Mansfield Primary School Prep – Grade 2 Cross Country

On Tuesday 6th of June, Mansfield Primary School held their Prep - Grade 2 Cross Country. The whole event was organized by the 8 House Captains who organised the course layout and supported the runners throughout the day. The other Grade 6 students were all given jobs, such as helping students get to and from races, entertaining students while they waited and marshalling the course. The MPS Music Team also helped brighten the day by dressing up, cheering on and playing instruments.

Thankfully, the weather held off long enough and we were able to complete the event just as the rain started to sprinkle. The course took place around the main oval and Mansfield Primary School. There were six races held, and 1st -4th place students won a ribbon. While the runners did not know, the Year 6s were looking out for great sportsmanship and effort throughout the day. The Prep to 2’s were patient and well behaved while waiting for their race to start. The Preps ran 1.2km, and the Year 1’s and 2’s ran 2km. It was challenging work for most of them, but they gave it a go and tried their best. Thank you to the Year 6 students and MPS teachers for their help and support on the day. Well done to the students who participated and the students who won awards for sportsmanship and effort.

The Resilience Project

This next presentation fromThe Resilience Project is all about Empathy and Kindness.  Empathy is our ability to put ourselves in the shoes of others to feel and see what they do. We practice this through being kind and compassionate towards other people. Brain imaging data shows that being kind to others registers in the brain as more like eating chocolate than like fulfilling an obligation to do what’s right (e.g., eating brussel sprouts)! Research shows that practicing empathy, such as performing acts of kindness, taps into our brain’s ‘mirror neurons’, builds compassion and our behaviour becomes more social and community-based. View Part 3 of the series here: Part 3 - Empathy:https://theresilienceproject.com.au/2023-parent-carer-hub-inspire-hugh/

Here’s an activity to practise empathy and kindness:

  • Reflect on someone in your life who could benefit from an act of kindness today. It could be a friend who would love some affirmation about their work, your pet who deserves an extra treat, or a family member who would love a phone call or text message.
  • Make a plan for who you are going to give an act of kindness to, and what you are going to do.
  • If you want to add accountability to your plan, share it with someone else and encourage them to do the same thing.
  • Follow up with each other in a few days time, to ask how it went!
