Newman Primary School

Newsletter: Term 1 Issue 2

Principal's Message

Congratulations and well done to both Room 4 and Room 20 for their hosting of our recent assemblies! The power of “yet” and all about the number 20! The confidence that is shining though as our students perform and speak in front of everyone with confidence, is certainly continuing to be a highlight this year. A massive thank you to the P&C for supporting our award winners with a morning tea for them and their parents/carers.

Over the last few weeks, we have hosted our Year 6 camp meeting. This is a very exciting time for our Year 6 students as we start to organise their school camp. We have also celebrated Harmony Day and WA’s rich and diverse culture. Newman Primary School has our own little multicultural community. I, once again, am in awe of our wonderful staff who continue to embrace all events offered and the effort they give to make our students time at Newman Primary School a positive, educative, and rewarding one. We hope the students enjoy all these opportunities that we offer.

We participated in and recognised the National Ride to School Day with many students participating in a fun obstacle course before school. I continue to mention to students the importance of bike and scooter safety. Some of our students continue to arrive at school on scooters and bikes without helmets and ride in our front car park before school opens. Helmets are such a simple but potentially life-saving piece of safety gear, as well as bringing a lock to keep these safe during the school day. I hope you will join me to reinforce this message.

A massive congratulations to our Year 3 and 5 students who have completed NAPLAN online for 2025.  We are proud of all the preparation that has gone into organising this and our students have done a wonderful job in familiarising themselves with the online platform. We look forward to accessing and sharing the results later in the year.

A friendly reminder to all families that children should not arrive at school before 7.45am in the morning. From 7.45am, we provide supervision in the undercover area before students move to classes at 8am. In our ECE area, supervision is provided by parents until drop off to the classroom doors at 8am. We also ask that parents support us by ensuring children are not playing on any equipment before or after school. We thank you for your support.

Please assist us by informing the school if your child is unwell and not able to come to school. If it is an extended absence due to a necessary, trip away please make an appointment to discuss. Holidays and travel are regarded by the Department as unauthorised absences.

Newman primary School fosters resilient learners, embraces diversity and cultivates a collaborative school community for lifelong learning and personal growth. We value collaborating with parents and families as critical partners in student learning outcomes. Effective communication is the key to building a positive relationship between home and school and plays an important part in the education of your child. You should feel confident that we will listen and respond to your concerns and effectively manage and resolve complaints.

Issues may arise during your child’s schooling, and these are more productively resolved if you raise them with the school directly, as early as possible. If you are not sure who to speak to, you can start with your child’s teacher. For some matters, it may be appropriate to talk directly to our administration team.

Please support our wonderful P&C by donating some chocolate for the Easter raffle and selling your raffle tickets. If you need to drop off any donations, you are more than welcome to bring them up to the office. We can then pass them on.

Students are now preparing and getting excited for the upcoming swimming carnival on Friday 4 April. This is for our Years 3 – 6. Come along and join us to see who will take home the shield!

Next term our students will be participating in a fun colour run. As a school, we hope to raise funds to purchase a selection of fun outdoor equipment for our students to use during their break times. Our launch date to start getting sponsors is WEDNESDAY 9 APRIL. Students will bring home their fundraising information booklets on this day. Book the following date into your calendars – WEDNESDAY 28 MAY FOR OUR COLOUR RUN FUN for all students from Kindergarten to Year 6. 😊

Don’t forget to attend our ANZAC Day service on Friday 11 April, commencing at 9:00am. This will be hosted by our student leadership team. This is also students’ last day of Term 1.

With only two weeks until the end of Term 1, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a wonderful two week break with your families. We look forward to seeing all staff and students back at school on Monday 28 April.

Closing the gap

Closing the Gap acknowledges the ongoing strength and resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in sustaining the world’s oldest living cultures.

Closing the Gap is underpinned by the belief that when Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have a genuine say in the design and delivery of policies, programs and services that affect them, better life outcomes are achieved. It also recognises that structural change in the way governments work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is needed to close the gap.

Triple P Workshops for Parents

Thursday 3rd April (7pm-9pm): Fear-Less: Supporting children with anxiety (6-14 years) Everyone feels anxious at times, even children and teenagers. But anxiety may cause distress and get in the way of life. This seminar will help parents to understand how anxiety works, how to manage your child’s anxiety effectively and teach your child new coping skills.

Making friends By Professor Matt Sanders For many children, starting school is an exciting time – new classes, new faces and hopefully, new friends to be made. Having good friends is important to a child’s self-esteem but, unfortunately, children do not always know how to look after friends. You can lend a hand by helping your child develop good social skills. Talk to your child about being a good friend and encourage your child to practice skills such as:

• Looking at and listening when someone is speaking to them, such as a friend telling them a story

• Taking turns in games and activities

• Asking what others might like to do rather than assuming that other children will always want to follow

• Thinking about others people’s feelings. “I wonder how Tom is feeling now. How do you think you would feel if that happened to you?”

• Helping others

• Being friendly and welcoming to a new child in class.

To help your child make friends, and so your child can practice being a good “host”, you may like to invite another child to your home for a play. Be prepared to contact the parents to organise this if your child is too shy to ask. Professor Matt Sanders is founder of the Triple P – Positive Parenting Program®. Harmony Day

Last Friday, Newman Primary School participated in Harmony Day with many students wearing orange or cultural dress to school. Classes participated in various activities that allowed students to share and celebrate their different backgrounds, cultures and identities.

Harmony Day is celebrated across Australia and encourages respect and inclusion for all, coinciding with the United Nations' International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.  The day highlights the importance of respect, belonging and cultural diversity in our school community.

Ride to School Day

On Friday 21 March, Newman Primary School participated in Ride to School Day, to encourage student to actively travel to school, promoting physical activity and healthy habits.

Students participated in obstacle course on their bikes, skates or scooters to practice skills such as stopping, turning and dodging obstacles.

Positive Behaviour Support

Term One/Week Eight

It is hard to believe we are already near the end of term one. Alot of new initiatives have been implemented at Newman Primary School to ensure our students understand what Positive Behaviour Support is and the expected behaviours for each fortnight. At Monday parade every second week, we introduce little skits that demonstrate our expected behaviour for that fortnight. As our expected behaviour changes on a fortnightly basis, the first week will see it introduced in class by the teacher with designed lesson plans. The skits will then be performed during the second week as a reminder to students about our Positive Behaviour Support expectations. You may have also noticed that teachers are now posting the fortnight’s expected behaviour on our Class Connect pages. This ensures that parents and the community are kept informed about what is happening at Newman Primary School regarding our Positive Behaviour Support. This is our expected behaviour for the following fortnight.

Week Nine and Ten expected behaviour: “We demonstrate sportsmanship.” This falls under the value Strive for Success. Tokens for each class are collected and counted at the end of each fortnight. Here is a rundown of our token collection this term so far: As of the end of Week Six, our school has earned a total of 3141 tokens:

• Be Responsible: 872

• Show Respect: 711

• Strive for Success: 1558

Students have now reached their first whole school reward which was Wear Your Sport Colours to school day. This was held today. It was amazing to see so many students in their favourite sporting team colours.

If you have any questions about Positive Behaviour Support at Newman Primary School, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your classroom teacher.

Thanks for your continued support.

Have a wonderful school holiday and we will see you in term two.

ELP 0-3 Program

Newman Primary school runs an on-school site Early Learning Program for children and families aged 0-3.  This program targets children’s readiness for school by offering a coordinated approach to engage children and their families with important services and early intervention to address areas of developmental concern.

Come down to Newman Primary Room K9 in the Early Childhood area on Thursday and Friday from 8:00am - 10:00am to meet Miss Lisa Mahoney and learn about the importance that language plays in your child’s developmental journey.

This program is proudly sponsored by BHP and there is no cost to families who wish to attend.

Unfortunately, due to staffing shortages, our Early Learning Program is cancelled for the remainder of this term.

We hope to be back, ready to work and have fun with your little ones as of THURSDAY 1 MAY 2025.

We do apologise for this inconvenience. See you all again soon!
