue to promote and influence healthy bodies, healthy minds. We are still interviewing for a classroom teacher and LSO position and l will keep you posted as soon as we make a decision.

The extended nForma portal is up and running and it’s great to see some families using it to notify us of an absence. If you have not done so, please check the Audiri post earlier this week and follow the directions. Thanks for your support with this.

Please make sure you complete any outstanding school fees as soon as possible, especially if your child is leaving St Luke’s at the end of the year. Thank you.

The P&F decided that instead of running a carpark raffle for Term One of each year, a name would be drawn from the Prep 2026 family list. This is a great way to welcome our new Preplings. The recipient of the much sought after Term One carpark is the Rosendale Family. I’m sure they will be very grateful to have a prime parking spot. My thanks to the P&F for continuing this tradition.

Finally, we have our Mass of Thanksgiving on Friday 12th December at 9.15 am. This will be when our 2026 Student Leaders will be announced, it will be the final Mass for our Year 6 children to be a part of and a time to reflect, to be grateful and to give thanks. Please come along and join us. Morning tea in the Discovery Centre will be offered for those who can stay.

That’s it from me. Have a super good weekend.

Medication at School

If a student requires medication (over the counter or prescription) it must be provided to the office to be administered to your child.  Students must not carry medication and self administer throughout the day (including medications for seasonal allergies).

An authority is required from parents to administer medication at school or during a school activity.  Please note that this authority is not required in addition to an Allergy, Asthma or Anaphylaxis plan that has been completed by a medical practitioner.

If your child requires medication, please visit the office and complete a medical authority form.  This applies to short term medication (1 day to 1 week) as well as ongoing medication.

For ongoing medication (longer than a week), the authority must also be signed by an authorised AHPRA registered medical/health practitioner.

Parents must ensure that medication brought to school is in its original package with original labels. Please note, school staff will seek emergency medical assistance if there are concerns about a student’s condition following the administration of medication.

Seniors News

Literacy Learning in Seniors this term!

This term, our Grade 5 and 6 students have been deeply engaged in exploring The Last Bear by Hannah Gold — a moving story about a young girl named April who befriends a lone polar bear stranded on a melting Arctic island. The novel highlights important themes such as friendship, courage, and the urgent need to protect our environment. As we read, students have been summarising each chapter to build comprehension and identify key events, while also expanding their vocabulary by exploring interesting and powerful words from the text. To extend their learning, students are now writing persuasive letters to the Minister of the Environment, using arguments inspired by issues raised in the story — particularly the impact of climate change on polar bears and the Arctic Circle. It has been inspiring to see our young readers and writers use literature as a springboard for advocacy and creative thinking!

See students' reviews below.

Seniors Novel Reviews

Connor

I have learnt that this book is about a little girl called April and she is obsessed with animals and she goes to the arctic circle and she finds a polar bear and tries to be friends with it and she tries to save it from  the dangers of the arctic. The book wasn't my favorite.

Bradley

I have enjoyed reading this book  because it is very interesting. It is about a girl called April and  her dad is a meteorologist. They set off to bear island where apparently there are no bears. But April finds one and they become friends.

Ria

I have enjoyed this book a lot and my favourite bit is when this girl called April meets a polar bear for the first time. When I read the book I felt sort of sad but I still liked the book. Love was a main part in this book. Not romantic love but friendship love.

Georgia

This book taught me a lot. After reading I have become a lot more passionate about climate change and polar bears. When I finished the book I thought about the important messages it taught us. One of them was about friends and family. Family is an important part of life to treasure. And you can make friends with anyone/anything if you really try. The actual book was so exciting and gripping that sometimes I read ahead.

Olivia

This book has taught me a bit about polar bears and their habitat and how much friendships mean

Katia

I have learnt a lot about weather and climate change throughout this book. It is very descriptive and helped me understand how global warming affects animals and their habitats especially in the Arctic. Getting to know April's life has been interesting, learning about where she's from and how her past life affected her mentally.

Minah

I have read a lot about the last bear and how April is taking care of a lonely bear on a white cold island and how she gives him oat biscuits and peanut butter and I really love the way Hannah Gold wrote the book in a way that I can understand.

Katie

I really enjoyed this book because I really like how descriptive it was, and I also learnt lots about climate change and how it is affecting the Arctic. This book is also about friendship and caring for one another in hard times.

Oli

I have really enjoyed learning about the last bear and how the author writes. I have enjoyed reading it and filling in the comprehension grid about the book , and learning more and more. In the last bear I have  learnt more about April's life and how she has met the bear and I have really enjoyed this story.

Charlene

I actually loved this book because I felt that it was very moving and enrapturing, although sometimes when we were reading through the book I got a bit bored as it sometimes took a whole page to describe something  . I have learnt a lot about climate change and the devastating reality for polar bears through this book, therefore I highly recommend this to someone who loves to learn. 🙂

Desi

This book was actually really good. It had amazing descriptive words and was just generally really interesting to read. I loved learning about polar bears and their struggles, I strongly recommend books for others.☺️

Billy

I think this book is really a great read for the seniors. It is very descriptive and it is a story about hope and bringing out great feelings in people and it has helped me a lot with my persuasive writing.

AJ

I liked the book. That's all

Stella

The book is artfully written, with many different small stories along the way, telling a touching tale of an unlikely friendship, and the story of a gentle giant and a girl who cared. Hannah Gold does an amazing job of including the concerns of climate change along with the story of friendship along the way. It is an amazing book, and the ending is very sad but touching too. I would definitely recommend it to ages 9 and up. SO GOOD! 😊

Rose

I enjoyed the book because I thought it was engaging and interesting. I also thought that there was a lot of information in each chapter and that's why I thought it was really engaging. The book also taught  me that there are not that many polar bears because they don't have much food.

Oscar

I liked the book but I didn't really like the topic.

Lucas

I think this book is really really good because I felt a touch from the  writing by the author. I have had some interesting thoughts whilst reading the last bear. I really liked reading it and how it had some good times and some bad times

Hugo

I really enjoyed the last bear because it taught me about climate change and how it affects polar bears. I also liked how April had a connection with the bear and it shows that you shouldn't be scared to make friends.

Lachie

I enjoyed the last bear because it taught me more about polar bears and helping them.

Mason

I think that this book is alright, there are good chapters and there are bad chapters that are really boring. It is not really the type of book I would just pick up and read for fun.

Jacob

I really like the book so far but I think it takes a long time to tell something.

Ella

I really enjoyed The Last Bear because it tells us about April and bears friendship which I liked reading about.

We have been reading a book called “The Last Bear” and it’s about a girl named April and she has a big relationship with Bear who is stuck on Bear Island. I like how the comprehension grid was set out into boxes and it was pretty simple to fill it in. Most books we read at school are the best ones to read! I would love to read part 2 of this book because it is really intriguing.

Vivi

Over the last few weeks, we have been reading a book called The Last Bear, and it’s a heart-warming book about a friendship that no one would expect! The story about April and her best friend Bear is a really nice book, and I liked it so much I actually got the second book too.

The book that we were reading in Literacy was called the Last Bear. I enjoyed the book because I felt a connection with this book. It is kind of like a STRONG friendship bond and it's just like me and my friends. The story was about a girl and her father finding out that they are going to the Arctic Circle. Later on in the story, she finds the last polar bear and tames it.

In Writing we have been writing persuasive letters about the dangers polar bears face like climate change and pollution. I have really enjoyed writing this and learning about how polar bears are becoming endangered. In reading we have been reading a book called The Last Bear. In literacy we have been reading a book called The Last Bear by Hannah Gold. It is a book about a lost bear on Bear Island and then this girl called April decided to come and rescue the bear and become friends with it. I loved reading this book with the class. I learned a lot from it and I look forward to reading the next book. 😀

   Sophia 🌸🙂

We have been reading a story called The Last Bear. This book tells us the significance and effect climate change has on the Arctic, the polar bear’s home. The main character in this story is a girl called April who wants to put a stop to climate change but feels like she's working alone. Reading this book has made me realise how much climate change can affect the world and if it isn't stopped soon the polar bear species will be a distant myth.😮

Hannah 👀

In literacy we have been reading a story called The Last Bear. The book is about a girl named April and her dad that went to bear island for his work. When they arrived April decided to explore the island.

THOMAS

MAXIMUS

At St Luke's we’ve been reading about a book called ‘The Last Bear’ and it is about a girl named April who has befriended a bear on an island called ‘Bear Island’ but the befriended bear is actually the last bear on the island. April figures out a way to free the bear even while the ice caps keep melting.
