Class of the Week

Science

Students in Early Stage 1 have been exploring the way objects move and have been investigating push and pull forces. They have enjoyed lots of hands-on lessons using different objects that can move by pushing, pulling, sliding and rolling.

Students in Stage 1 have been conducting investigations with different objects and exploring how materials can be physically changed through the actions of bending, stretching and twisting. They all had a great time manipulating pizza dough, cloud dough, salt dough and play dough.

Students in Stage 2 have been investigating the Earth’s relationship with the Sun and how the rotation of the Earth on its axis causes regular changes, including night and day and the pattern of the seasons. They all had fun creating and participating in a ‘Khoot’ quiz using their knowledge and research about the Sun to formulate and answer multiple choice questions.

Students in Stage 3 have been designing, testing and evaluating the use of electricity in a small model house. Their lessons this term have involved building knowledge of electrical circuits and using creativity and problem-solving skills to construct some incredible light up house designs.

Year 6 Fundraiser

Quick note to say a massive THANK YOU to everyone who came along last Friday night. The event was a lot of fun and there were some great times.

Due to the many generous donations from local businesses and community minded generosity we were collectively able to raise $5000 for the school. Hopefully this will be put to good use with many of the planned initiatives such as cool water drinking fountains or school hall air conditioning.

Enormous thanks again to the Caves Beach SLSC who were incredible hosts, Warren "The Auctioneer" Liackmen, Stewin' the Rabbit for keeping the party going, the other Parent Organising Committee members and to Daisy who was instrumental in pulling the night together.

Over to you current Year 5 parents. I can't wait until next year's event.

Grow Your Mind

Another strength you can grow is HELPFULNESS.

Being helpful means to think of ways we can be of benefit in the classroom, on the playground or at home.

When we show HELPFULNESS we use our SENSITIVE OCTOPUS and

WISE OWL. This strength is important for our mental health because we feel rewarded and happy when we help someone.

 You can display HELPFULNESS by:

  • looking for opportunities to be useful; for example holding the door open for someone if they are carrying something
  • not waiting to be asked to help; such as lending a pencil to a friend if they have forgotten theirs

Set yourself a ‘Be of Benefit’ challenge today!

Learning and Support

Getting To Know You - Q&A

Pei Ling Chensee - Learning and Support Teacher

Tell us something about yourself

I have been at CBPS for the last 3 years as LaST. Before CBPS, I had been teaching at Swansea PS as class teacher and Learning and Support Teacher. I love my chai teas since coming back from India after a teacher exchange program in 2019. I continue to keep in touch with my partner teacher from Chennai and it is exciting to know that our school is in partnership with her since 2020. I would recommend the best beach for walking is from Caves Beach to Munmorah SRA along the coastal track with stunning wildflowers and spectacular coastline.

What does a typical day look like as  LaST?

I read with small groups of students in the morning. We reread familiar texts to improve our fluency, expression and phrasing. We use consonant diagraphs to build and write word families and patterns and learn how to read unfamiliar and unknown words.  I have maths groups in the middle session where students work at their individual goals and our activities support class teaching. Students get to practice their maths skills and knowledge in small groups. Spelling and writing groups meet with me in the afternoon.

How do we support our child who is receiving support from you?

Regular school attendance is essential for students to achieve quality learning outcomes during additional learning support. If your child’s attendance is less than 90% per term, this may impact their learning and learning support will be reviewed. Your partnership is important to ensure your child is attending school as students receive daily learning and support from specialist teachers and SLSOs. Learning and work samples from my small groups are usually posted in class Seesaw and you can always call me for a meeting to chat or get in contact with the class teacher.

Band  - Week 8 update

This is the last update for the year! A huge thank you to all families for the support and commitment to the band program in 2023, it has been an absolutely amazing year and the band students have shown huge progression. It has shaped up to be the most "normal" year of band we have had since 2019, it has been pleasing to be back to doing all the regular gigs the band is historically use to doing!

We have a few events this week and next and then band will wrap up for the year. Please read the following information carefully as there as some changes to rehearsals before the year is done.

Band Presentation Night - This Week!

SAVE THE DATE!!!

Exciting term 1 news already!!!

Band camp has been booked in for Wednesday 27th and Thursday 28th March!!! We will be heading back to the same venue at Rathmines and will follow a similar program to the camp run this year.

This is a return to our regular camp time in term 1 which allows us to consolidate our bands playing early in the year.

A deposit will be due in the first few weeks of term 1 and final payments by week 7 of term 1. It is predicted that the cost will be $150 for overnight campers and $115 for day trippers.

Year 2 students are day trippers and all other students are overnight campers regardless of whether they are junior or senior band players. At the start of term 1 all the training band students will be referred to as Junior band, so this camp is for all our new players too!

Music tutors

Please ensure you contact your child's tutor if they are unable to attend a scheduled lesson. There are  a few tutors adding new days and times to work around school events and new student numbers, thank you tutors and families for being flexible!

Each tutor has a different end time for this term, please contact them directly if you need clarification of lesson day and times.

New Band members

Training band has enjoyed a wonderful start to band rehearsals and tutor lessons over the past few weeks. If your child is looking at continuing in band in 2024 they are welcome to keep their hired instrument over the holidays. If they are not continuing please return the instrument to the band room by Tuesday week 10.

Fees are now displayed in the school bytes system for new members. We will continue to add new students as they join.

For anyone else wanting to sign up, the school has almost exhausted its collection of instruments for hire! There is still 1 trombone, a french horn and 3 saxophones available.

These instruments will be available from term 1 2024 to hire.

If you have your own instrument you are very welcome to sign up at any time from the start of term 1, 2024.

Fees - 2023 Junior and Senior Band - members from all of 2023 school year.

Fees for term 4 are now due:

Individual reminders were sent home a few weeks ago for those families who are not up to date with fees for 2023.

It is very important that fees are up to date for 2023 as the band will transition to a new payment procedure in 2024.

From 2024 all band fees will be collected through the school office and school bytes system to stream line payments.

Senior band - $65

Junior Band - $55

Yearly instrument hire fee - $100 - only for members who hire from the school and take the instrument home - clarinets, flutes, trumpets, saxophones, trombones, bass guitar.

Please use your child's name as the reference, eg ScottT1fees

Example of fees for term :

Junior band member playing the clarinet and hiring from the school. Term 1 fees: $55 plus instrument hire fee for 2023 of $100. Total $155.

An instrument hire fee is only payable once per year. Please ignore if you paid.

Library News

Library News

It has been such a wonderful year in the library and I have been so pleased to see the enthusiasm of our students for reading, especially our Kindergarten students who have been so diligent about borrowing every week.

As the end of the year zooms closer, please watch out for notes advising you that your child has an overdue book. We would like all books back safely in the library before end-of-year stocktake starts. Borrowing has concluded for the year.

This year we had 244 students complete the Premier’s Reading Challenge. I would like to congratulate all those students for their participation. Of the 244 students, 43 will receive their Gold Certificate for completing 4 Challenges.

Online orders for Scholastic Book Club are due no later than 1 December. Thanks for your support.
