WELCOME BACK TO TERM 2
Learning focus for Term 2
Term 2 is already well under way. Our teachers are working closely with our Literacy Coach to embed the department’s scope and sequence for Phonics, Spelling and Morphology and students are now used to the new routines. During last term, all students were assessed for their Oral Reading Fluency. Being able to read fluently provides a bridge to reading comprehension. So those students who need support with their fluency will be provided with extra intervention, as well as practice in class.
All classes are also focussing on Narrative writing: learning the structure of narratives and how to engage their readers in entertaining storylines. Later this term, teachers will assess students’ writing using the Brightpath tool. Having used this tool over the last couple of years means that we will have a clear picture of student progress over this time period. This will support teachers to work with students to set their own goals to develop their writing further. During our pupil free day (9th June), we will get together with other local teachers to moderate our writing tasks in order to ensure consistency in assessment.
Parent-Teacher Interviews
Towards the end of last term, we conducted Parent-Teacher Interviews. These were a very successful event and a great opportunity for parents to work in partnership with teachers. Between them, teachers conducted 64 interviews and a total of 76% of parents made interview appointments to discuss their children’s progress.
Mothers’ Day Stall
This year all the gifts for sale were due to the incredible generosity of our school families, demonstrating once again what a supportive and connected community we have here at Greenock Primary School. Parents, grandparents and staff donated an incredible range of items for sale, most of them lovingly and skilfully homemade. Our regular helpers (Amy, Danielle, Ash and Hannah) ensured that the stall ran smoothly and welcomed our new mum, Jen, into the fold for her first volunteering event at GPS.
I know all the mums and special ladies in our children’s lives will have been very happy to receive their gifts last Sunday morning.
Principal absence
Please note that I will be absent from school Tuesday 19th May until Friday 29th May, as I will be having eye surgery. During my absence, I have organised to ‘borrow’ Kate Pedersen from Evanston Gardens PS. Kate is the Deputy there and has much experience in acting Principal roles in a variety of schools. Please ‘look after’ Kate while I am gone and I look forward to seeing everyone when I get back.
