Term 4 Week 4 Newsletter - Friday 3 November 2023

PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS

Messages from Mr Ackerman

Prefect Elections

This week has been another busy one for our Year 5 cohort. As part of their leadership training, students have spoken to students in Year 3, 4 and 5 and then been voted in for 2024. My congratulations to the ten successful prefects. Thanks also to all candidates who put themselves forward to have a chance. This is not an easy thing to do and takes courage. Well done to all of you for putting your hand up. Thanks also to Ms Page for coordinating this important event. More details can be found later in this newsletter.

Thank You Morning Tea

We would like to say thank you to all of our parent volunteers for the wonderful contribution you have made to the life of Drummoyne Public School throughout 2023.

To do this, we request the pleasure of your company at a special Thank You Morning Tea, to be held in the school hall on Friday 1 December 2023 at 11.15am. To RSVP, please advise the administration office.

Dogs onsite

Whilst many of us are dog people and we love having them around, a reminder that under the Companions Animals Act 1998, dogs are prohibited on school grounds unless the Principal grants permission. If you have a dog and bring them to pick up at 3.20pm please talk to your child about coming out to meet you at the gates. Carrying a dog is still prohibited, they are not to be on school grounds. Thank you for your support in this matter.

FROM THE DEPUTY'S DESK

Safety after school

I would like to remind families that there is no supervision of students after the 3.20pm school bell in the afternoon including of the South Street playground area. Students are asked to wait quietly for parents and not to play on equipment. It is a ‘waiting time, not a 'playing time’.

Request for documents

If during the year, families receive documents such as Court Orders, reports from health care professionals and the like, please provide a copy to the office so that we can stay up to date with any changes to your child’s circumstances.

Class of the Week - 2O

Class 2O thoroughly enjoyed writing the sequel to David Walliam's 'The World's Worst Children'. We created new characters like Snotty Sam, Ugly Ursula, Naughty Nit and Sacia the Stealer and detailed their absolutely atrocious antics.

"I loved this task because I enjoyed typing on the computer and changing the fonts just like David Walliams did." - Aria W

"I liked how we made our own World's Worst Children and we got to do typing  on a computer." - Ari S

"I liked how I got to read it to my parents and my sister because we all got a copy to take home." - Macy T

"I liked drawing my Naughty Nit character and I loved changing the fonts on the laptops." - Luke L

Principal's Awards and Principal's Badges

Students receive values certificates from their teachers throughout the year for demonstrating our values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience.

Once a student receives 5 values certificates, they are able to trade them in at the school office for a Principal's Award.  The 5 values certificates can be a combination of the 3 school values and come from any year the student has been in.

Once the student has received 3 Principal's Awards, they can bring those 3 awards to the school office and choose their Principal's Badge from one of the 3 values.

HELPING YOUR CHILD WITH THE NEW CURRICULUM

Effective teacher feedback

During Term 3 and 4 I have been working closely with Mrs Mavrakis (2M) and Ms Walsh (KW) to trial a professional learning cycle for the high impact strategy ‘effective teacher feedback’.

Teacher feedback about student learning is essential for students and integral to teaching, learning and assessment. When this feedback is effective, it enables students to recognise their strengths as well as areas for development, and to identify and plan with their teacher the next steps in their learning.

To assist with effective feedback, we have been using ‘learning intentions and success criteria’ to guide the feedback and strengthen students' understanding of where their strengths and areas for development might be. Learning intentions clarify the purpose of the learning and form the basis for assessment. Success Criteria are the measures used to determine whether, and how well, learners have met the learning intentions.

Below are some class displays of ‘learning intentions and success criteria’ and student work samples as a result of students using those displays and responding to effective feedback from teachers during our trial professional learning cycle.

Requests from students to debit parents school24 account will not be accepted.

If a student does not have any lunch, they will be required to tell their teacher. The teacher will provide an Emergency Pink Lunch Voucher which the student brings to the canteen. Canteen fills in with lunch that was provided along with the cost. The bottom of form is given to the student to take home to the parent. Payment can be cash sent in with student or debit from school24 account. If payment has not been made within a week, we will contact you with a reminder.

It is a good idea to have $10-$20 in account for emergencies. An email will be sent if any mishaps occur and reason for debit via email. If you wish to avoid the credit card charge each time you order ( there is a $0.30 charge each time you order with a credit card ), it is best to put a good amount of money in account ( depending on how many children and how many times you order each week ) eg, $30, $50 or more. This way when you order it uses money in account and no credit charge.

    Volunteers needed

The canteen urgently needs more volunteers. If you can spare even a few hours each month, please consider volunteering.
