Drummoyne Public School

Term 2 Week 6 Newsletter - Friday 7 June 2024

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

Semester 1 Reports

Our dedicated teachers are currently exceptionally busy diligently preparing and writing student reports. This process is thorough and detailed, ensuring that each child's progress is accurately assessed and documented. The reports provide valuable insights into your child's achievements, areas for improvement and overall development. Semester 1 reports will be distributed via email on Friday 28th June and I am confident that you will find the reports both informative and reflective of your child's efforts and accomplishments this term. As a school, we are committed to continuous improvement and maintaining high standards in our reporting process. With this in mind, early next term, we will be conducting a survey to collect feedback regarding our current reporting practices. This feedback will inform changes we are planning for our end-of-year reports.

Term 2 Parent-Teacher Interviews

On the topic of surveys, something that came through quite clearly in the School Communication Survey that was sent out earlier this year was that many of you found the Term 1 Parent-teacher interviews very useful and would appreciate a second formal opportunity to meet with your child/ren’s teacher/s. With this feedback in mind, I am pleased to announce that a second round of Parent-Teacher Interviews will be held at the end of this term following the distribution of Semester one reports. These interviews will provide an opportunity for you to discuss your child's report and progress with their teacher, address any concerns, and collaboratively set goals for the remainder of the year. The partnership between home and school is crucial for the success of our students and I encourage you all to participate in these valuable discussions. The Parent-Teacher Interviews are scheduled to take place during the last week of Term (dates for each class TBC). Organisation will be similar to Term 1 and  booking details/instructions will be sent out via Audiri next week. We look forward to your active participation in these interviews.

Have a wonderful and restful long weekend - I hope you will all have the opportunity to relax and enjoy some quality time with family and friends.

Regards,

John Nguyen

FROM THE DEPUTY'S DESK

Every Day Matters!

Every day matters, right throughout the term!

It is really important for students to come to school every single day, unless they are sick.

Being at school every day boosts student learning and confidence and helps them build and maintain friendships.

A reminder that planned travel should only be taken during school holidays and students should be at school every day during school term, right from beginning to end.

Missing a day here or there may not seem like much, but absences add up. Every day matters and we are here to support all students in attending and engaging with their learning every day of the term.

Class of the Week - 5/6O

This term class 5/6O have been researching, drafting, writing, editing and publishing hybrid texts on a natural UNESCO site that is both persuasive and informative. Once the students chose a UNESCO natural world heritage site, they researched information about the geography, history of human impact and the conservation of the place. They then used persuasive devices such as rhetorical devices. This information was collated on a Canva poster.

The project was inspired by the book 'One Small Island' by Alison Lester and Coral Tulloch. It is based on Macquarie Island which is situated in the Southern Ocean.

THIS WEEK AT DPS

Peer Support Program

Week 6

In this week’s session, children explored how to join groups and accept others into their friendship group. The activities gave the children a chance to practice these skills, as well as how to say no in a respectful way, cope with being told no and inviting others to join them.

Please encourage your child to discuss with you the importance of saying no to people in a respectful way so that they don’t lose friends. Also discuss with your child various options they have at school if they should find themselves without anyone to play with during break time.

Debating Report Term 2-Week 6

This week Drummoyne debated against Dobroyd Point Public School in our second round, with a win for both teams. The topic was ‘Australia should have a four day working week’.

The affirmative team, the Hawkes, were the away team, with  Eme as 1st speaker, David as 2nd speaker, Aria as 3rd speaker and Olive as team advisor. They argued that a 4 day week had been trialed with success, discussing, improved work-life balance, increased productivity, environmental benefits and employee recruitment and retention. The Hawkes drove their case home with a compelling team line, ‘Work smarter, live larger!!’. Congratulations to all four students for their outstanding teamwork.

The Lyons were the home team. As the negative, they focused on the 4 day week not being applicable for certain industries, speaking about the stress of a compressed workload, reduced productivity, issues with employee entitlements and decreased collaboration opportunities. The Lyons’ compelling team line was ‘A thriving nation requires five days dedication’. Congratulations to 1st speaker Phoebe V, 2nd speaker Sophia, 3rd speaker Sophie and team advisor Theo for a  great debate.

Many thanks to Magi for providing transport. Also, thank you to our chairperson Oliver, and timekeepers and meeters and greeters, Isaac and Ava.

UNDERSTANDING THE NEW CURRICULUM

Kids Giving Back to the Community

In the school holidays I did VR and watched movies like most kids but I was privileged to participate in ‘Kids Giving Back’ and contribute to the community. ‘Kids Giving Back’ is an organisation that helps the homeless, elderly and others in need. I also found out they give out food for kids who are less fortunate.

In ‘Kids Giving Back’, we packed food boxes that meet the needs of a community of the homeless who live rough on the streets. We were tasked to make breakfast boxes that contained cereal, long life milk, biscuits and fruit kebabs as well as cutlery. We made the fruit kebabs from scratch, cut a variety of fresh fruits and made sure they were presentable when delivered.

On another ‘Kids Giving Back’ event, we also made cookies to go in the food boxes. Unfortunately one group mistakenly measured salt instead of sugar! Let’s just say some cookies became extra salty-caramel!! The best part of the event is when the finished products are stacked together and we realise how much we have achieved together that could help others later that evening. To finish them off, we all wrote positive messages and scribbled smiley faces on each of the boxes that would hopefully brighten their day.

Sure, ‘Kids Giving Back’ is not the same as watching movies or playing with friends, but it is undeniably rewarding as I gazed at my finished food boxes knowing someone may have a smile on their face because of it. Therefore, I highly recommend signing up to ‘Kids Giving Back’ as they have lots of programs during the school holidays.
