Burton Primary School Newsletter

Term 2, Week 1 2024

From the Principal

Dear Families,

Welcome back to term 2. We hope you had a joyful break and enjoyed time with your children, while taking advantage of some of the dry weather we had.

Some families would have noticed that two surveys were shared at the end of term 1. We are aiming to gain parent perspectives on Burton Primary School and our new school values. Collaboratively working alongside our families when implementing whole-school change is important, so we are seeking genuine input in these areas. Currently, we have 6 responses for both and, in hope that one final push may help to receive some more to support with our decision making, we have included the QR codes below.

Uniforms

As we move through the year, we understand that school uniform gets damaged, lost and out-grown, but at Burton PS our uniform helps to create a sense of pride and promotes our school value of Inclusion. It also ensures our students are easily identifiable during their journey to and from school. Could you please ensure that your children follow our uniform policy, where the expectation is that students wear:

  • Plain navy blue, grey, burgundy, turquoise or black bottoms (shorts, track pants, long pants, cargo style pants, skorts, skirts). Navy denim jeans are acceptable providing they are not torn or heavily embroidered etc.

  • Burgundy and turquoise polo t-shirts (short & long sleeved)

  • Turquoise or burgundy jumper

  • Year 6 students have the option of purchasing a specially printed jumper

  • Burgundy check dress

Information

For your information, I will be on Long Service Leave from 9th May – 22nd May as I am travelling back to the UK. During this time, Maria Appelt will be leading the school in her Deputy Principal role.

School hours

Please be reminded that school starts at 8:45am (gates open at 8:30am) and finishes at 3:05pm. It is important that students attend for the entirety of the school day. Early dismissal or late arrival needs to go through the Front Office. Reasons for these need to be provided to the class teacher and/or office as soon as possible.

Hats

During term 2, hats are not a requirement during lunch and recess as per our Sun Smart Policy, however, we do encourage them to be kept at school as the UV rating has been over 3 during the last few weeks.

M&S Charges

First of all thank you to those families who have already paid or are part paying their Children’s M&S Charges for 2024 – without these payments your child’s learning can be severely compromised due to lack of resources etc.

Room 6

In Room 6 we have gotten in touch with our feelings through Kimochis®. The word Kimochi (KEY.MO.CHEE) means ‘feelings’ in Japanese. The program is taught along with plush character toys that carry feeling pillows inside. Each week we spend 2 lessons focusing on understanding a specific feeling or social skill. We spend time reading stories and sharing about our thoughts and feelings. Room 6 can connect with them and find strategies to cope and manage their own feelings. By engaging in the program, each child can connect, communicate, create and commit to building a strong social world. Kimochis are not just a toy but rather a tool to manage big feelings and bring more positivity to children's life. Room 6 have enjoyed using Kimochis to build their social and emotional skills.

SAPSASA Term 1

Our Boys and Girls Teams travelled to Argana Park to play in the Para District SAPSASA carnival on Friday 5th April . The students have dedicated the lunch times for over 6 weeks in the lead up to this carnival training every Wednesday lunchtime.  Our Boys Football finished the day in 4th place with 1 win, 2 losses and a draw.  Girls doing exceptionally well finishing 2nd overall with 5 wins and 1 loss. Mrs Vega and I are proud of the student’s commitment and dedication the students have shown to their sport.

Student report:

This year Burton Primary did really well in Netball SAPSASA. We ended the day with 5 wins and one loss. The girls all played really well as a team and tried their hardest. The team thought we did really well and couldn’t be happier with the results. Thanks for Mrs Vega for being a great coach.
