Henley Beach Primary School Newsletter

Term 3 week 6 - Wednesday 28 August 2024

From the Principal - Stephen Jolley

It was great to see students, staff and families come together to celebrate Book Week last Thursday. The parade was full of many characters and colour! Book Week provides an opportunity to shine a spotlight on reading which is an integral area of focus for our school. Along with the explicit teaching of reading skills, staff also endeavour to promote the joy and benefits of being a keen and active reader. Families have an important role to play in their child’s reading development; the combination of positive school and at home reading experiences have an immense benefit in children becoming capable readers. We hope that yesterday's after school information session, targeting reading in the junior primary, provided some helpful insights to the families in attendance. Whilst the primary years session was cancelled, we will aim to re-schedule further information sessions in the future, either later this year or in early 2025.

A reminder that the Scholastic Book Fair is set up in the library all week, please refer to the schedule on the flyer provided.

A further important home-school partnership is the presence of open communication. All staff at Henley Beach are committed to ensuring parents and caregivers have the opportunity to discuss their child's learning progress. Teachers can be contacted throughout the term, or alternatively, your child's teacher may also contact you if they have any areas that they wish to talk with you about. If you would like to speak with your child's teacher, please contact them via email, Seesaw or by calling the front office.

2025 Planning

Future enrolments are an important factor that helps inform the school’s class and staffing arrangements. In order to support the school’s planning for next year, for families of Reception students (starting in 2025), if you have not already contacted the school regarding your child’s enrolment, could you please do so as soon as possible. Alternatively, we require families to inform the Front Office if their child (yr 6 students being the exception) will be leaving Henley Beach at the end of 2024. This information helps with planning class structures for next year.

Morning Drop Offs and Afternoon Pick Ups

A reminder that staff are on supervision duty in the yard from 8.30am before school. If your child arrives prior to 8.30, they will need to go to Before School Care. Similarly, in the afternoons we have yard supervision until 3.10pm. Children not collected by this time will be taken to the office and parents notified.

Parent Engagement Survey

The annual parent survey is underway and closes midnight Sunday 8 September (end of week 7, term 3). The survey assists the department to better understand the things we’re doing well, where we can improve, and what’s important to you as a parent. The survey can be accessed via the link below and takes less than 10 minutes to complete.

School Sport

Congratulations to the boys' knockout netball team who competed in the final round of the competition yesterday. They finished runner-up which is a great achievement. Thank you to Brooke Jones for coaching the team and the families who were able to help out with transport.

Tomorrow, we have 33 students representing the school in the local athletics competition. Good luck to all students participating.

Playground Planning

As a part of the school’s commitment around exploring opportunities for upgrades to existing play spaces, we are working toward developing some concept ideas for the playground. A part of this process has involved student representatives from each class meeting with Simon Hutchinson, from Climbing Tree. The purpose of these meetings is to get feedback from students about their observations of the existing play equipment and identify new possibilities. Students have done a terrific job during these sessions by contributing insightful and valuable information. The work happening in this area is a long-term project for the school and will incorporate further feedback opportunities from within the school community as the plans become refined.

Wellbeing and Inclusion - Alecia Cailes

In week 4, we had a spotlight session on the National Week of Action against Bullying and Violence. This year, the focus changed from a day of action to a week of action, with the intent to focus on empathy, providing support, fostering relationships and the importance of speaking up. Opening up conversations is an important step, in order to reduce the space for bullying.

As part of this week, we invited all students in the school to share what helps them to feel safe at school. These have been on display in the Wellbeing Room, and later this term, will be put on display at a state-wide Autism Inclusion Teacher conference.

To increase a sense of belonging, we had additional lunchtime activities. The aim of these activities was to promote inclusion, develop connectedness and support engagement among a wide range of peers across the school. Embedding these practices into our everyday schooling will support all students to strengthen their sense of belonging and engagement as well as their connectedness.

In week 5, we celebrated Book Week. Each day we had Book Week activities in the library including craft, shared reading and book making. These were very well attended across the week!

Later this week, we look forward to our Father’s Day community breakfast. We extend our thanks to Foodland Henley Square and Bunnings Airport location for their generous donations to the day.

ThinkUKnow Family Presentation

ThinkUKnow Australia is an evidence-based education program delivered nationally to prevent online child sexual exploitation. ThinkUKnow Australia is a partnership between the Australian Federal Police, Microsoft Australia, Datacom and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.

The presentation will be delivered by a local law enforcement member and related industry volunteer. The presentation is pro-technology and addresses topics including self-generated child abuse material, online grooming, sexual extortion, and importantly encourages help-seeking behaviour. This is a fantastic opportunity for you to learn more about young people and the online environment, and how you can help them be safe and responsible technology users.

The presentation is scheduled for Thursday 5 September, starting at 5.30pm. Please refer to the flyer in this week's newsletter for further information.

Volunteering at HBPS

The Department for Education has mandated expectations regarding volunteering in schools and we are committed to doing our upmost to keep our children and school community safe.  All volunteers need to complete a Volunteer Application Form. As a volunteer you will also require a Working with Children Check (WWCC) screening clearance and need to complete an online Responding to Risks of Harm, Abuse and Neglect (RRHAN-EC) course. Volunteering cannot commence until these aspects have been completed.

We can help you with all of these requirements.

It is the responsibility of the volunteer to keep these documents up to date so please check expiry dates on clearances once issued.
