Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Student-led Conferences

Student-led Conferences were held on Wednesday. Thank you to all of the students and parents who came along to explore the great work our primary school students do. Thanks also to the teachers for ensuring the students were well prepared for the conferences.

Written Expression Exam and National Exam Preparation and Remedial

Next week our Grade 10 students will sit their Written Expression Exam. Thank you to Ms Yip for preparing the students so well; they are more than ready. We wish our students all the very best for this important test.

This term we are continuing our after-school remedial lessons for selected students from grades 8 and 10 on Monday and Tuesday afternoons. We are also continuing our Saturday morning National Exam Program for all Gr 8 and 10 students from 8:30 – 10:30am. Please note students must be on time and attendance is compulsory.

School Production Preparation

School Production rehearsals are continuing and students are excited about polishing their performances, ready to present to family and community on Wednesday 10 June. Primary students will leave early on that day, to return to get ready at school. Our High School students will also be welcoming members of the Newmont Board during that afternoon and will only have a short break at home. More details regarding times will be communicated to parents next week.

Athletics Carnival

The Athletics Carnival will be held on Thursday 11 June. Field events will be held on Thursday morning (for years 1 - 10). Twilight track events will be held at 4pm on Thursday 11 June, followed by a sausage sizzle. All students will go home after the field events (approximately 12.00pm) and return at 3.30pm, ready for the track events. All parents, friends and wantoks are encouraged to attend and support their child/children's house.

If any parents can assist with the field events in the morning from 8:30am – 12:00pm please let myself or Miss Judith know. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

We are building a culture of Wellbeing at our school!

The Model of Wellbeing

The “Model of Wellbeing”  diagram is a set of interconnected layers that build resilience and promote overall wellbeing.

At the centre is “Emotional Literacy” — the ability to understand and manage emotions. This is the foundation of wellbeing.

Key wellbeing skills (middle layer)

Surrounding emotional literacy are three core practices:

  • Gratitude (appreciating positives)
  • Empathy (understanding others)
  • Mindfulness (being present and aware)

Personal and social development (next layer)

These skills support broader outcomes:

  • Authenticity (being true to yourself)
  • Connection (relationships with others)
  • Self-esteem (confidence and self-worth)

Together, all of these:

  • Enhance resilience (ability to cope with challenges)
  • Promote wellbeing

Healthy habits feed into the whole model, reinforcing each layer.

We are committed to enhancing the wellbeing of our students at Lihir International School!

Parent Reading Support!

Thank you to our wonderful parents who are helping with reading in our primary classes. If any other parents would like to help by listening to children read, please see/contact your child's teacher. Reading is usually done at the start of each day, Tuesday - Thursday.

Student folios

A kind reminder to please return your child’s portfolio if you have not already done so. Teachers will add term 2 assessment tasks into folios and they will be sent home at the end of term.

TRP – The Resilience Project

Students continue to have TRP lessons every Wednesday, where activities focus on Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness and Emotional Literacy. In this week's toksave, we have an included a diagram and explanation of the Model of Wellbeing.  The model shows that wellbeing starts with emotional literacy, is strengthened through gratitude, empathy, and mindfulness, and leads to stronger self-esteem, relationships, and authenticity—ultimately building resilience and overall wellbeing.

We encourage all of our families to read through the explanation of the Model of Wellbeing and ask your children about the types of activities they are doing at school to enhance their wellbeing.

Ball Raffle Tickets

A kind reminder to please return your tickets and money to the office once raffle tickets have been sold. There is a prize for two students (one girl and one boy) who sell the most tickets! Thank you to our P&W and our community for your wonderful support of our school. There are lots of great prizes to be won - please see the P&W notice in this toksave!

Parent Reading Support / Online Reading - Reading Eggs

Every child reading every day is something we strongly believe in at LIS. Reading sets students up for future success. We ask that parents in the lower primary classes find time to listen to your child read every day and that parents of older students monitor that your child is reading.

Primary students have access and logons for the online reading program - Reading Eggs. Students can complete reading activities on Reading Eggs when at home if they have access to Internet and a device. Please contact your child's teacher if you need logon details.

If any parents would like to assist with listening to primary students read, please contact your child’s teacher. Thankyou to our parents who are already helping with reading.

Kind regards,

Ms Langusch.
