Student-led Conferences

Thank you to all of the parents who came to share their child’s learning journey this week through our student-led conference. Thanks also to the teachers for preparing the students and their classrooms and for welcoming our parent community.

Rugby League Gala Day

This week we welcomed Donald Saunders (development coach for the Brisbane Broncos and also a head Queensland Schoolboy Rugby League Coach at Palm Beach Currumbin State High School) and Brian Collins (a former Qld Schoolboys Rugby League player and a current Rugby League coach with Toowoomba Rugby League team Highfields) to run coaching clinics for all of our students from Prep to Grade 10. On Friday Don and Brian coached our Grade 4 – 10 boys in preparation for the carnival Saturday. Saturday we are running the Rugby League Gala Day, where we will welcome all Primary Schools from around Lihir to attend a carnival.

2025 Classes

I am currently organising classes for the 2025 school year. If you know your child / children will not be attending Lihir International School in 2025, and you have not yet informed me, please let me know as soon as possible, so that year level numbers and class organisation can be finalised. 2025 classes will be announced in week 10. Please also submit enrolment forms for any new students to LIS.

Year 10 Graduation

On Monday, 18 November, our year 10 class, accompanied by their parents, guardians and teachers, will have their graduation dinner. This is a time for them to celebrate and recognise their time at LIS. We will farewell our wonderful year 10s as a school community at the Awards Night on Wednesday, 4 December.

Library Books Return

There will be no more library book borrowing from the beginning of Week 8. Students are requested to return all borrowed books to the library.

Ms Savitas needs to audit all resources and have them on the shelves ready for borrowing next year.

School Resources Return

During the course of the year, some students have borrowed resources, such as dictionaries and calculators, to use at home for their homework activities.

These must now be returned to the school for student use next year.

We also request that all home readers to be returned to classrooms by the end of Week 7.

Awards Night

In the last week of this term, on Wednesday 4 December, the school will host its Awards Night. The evening will consist of various awards for each class and feature class concert items. Further information regarding the Awards Night will be disseminated in coming weeks.

School for term 4 will finish on Thursday the 5 December.

Please make an appointment to see the principal if you have any concerns or queries.

Regards,

Mr Kevin Collins

At LIS - Wellbeing Matters!

The Australian Student Wellbeing Framework supports schools to provide every student with the strongest foundation possible for them to reach their aspirations in learning and in life.

The vision of the Framework is that schools are learning communities that promote student wellbeing, safety and positive relationships so that students can reach their full potential.

The Framework is based on evidence that demonstrates the strong association between safety, wellbeing and learning.

Thank you to Ms Dovaston and the Prep class for your great assembly.

PAT Tests

Over the past week, students from Prep – Year 9 completed online ‘PAT’ tests in English and Mathematics. PAT stands for Progressive Achievement Tests.

These tests are conducted in many schools in Australia as well as international schools and are used to track both individual student and year level learning progress. These tests are not used for student reporting but give teachers evidenced-based data about a student’s learning at a given point of time. Staff analyse data from these tests in order to identify future learning needs.

These tests are facilitated through the ACER (Australian Council for Educational Research) website  - www.acer.org/au/pat/progressive-achievement.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact either myself or your child’s teacher.

Curriculum update

Both Australia and Papua New Guinea have released updated versions of their Curriculum documents. Teachers are currently reviewing programs to align with Version 9 of the Australian Curriculum and the PNG Standards-based Curriculum. This process will continue through 2025.

Primary Student-led Conferences

Primary Student-led Conferences took place on Wednesday; it was lovely seeing parents come to share some of the learning they are doing in class.

Work Ready Program

This week Thursday, we had our TMTM and Upstander Training facilitated by Ms. Jermah Kambao and Ms. Alu Kila from the Respect @ Work Team.

On Friday this week, our WRP Trainees went for a tour and short presentations afterwards from both the Mine and Process Plant Teams respectively.

Bulk screening was done and completed for all the new applications for the WRP. A list of all the applicants that met the requirements were sent to Community Relations for verification of their Lihirian Category status.

As of the 1 December 2024, all new applications for WRP will be closed until further notice. This action was taken in order to screen and duly process all the 400 plus applications that were received, before we accept new applications in the new year. A formal Toksave will be placed on relevant noticeboards and also aired through the Trupla FM.

FODE

Students are continuing their studies and doing individual work at their own pace with assistance from STM staff.
