Principal’s Report

Mrs Chant

It is wonderful to be back at Beaudesert State School after a period of leave. Please see below information for the remainder of the term.

Staffing

This week we farewell Chappy Jade who has won a leadership position within Scripture Union. Chappy Jade and myself are working together to find a replacement Chaplain with the advertisement now live. Please see Chappy Jade this week if you have any questions.

This term we also warmly welcome Mrs Jackie Diamond to our permanent teaching team. Congratulations, Jackie.

Mr Ed Brimelow is on leave for the next 2 weeks.

Before and after school supervision

We start our school day at 8:35am with the learning bell at 8:40am. Upon arrival to school, all students put their bags away and go to the undercover area where supervision begins at 8:20am. Students then have the choice to play on the oval or stay in the undercover play area until the learning bell.

There should be no students running under or around school buildings before school. Staff will direct them to the supervised areas. If you are attending before school with your child, please remind them to follow these school rules.

After school our playgrounds are closed. Thank you to our lower school parents who are waiting in the designated waiting areas at pick up and not outside classrooms. This is highly disruptive to the learning that is taking place up to 2:50pm. Thank you for your support with this.

Cross Country coming up

Our Year 3-6 Cross Country Carnival will take place on Wednesday 20th March from 9:00am on our oval. Weather permitting. We have a pattern of rain each cross country carnival! Parents are most welcome to attend but we ask that you stay off the cross country track.  Mr Ed Brimelow, our PE teacher, is officer in charge on the day and will be returning to work for this event only while on leave.

Crazy Sock Day

On Friday 22nd March, our Year 6 student leadership team have organised a Crazy Sock Day. Please bring a gold coin donation to go towards the Year 6 Social. Please wear your usual school shoes and uniform.

Uniforms and Jewellery

Since returning from leave I have noticed a decrease in our students wearing the full school uniform. Upon enrolment in our school, we expect all students to have a full school uniform that they wear with pride each day. This includes maroon broad brimmed hats, plain socks, hair below the collar to be in a neat and tidy up style, no nail polish and a watch and one pair of stud or sleeper earrings only. Students with sensory considerations can wear an approved sensory necklace, with approval organised through our Head of Special Education, Nicole Inder.  As the cooler weather approaches, I encourage all families to organise a plain maroon jumper and track pants to wear to school which are easily organised through our school uniform shop or Best and Less. Hats, Socks & Jumpers must not be patterned in any way.

Easter bonnet parade

A Prep – Year 2 Easter Bonnet parade is organised for Thursday 28th March from 2:15pm in the Hall. Classes will be making their hats at school. We hope you can come!

Easter raffle

Each year our P&C organise an amazing Easter raffle for our families. This week tickets will be sent home at $2.00 each and can be returned to either the front office or the tuckshop on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. Final payment day is Friday 22nd March and the raffle will be drawn on Wednesday 27th March. Winners will be notified via phone on the Wednesday. Thank you for supporting our P&C.

Stop, drop, go at front of the school

A reminder that the front 3 car parks on Tina Street are a stop, drop and go zone with a 2 minute parking time. Each morning and afternoon we have parents parking in these spaces and they risk a parking fine from the QLD Police.

Sporting sponsorship forms

Each year the P&C offer sporting scholarships to students representing Beaudesert State School. If your child represents our school in any affiliated sport, please see the front office for a form. The request is then discussed at the next available P&C meeting. Copies of items for financial support always help with the application. Parents are not required to attend the P&C meeting. I will present your application on your behalf with the final decision made by the P&C executive.

Tuckshop

Please ensure all orders are in by 8:40am. Our tuckshop is made possible by our volunteers and we are always seeking new people to join the team. If you can help in any way, please see Laura in the tuckshop from Wednesday – Friday.

Prep playground

I am so happy to let you know that our $500 000 Prep playground upgrade will commence over the Easter break. Our preps will have an alternative eating and play area for Term 2 and if all stays on track, they will have the new play area available for the beginning of Term 3. We can’t wait for our families to see this new space.

F Block removal

Over the winter break, our F Block will be removed because it is a surplus building in our school. We look forward to having concrete hand ball courts in this space for our students from Year 1-6 from Semester 2.

Newsletter

Our newsletter is published twice a term and we use the Audiri app to communicate messages to our families in between newsletter weeks. Please download the Audiri app so you do not miss important messages from school.

Deputy Principal Update

Miss Gauld

Attendance

School attendance to date is 89.2% which is not a great start to the year.  Attendance is incredibly important as your children cannot learn or improve academically or access support if they are not attending.

Please check your child/ren class attendance since the start of the term. Congratulations to Prep C who are leading the attendance charge for the term!

Class data is shared weekly on parade and students are very excited when their class is the “weekly winner”.

If you would like to know about your child’s attendance or have any concerns please contact their class teacher.

Playgrounds

School playgrounds are out of bounds for all children before and after school this is to ensure children are safe at all times.

When waiting for parents of an afternoon, students should be sitting on the deck or grass areas. They should not be running around or kicking a football as accidents may happen.  Thank you to all those students who are sitting waiting patiently for pick up.

Senior School Classroom Reports

Year 3

Wow! How time flies. We cannot believe it is already Week 8. The Year 3 students have had a very busy term.

In English, Year 3 students have been looking at writing and comprehending persuasive texts. Students are currently writing and finishing off their persuasive letters to Mrs Chant to convince her for a new playground! It has been a very fun unit, and the students are becoming extremely persuasive!

In Math, we have been looking at umber and place value in order to solve addition and subtraction problems. All 3 classes will be focusing on chance and data towards the end of the term.

In Science, students have really enjoyed looking at living things and their features in order to classify them into groups. We have all learnt so much new information about the animal kingdom!

In HASS, we have continued looking at celebrations and commemorations and will begin our HASS assessments soon.

This year, all Year 3 students have been involved in a streamed approach to spelling. Students have enjoyed moving around of a Wednesday-Friday and completing their spelling lesson with one of the three Year 3 Teachers. We have seen some wonderful improvement in this area!

It is a very busy time at the moment in the Year 3 space. As you can see, we have plenty of assessment to get through, but not only this, this week Year 3 students will sit their first NAPLAN test. If you have any NAPLAN questions, please see your child’s teacher.

Next term, students will be partaking in Star Lab. Notes will go home very soon as there will be a cost involved in this incursion, so we hope to give plenty of notice.

We look forward to the final 3 weeks of term and wish you all a very Happy Easter. We hope that you enjoy the holiday with your family and loved ones.

Warm Regards,

Miss Stepanoff, Mrs Griffin, Mrs Martin

Busy Busy Year 3

Year 4

Wow, what an awesome term so far! The year 4 classes have been busy exploring persuasive advertising in English. This has been something they are, not surprisingly, all very familiar with.  They have designed their own cereal packaging, connecting the English unit to our Media Arts unit, and have enthusiastically learnt how to use the Stop Motion App with the goal of producing an advertisement for their individual cereal package.

Our Science unit has also been connected to English and Media Arts. Students have been learning about the physical properties of different natural and processed materials and working towards designing and building packaging, to transport one of ‘Nans cookies’, which is not only durable and water proof, but also biodegradable. We were also fortunate enough to spend time with Mr Tyrrell who shared with us his knowledge (from teaching Secondary school science) by taking us through some very cool experiments, creating slime and other gelatinous materials used in the motion picture industry.

Mathematics has also been a lot of fun with students participating in and exploring the collection, recording and representation of Data, along with getting hands on with Chance (probability) and learning about addition, subtraction, multiplication and division relating to Odd & Even numbers.

HASS has seen us focussing on citizenship, laws and rules which students have connected back to their ‘citizenship’ at Beaudesert SS and the relevance of their rights and responsibilities as members of our school community, in particular our own school rules ‘Be Responsible, Stay Safe, Show Respect: Be an Active Learner!’

Swimming has been one of the highlights of the term with all students exhibiting excellent organisation skills, behaviour and progressing well over the four weeks.

The Year 4 classes have had recognition for their great behaviour by receiving Pikachu in their classrooms for their behaviour and transitioning in their specialist lessons. We have also seen other great rewards such as the attendance cup and Principals Chair on a number of occasions this term.

We have had a terrific response to our Year 4 Camp expression of interest for our planned camp at Currumbin, which we are all looking forward to very much.  Check it out if you are not familiar with it: https://currumbinfarmschool.eq.edu.au/

We cannot wait to see what exciting adventures Term 2 brings for Year 4!

The Year 4 Team.

Year 5

Here we are, Week 8, Term 1 already! Our Year 5 students are off to a successful start both mentally, within our classroom settings and physically through participating in extra-curricular activities outside our classrooms. Swimming has been a welcome relief most weeks as the hot weather continues.

Our learning focus in English this term has been building knowledge of Persuasive Texts and working towards presenting a particular point of view about an issue.

Our Visual Arts unit has sparked the interest of most students. They learn in, though and about Visual Arts practices, including the fields of art, craft and design. Students experience and explore visual artworks created by artists working in diverse contexts, styles and forms, and build understanding of the significance and impact of visual arts practice and culture for themselves and local and global communities. In Year 5, we have been focussing on the Elements of Art. To date, we have explored Colour, Line, Form and Shape. There are seven Elements of Art to cover overall.  We will continue to grow our knowledge by further investigating: Value, Space and Texture throughout the remainder of this term.

We would like to thank parents/carers for their ongoing assistance on getting students to school on time, every day. This support does not go unnoticed. Starting our school day promptly with everyone present ensures a smooth curriculum delivery. It’s true – every minute of learning counts! Thank-you for that, we look forward to working alongside you this year.

Finally, we would like to wish all Year 5 students participating in NAPLAN the very best. You have all worked so hard throughout this term.  Take care everyone.

Year 6

I can’t believe we are almost to the end of Term 1!!! Not sure where the time has gone!

Term 1 has been busy, welcoming new staff and students to our cohort, swimming, 2 incursions already and a bunch of teaching has certainly made the time fly!

So what have we been doing?

In English, we have been busy learning about advertising. What makes an advertisement more appealing and persuasive? We are beginning to see what they have learnt with the students creating their own travel advertisement. Some are looking extremely appealing; I am very tempted to book a holiday to some of their destinations!!!!

In maths, we have been learning how to read timetables. Next time you need to catch a bus, train or plane, get them to help you! See if they can convert 24-hour time or work out elapsed time. Very handy skills! We are also learning how to read graphs. I love this unit, and many of the students are doing a fantastic job! Pretty sure they find reading graphs a bit easier than reading some of the books in class!

In science, we are investigating reversible and irreversible changes to matter. Eg Ice melts to water and then can freeze back to ice versus cracking an egg, heating it in a pan and cooling it to see if goes back in its shell. Mmmmmm reckon they know that that one isn’t reversible!

Joke time:

Why is it bad to trust atoms?

They make up everything!

Hahahahahaha!

In HASS we have been learning about Federation and the Australian Government, who knows, perhaps we have some future politicians among us!?

In media, the kids have also been polishing up their skills on iMovie, creating short clips and developing their knowledge on camera angles and types of shots. Watch out Spielberg!

Swimming has been a blast, we are very lucky to have spent time every week in the pool, building such important skills. Well done kids! I know that for some it is a challenge and they have faced it like champions, very proud!

So, until next term, take care and thanks for all your support!

From your year 6 teachers

Miss S, Mrs Morgan, Mrs Russell, Mrs Lam and Mrs Foster

Lost Property

As always, we have a mountain of lost property piling up at school. A lot of it is unnamed which makes it extremely hard to get it returned to the rightful owner. If your student has lost any items direct them to the lost property bins which are located under A Block Administration Building, or you're welcome to pop in for a look yourselves. Please check there if your children are missing any of their belongings.

PLEASE MAKE SURE ALL BELONGINGS ARE CLEARLY LABELLED!

Chappy Corner

It is hard to believe, but this will be my last Chappy Corner as your chaplain. The past 9 years have been such a blessing, working to support our school community. I am truly thankful for the opportunity of being your Chappy and thankful for all of the amazing staff, students and families who make up our Beaudesert State School community. I am going to miss being here each week but look forward to popping back in from time to time. One of my first jobs in my new role will be to help find a new chappy, so stay tuned 😊.

I have had so many highlights over my time as Chappy, from conversations with students, families and staff, to hearing all the amazing stories of kindness that have come out of our Kindness Project, cooking with our HOPE group, running Bella Girls and All Stars, starting our day with brekky club, getting messy at our colour fun run and of course, claiming victory in our staff vs students challenges.

Beaudesert State School will always be a very special place for me and I look forward to continuing to hear of all the wonderful things that are happening. Keep being kind and thank you Beaudesert State School.

😊 Chappy Jade

Sports Update

Throughout this term there have been many sports trials held with quite a few students being selected to progress further.

NETBALL

On Tuesday 13th February Beaudesert Zone trials for netball were held at the Beaudesert Netball Courts. After a long day three of our students were lucky enough to be selected. Congratulations to Paige, Evie and Kayla.

Paige, Evie and Kayla then went on to play at the District Trials at Canterbury College on 21st February and all three of them were selected to represent the Pacific District at the Regional Netball trials on 6th March at Carrara. Despite not being selected to move forward they still had a great day and enjoyed the experience.

TOUCH

Yarrabilba SHS held the Beaudesert Zone touch football trials this year. BSS had a few students make it through to the next level. It was a tough competition for the boys with a large number of participants. Fletcher and Cody made it to the possible v probable match but just missed out on being selected.

The girls all played great also and saw Paige, Evie and Kayla progress. They then attended the District Trials on 27th February with Paige and Kayla being selected for the team and Evie a shadow player. Paige and Kayla had a big day at the Regional Trials on 12th March at Southport and were unfortunately unsuccessful in a high-class field.

RUGBY LEAGUE

On the 28th of February the Beaudesert Zone Rugby League Trials were held at Beaudesert Kingfishers club.

The boys put in an amazing effort and a number of our BSS students played well enough to be chosen.

Congratulations to

Corban

The Arts

Performing Arts

Students in years 4-6 are currently immersed in a unit on comedy, where they're delving into its diverse forms, fundamental principles, and historical and contemporary examples. Exploring the nuances of humour, they're delving into different comedic genres, exploring the rules that make us laugh, and dissecting comedic gems from history to the present. Alongside this exploration, they're also mastering the art of improvisation through theatre sports, honing quick thinking and creativity. In week 6 we had a visit from some year 12 students from Beaudesert State High, who joined in with our theatre sports. This unit not only tickles their funny bones but also develops their confidence and sharpens critical thinking as they analyse the evolution of comedy.

Design Technology

Year 3: Design Technology and Healthy Snacks

In Year 3, our budding designers have been busy exploring the world of Design Technology, with a specific focus on creating healthy snacks. Students have been learning about the different technologies used in food production and processing, from the traditional methods of farming to modern machinery and food processing plants. We have been following the journey of food from farm to table.

Understanding the importance of a balanced diet, students have also been introduced to the five food groups: fruits, vegetables, grains, protein, and dairy. In term 2 they will be applying their knowledge to design their very own healthy snacks that incorporate technologies in their production.

Year 4-6: Digital Technologies and Digital Systems

Meanwhile, our Year 4-6 students have been immersing themselves in the world of Digital Technologies. From digital devices to hardware, software, and peripheral devices, our tech-savvy students have been exploring the building blocks of digital technology.

In their investigations, students have been examining the functionality of various digital devices, from computers and tablets to smartphones and gaming consoles. They have been dissecting the components that make up these devices, gaining a deeper understanding of how they work.

Through hands-on activities and interactive lessons, they are discovering how networks connect devices and enable communication and data sharing within our Local Access Network.

STEM Program

Design Challenge: Building Huts to Brave the Winds

In the heart of our STEM lab, our students have been embarking on an exciting design challenge – constructing huts capable of withstanding the force of a mighty wind. Armed with their ingenuity and determination, our budding engineers have been hard at work, brainstorming, designing, and building hut replicas that can brave the elements.

Using a hairdryer to simulate strong winds, students will put their huts to the ultimate test, eagerly observing if their creations withstand the gusts and stand tall against the elements. Through this hands-on experience, our young engineers are gaining invaluable insights into structural stability and materials science.

Robotics Adventures: From LEGO Spike Prime to Sumo Robot Competitions

Our students have also been diving into the thrilling world of robotics, starting with the construction of drive bases using LEGO Spike Prime robots. Our students have been learning how to code their robots to perform specific movements and tasks.

As they prepare for the upcoming Sumo Robot competition at Beaudesert High School in week 10, our students are honing their robotics skills.

Japanese - LOTE

Minnasan Konnichi Wa – Hello everyone!

This term, in years 4- 6, we are exploring many different uses of numbers in Japanese, including telling the time and money.  We have been very busy in Japanese learning our numbers, not only from 1-10 but all the way to 1000.  Did you know we only need to know 1-10 to count to 99 in Japanese.  Be sure to ask your child about counting Japanese numbers and the actions that go with them.

2024 is the Year of the Dragon – Tatsu Doshi.  You are born in the Year of the Dragon if you are born in the following years: 2024, 2012, 2000, 1988, 1976, 1964.  Just keep subtracting 12 to get your year of birth.

There are 12 animals in the Japanese Zodiac, so if you are born in the Year of the Dragon, you will need to wait another 12 years for your year to come around again.

Pikachu Points

In line with our PBL at Beaudesert State School, each week classes earn Pikachu Points. On parade the class with the most Pikachu Points is awarded Pikachu and he stays with the class for the week.  The kids love the competition as we strive for excellent behaviour in our students every day.  Here is Pikachu enjoying some time in one of our winning classes.

Coles Pokemon Builders – We are collecting the Pokemon Builders for our Japanese classroom, so if you would like to send them in with your child, we will add them to our Pokemon wall.  Happy to return them at the end of us collecting them, just be sure to have your child let me know so I can label them.

Did you know POKEMON is short for Pocket Monster?!

Japanese things are all around us – from the cars we drive to the appliances we may use in the kitchen, and much more!

Please feel free to email me if you would like to know how your child is going – jmbec0 @eq.edu.au

Arigatou gozaimasu – thank you

Your child’s language teacher,

Jacinta Becerra
