Term 2 Week 3

Principal’s Message

School Pride

I spoke last week at the assembly on behalf of the staff sentiment of pride that we have in our students. Our students never cease to impress us with their exemplary behaviour, fair sportsmanship, respectful conduct and general well mannered behaviour. There have been plenty of examples of times where students have earned Dudley PS the high reputation that we have come to know and expect. Our most recent event would be the Zone Cross Country Carnival where our students were sporting the newly designed representative singlet tops. The sense of belonging and confidence in the students was clearly evident. Many thanks to all of our families who are continuous partners of Dudley PS and offer never-ending support to the staff and students in striving for the highest goals in educational excellence.

External Validation

Our executive team have led a process of collating evidence to document the schools progress and achievement against a framework that indicates excellence across a variety of domains within NSW Public Schools. We had our panel interview on Tuesday and received positive affirmation of our on-balance self-assessment of the school’s place right now and identified future directions and focus areas for moving the school forward as we begin planning for a new strategic improvement plan to begin next year. We look forward to engaging more with our school community in the consultation and design of the new strategic plan which is due to be implemented at the beginning of 2024.

Attendance - Everyday Matters

Our focus on improving school attendance continues to go from strength to strength as we continue to record our best attended days for our students throughout the first few weeks of Term 2. This strategic focus is aimed at increasing the amount of learning days for every student in order to maximise the learning opportunities for each individual. Everyday matters!

Please see below the information regarding approximate attendance percentage rates this term. Our school target is 90% or higher attendance for each student. There are 47 school days calendarised for Term 2.

95% is 45 days of attendance (only 2 days absent)

90% is 42 days of attendance (only 5 days absent) – This a whole week of learning.

85% is 40 days of attendance (7 days absent)

80% is 38 days of attendance (9 days absent)- almost 2 weeks of learning.

Here we can see why Everyday Matters! Thanks for the ongoing support in holding high expectations for student attendance throughout Term 2.

Wishing all the Dudley PS mothers, grandmothers, aunties and other special women in our students’ and staff’s lives a wonderfully fabulous day on Sunday. You deserve to be treated as goddesses! Many thanks for all you do to support the academic and wellbeing development of our students.

Have a wonderful week,

Kind Regards

Chad Tsakissiris

Classroom

Peer Support

All K-6 students have been participating in Peer Support lessons each Friday on odd weeks this semester.

Peer support is designed to provide a support network for all students in the school and to give our Year 5 and 6 students an opportunity to lead and instruct a group of students. Lessons are sequenced and focus on themes such as learning dispositions, resilience (through the Bounce Back program), growth mindset and positive relationships.

Our program has 36 groups of around 6-7 children, that split off into our eleven classrooms each fortnight. The students in these groups will remain together for the entire time that they attend Dudley Public School, with the new Kindergarten students matching up with their buddies at the start of each new year.

Leaders meet on the Tuesday afternoon before the session to run through the lesson plan with Stage 3 teachers and collect all resources for their kits, so they are ready to go for the Friday.

The sessions have been running very well, and we are proud of how all students have been engaging and behaving during Peer Support.

Term 2 Overview

Week 1 – Life has ups and downs, but you can always bounce back.

Week 3 – Unhelpful thinking makes you feel more upset - think again + Nobody is perfect, not you and not others.

Week 5 – Concentrate on the good and funny bits when things go wrong + Everybody has setbacks sometimes.

Week 7 – Blame fairly + Accept what can’t be changed (but try and change what you can change first).

Week 9 – Catastrophising exaggerates your worries +Keeping things in perspective.

Library

Book Club brochures went home last week. Please complete all orders through LOOP online by Friday this week.

Overdue books

Please check at home for any overdue library books. We currently have over two hundred overdue loans on the library system. If your child thinks they have already returned a book that is still on their account I am happy to assist them to look for it during lunch times on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. I will send home overdue notices next week. Let's work together to reduce this huge number and get our books back into circulation to be enjoyed by everyone.

PRC

The Premiers Reading Challenge is still ongoing. Don't forget students in years three to six must complete their reading logs online independently. I will complete reading logs for students in kinder to year two. I am happy to assist anyone who needs help to get their logs updated.

Sport Desk

Paul Kelly Cup

Congratulations to both of our Dudley Public School Paul Kelly Cup teams that competed in the local round at Warners Bay, last Thursday. Our boys and girls teams both showed great AFL skills and sportsmanship in their games against other schools, with both teams coming away with wins on the day.

We had amazing weather and it was great to see so many smiling faces at the completion of the competition.

Sustainability

Garbage Guardians

This week we are focused on the yellow commingled recycling bin.

Things that can be recycled in this bin need to be clean and free of liquid. If it's dirty, you need to put it in the red bin, or clean it if you can.

This week our Garbage Guardians and teachers have selected Hannah Shearer from 1/2M as the award winner. She was extra delighted to have received two awards in one day!

Hannah stops and thinks carefully before sorting her rubbish into the correct bins.

She lives our Garbage Guardian motto of "before you bin it, check what's in it!"

Gardening Club

The garden is thriving at the moment. This week we planted some seedlings and some seeds that we had watched germinate in classrooms. Some seeds got a little mouldy without enough light yet still grew - true perseverance and resilience in action!

Dudley is excited to be hosting the Hunter Schools Environment Network of teachers at the end of May. They are coming to have a look at our eco-sense garden and bee garden.

In the lead up to this, we need a bit of help with pruning our plants and laying down a new layer of mulch. We'd love to see you all at the working bee on Sunday 21st May. Even if you can only spare 30 minutes to pop in and spread a few buckets of mulch, it would be greatly appreciated.

Our wonderful gardening crew are always willing to help but their little legs and arms means the job gets done a little bit slower.

Check out the P&C message to find out details of the other working bee projects.
