A FEW WORDS FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Families

Next week we start our parent – teacher – student learning discussions. This is an important time where learning progress and achievement is shared and plans are made to close learning gaps or extend the learning during the second semester.

You may see or hear some of the following characteristics that define an effective learner at the upcoming learning discussions. Together with your child and their class teacher, focus may be directed on being an effective learner for further development and growth.

Effective Learners Set Clear Goals

Specific, achievable goals help target the learning, which provides direction and engagement. Whether it's mastering a new skill or understanding a complex concept, having clear goals helps students focus their efforts.

Effective Learners Embrace Curiosity

Curiosity drives learning. Effective learners are inquisitive, asking questions and seek to understand the "why" and "how" behind the learning. Curiosity leads to deeper engagement and a more profound grasp of learning.

Effective Learners Practice Metacognition & Self-Regulation

As mentioned in our previous newsletter, Effective learners think deeply about their learning. They plan, monitor, and evaluate learning processes, allowing them to adjust strategies and improve outcomes. Self-regulation involves managing emotions, thoughts, and behaviours for learning. Effective learners stay organised, manage their time well, and remain focused on their tasks. They are resilient, persisting through challenges and setbacks.

Effective Learners Seek Feedback

Feedback is a valuable tool for growth. Effective learners actively seek feedback from teachers and peers to understand their strengths and areas for improvement. They view feedback as an opportunity to enhance their learning.

Effective Learners Collaborate with Others

Learning is often a social activity. Effective learners collaborate with classmates, sharing ideas and learning from diverse perspectives. This collaboration fosters communication skills and enriches the learning experience.

Effective Learners Self-Reflect on their Learning

Reflection is a powerful practice. Effective learners regularly reflect on what they have learned and how they have learned it. This reflection helps consolidate knowledge and informs future learning strategies.

Supporting Effective Learning at Home

You can support your child's development as an effective learner by encouraging these habits at home. Engage in discussions about their goals, encourage curiosity, and provide opportunities for reflection. Celebrate their successes and guide them through challenges with patience and understanding.

A FEW WORDS FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

Dear families,

In the dynamic realm of early childhood education, Kathleen (DfE Literacy Coach) and I are collaborating closely with early years teachers to leverage data in enhancing literacy outcomes. Our approach is centred on analysing student data to identify patterns and trends in literacy development. This enables us to work alongside teachers, tailoring teaching methods to meet the unique needs of each student. The result is a noticeable increase in student engagement and enthusiasm for literacy activities, as they feel more supported and understood. By integrating data into daily routines, we are not only improving literacy skills but also fostering a genuine love for reading and writing among young learners.

A significant aspect of our collaboration is the identification of students who may benefit from additional support. Through careful data analysis, we can quickly identify those who require intervention, allowing for timely and targeted assistance. This proactive approach ensures that interventions are effective and that students receive the help they need to succeed. Working together, Kathleen and I empower teachers with the tools and knowledge to make informed decisions, creating a responsive learning environment where students thrive. As literacy rates improve, we are laying a strong foundation for lifelong learning, setting students on a path to success.

Hallett Cove East Primary School (HCEPS) has recently been recognised for its outstanding literacy intervention program, setting a benchmark for educational excellence. Our innovative approach has not only improved literacy outcomes for our students but has also attracted attention from other schools eager to replicate our success. Next week, we are proud to host visiting staff from another school, where SSO Janelle will lead a training session to share our strategies and insights. This initiative highlights HCEPS's role as a leader in literacy education, demonstrating our commitment to fostering a collaborative educational community and inspiring others to achieve similar success.

Kind regards,

Robyn Physick

A FEW WORDS FROM THE STUDENT WELLBEING LEADER

Due to Ellie Burford beginning her maternity leave a little earlier than anticipated, I’ve stepped into the Student Wellbeing Leader role this week. It’s been a lovely first couple of days settling in, and I’m incredibly grateful for the warm welcome from staff, students, and families I’ve connected with so far.

One particular highlight this week was attending the Performing Arts concert on Wednesday. It was such a joy to see the creativity, talent, and confidence on display—and even more special to witness how much pride and enjoyment the students took in performing. Events like this really highlight the vibrant learning culture at HCEPS and the dedication of staff who work so hard to provide these enriching opportunities for students.

Over the coming weeks, I’m looking forward to meeting more of you and visiting classrooms to continue building connections with students across all year levels.

Warm regards,

Katrina Leucuta

A few words from the Autism Inclusion Teacher

To support the diverse needs of students in becoming effective learners, the teachers at HCEPS have been revisiting and reflecting on the Iceberg Model of Behaviour. This theory explains how the behaviours we see a person display is usually connected to many reasons. Sometimes, it is not so clear what those reasons are, and it can take a bit of time to figure that out. Whether your child is neurodivergent or neurotypical, understanding the underlining causes of their behaviour can be hugely beneficial for them and yourself.

The following short video from Ambitious about Autism provides further explanation to this model.

LIGHTHOUSE LEADERS NEWS

Effective Learners at Hallett Cove East PS:

This term light-house leaders have worked with Mr Chapman to collect data from Years R-6 about their knowledge on effective learners. This is the data we collected: We found out that 70% of students are either on the right track or have a strong understanding of being an Effective Learner at Hallett Cove East Primary School. Students told us that they learn best when working with a partner or by themselves. They also like small group work, because they can build on others' ideas. Children have said that the following things help them come to school: They love to learn new things and have challenges in learning. They love to have a safe environment to work in, they love coming to school to see their friends and lastly, they love to discover new things in Japanese and art. Of course, they love recess and lunch!

What some students said about being an effective learner:

“Being a good friend and helping others, trying my best in subjects and being engaged in my learning.” (Year 4)

“An effective learner is someone who is curious, listens, explores and takes on challenges.”(Year 5)

“Someone who is on task, someone who is paying attention and trying their best.” (Year 6)

An effective learner is someone who engages into class conversations and is confident and motivated in class and being a helpful learner who helps others with their work and strives for the best they can accomplish. (Year 6)

“Make good choices, Be kind to others, Do their work well.” (Reception)

SAPSASA Sport

There have been a few students across the school that have got into district SAPSASA teams lately.

  • Mason and Kyson got into the district football team.
  • Matilda got into the district netball team.

They played three days of non-stop sports and really enjoyed their experience!

School Sports

On Thursday of week 7, 12 students went to play School Netball in a knockout competition. The students were Isla, Madie, Matilda, Macy, Annie, Elsie, Hannah, Scarlett G, and Scarlett W, Izzy, Everly and Jasmine. The team won against Seaford Rise Primary School by 10 points, they lost against Woodcroft Primary School by 1 point and lost against Emmaus Christian College by 12 points. They did an amazing job and came 2nd on the day.

What else is on this term?

This term we have another knockout school sport, soccer! We have the girls’ team and the boys’ team. This is happening on Wednesday and Thursday of week 9 and they will be facing other schools in knockout soccer. Games will be played at Hallett Cove East Primary School

We have a Japanese quiz day coming up this term for the year 5’s and 6’s. They will get to go to Sheidow Park Primary School and compete in a Japanese quiz. We hope they have a lot of fun.

Our year 3’s and 4’s had an exciting excursion on Tuesday week 8, they went to the Maritime Museum in Port Adelaide.

Fundraisers

On Friday of week 7 we had a pyjama day! Students had to bring a gold coin donation if they wore pyjamas. There were lots of cool pyjamas that people wore. From everyone bringing a gold coin donation and wearing pyjamas, they raised $350 in total!

The Charity Champions had a fundraiser for Hutt street centre that gives food to the people less fortunate. Children all around the school have been bringing in cans of food and non-perishable items for us to donate. Later this term we will hear from the Hutt Street Centre about their work and the importance of our fundraising efforts.

Music

During week 8 we had a Music performance with older students playing instruments and younger students singing. Some songs like “Toffe apple,” “Coconut banana”, “Tabanana”, “Music is for everyone” and others were included. Keep an eye out on Class Dojo for your class item. Thank you to Mrs Stanfield for making this happen and for bringing such an exciting performance opportunity through music to our school.

SAPSASA News

In week 5, Mason Irving and Kyson Hornhardt participated in the State Boys Football Carnival, representing Southern Valley in the Division 2 Competition. In trying conditions the team was able to win 4 games and finished equal 4th. Well done boys.

Congratulations to Oscar C, Kaden L, Noah H, Marley V and Zahlia B who competed in the State Cross Country Championships for Southern Valley at the Oakbank Racecourse on the 5th of June. There were over 2500 competitors across the different categories. All put in a great effort with a top 20 finish for Oscar.

Last week our Girls Knockout Netball team played against Woodcroft PS, Seaford Rise PS and Emmaus at Woodcroft Primary. They played really well for a team that had just come together and had one great win. Thanks to Mr Charlton who coached the team and the parents who volunteered to transport and score on the day.

More news on the Netball front, congratulations to Matilda D who represented Southern Valley in the Girl’s Netball Team at the State Carnival this week.
