A message from Clare

Good afternoon Families and Friends,

Welcome to Term Four. It’s so lovely to have the good weather coming through, to see the children wearing their summer uniform and to see the garden bursting with new growth and blooms.

Our big focus at the moment is our upcoming St Luke the Evangelist Feast Day next Friday, our Art Show AND our Fete. Now that’s a WOW WEEK! Please join us at all of these events as it really does give the opportunity to showcase the very rich community we are and have here in Blackburn South.

On Friday, we have a very special day of Joy as we celebrate the Feast day of St Luke the Evangelist. We would love as many families as possible to join us at mass, to come visit us in our classrooms and to join us for morning tea. The children will be engaging in some activities about St Luke before the full on fun with Kaboom Sports after recess. A very special part of our day will be when our current House Leaders: Will, Tia and Emily (Staunton), Thomas, Lenny and April (D’Prazer) and Max and Mason (Egan) will officially launch the House names with their namesakes present at mass.

Next week will be very busy setting up our Discovery Centre for the Art Show. Our budding artists are working away at creating many masterpieces under the guidance and expertise of our teachers. As part of our feast day celebrations, we will be launching our Art Show at 3 pm. You are warmly invited to come into the Discovery Centre from 3pm-4pm to have a sneak preview of the Art Show. We’ll leave it open until 4 pm for families to have a wander through. On Sunday at the fete, you can have another wander through, maybe with grandparents, relatives and friends in tow. We’ll be asking for a gold coin donation per person on entry so make sure you have those coins ready.

SURPRISE GUEST ARTIST: Stay tuned for a surprise guest artist who will be performing on the fete stage at 2pm!

The week ahead is all about community. When l looked at definitions for the word, l found in Oxford Languages

community (/kəˈmjuːnɪti/)

  • a group of people living together and practising common ownership AND

  • a similarity or identity OR

  • joint ownership or liability.

Community, in its most basic definition, can be defined as individuals who share a common interest, background or purpose that gives them a sense of cohesion. The 5 community characteristics that most influenced community attachment (in order of importance) were: social offerings, openness, aesthetics, education, and basic services. (https://extension.psu.edu/what-makes-the-good-community). As a community of faith, of families and of learners, we offer so much to each other. I am grateful each and every day l walk into this community. Thank You.

Have a great weekend ahead and l look forward to seeing you next week.

Mini Vinnies: Catholic Mission Month

Dear Parents and Carers,

This October is Catholic Mission month. Catholic Mission supports children, communities and Church leaders around the world, particularly those in developing countries, who are experiencing challenges.

Each year, St. Luke’s raises money for this Mission through Socktober.

Mini Vinnies will be promoting the event which will be held on Friday 25th of October.

Our Mini Vinnies team will be making ‘sock balls’ to get an understanding of how soccer is played in many developing countries supported by Catholic Mission.

To make these balls, we are asking for donations of recycled materials such as:

    • Old (clean) socks - we all have odd socks in our drawers!

    • Old t-shirts

    • Bubble wrap

    • Material string

    • Plastic bags

The students can drop these items off in 3/4 Sage’s classroom. They will need to be at school by Tuesday 22nd of October.

Thank you so much for your support!

Mini Vinnies and Socktober - Friday 25th of October

Each year, St. Luke’s raises money for this Mission through Socktober.

Our Mini Vinnies team will be fundraising for this initiative for the people of Mongolia on Friday 25th of October

We are asking that all students and staff wear their craziest pair (or odd pair!) of socks and bring in a gold coin donation. There might even be a prize for the most creative / unique pair of socks. Please don’t buy new socks - get creative with the ones you already have!

We will start the day with prayer at 9am in the Discovery Centre - all are welcome to join us.

Term 4 Summer Uniforms

We should now be wearing the summer uniform.

Please apply sunscreen in the morning before school.

Term 4 = SUNHATS!

Please make sure your child has a school hat to wear EVERY DAY or else,
No hat, No play.

Connected Through Diversity

As discussed in our last newsletter, this term we will be exploring neurodiversity and how we can better understand, support, and celebrate each member of our community. This newsletter item will focus on ADHD

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder): A person with ADHD has a different brain development and a different brain chemistry compared to their neurotypical peers, and therefore someone with ADHD will have differences in attention, hyperactivity, and/or impulsiveness. ‘Someone with ADHD might have a brain that is quick and curious, noticing lots of things around them. They might find it tough to sit still. This can make them great at exploring and coming up with creative ideas’. - All Brains are Different, Teacher’s Guide

Don’t mistake ADHD strengths for symptoms! Being energetic, creative, caring and spontaneous are great traits to have. Everyone needs to learn how to best utilise their strengths.

Kelly Club - School Closure Day program Monday 04 November 2024

2025 ENROLMENTS

We are very keen to accept enrolments now and don’t want anyone missing out. If you know someone who is looking to enrol their child in Prep for 2025 or in other year levels, please encourage them to book a tour and have a chat with me.

School Housekeeping

LOST PROPERTY:

Please check the lost property cupboard in the office foyer if you are missing uniform or food containers.

Term 4 SUMMER UNIFORMS:

In term 4 we change over to the summer uniform as the weather warms up.  During the transition to warmer weather please make sure your child has his/her school jumper.

Children are reminded to wear hats and are encouraged to bring their own sunscreen.  Children not wearing hats are required to play in the shaded areas of the Middle playground (near the hill) as we adhere to a NO HAT- NO PLAY policy.  Please ensure that your child's hat is named and packed in their bag for use during the day.

CHILDREN ARRIVING AFTER THE BELL OR LEAVING EARLY:

As part of our wellbeing care of children at St Luke's, every class engages in a morning routine at 8.50 am.  This quiet, calm time allows children to gather together in a circle, to greet each other by name, to pray and/or enter into some Christian meditation and get ready for the day.  Please make sure you allow enough time to get your child to school BEFORE 8.50 am.

If children arrive after the gate and student entry doors are locked, parents/carers are required to walk their child/ren to the school office and sign them in on the VPass iPad.

If leaving early (before the end of the day), parents/carers are required to sign their child/ren out on the VPASS iPad.

FOOD ALLERGIES:

Allergic reactions to food… can be harmful to our children. For that reason we ask parents to think carefully about what they are packing in their child’s lunch boxes. Occasionally, something might slip through and once aware, we take precautions to ensure the safety of every child. As stated in the Family Handbook 2024:

We are an EGG and NUT free school due to the allergies of children within our community.  We ask that parents respect this request and the potential harm this could do to children if brought to school.

Thank you for your care and attention to this.

RIDING TO AND FROM SCHOOL SAFELY

Children are vulnerable to head injuries and should wear a standard approved bicycle helmet whenever they ride a bike or scooter.

In Victoria, children under the age of 12 may ride on footpaths. They are required to give way to pedestrians and to wheel their bicycles over pedestrian and children’s crossings.

Children aged 12 years or older are required by law to ride on the road.

SMART WATCHES & MOBILE PHONES

If a child wears a smart watch to school, it must be de-activated so the child is not receiving or sending messages etc...

Mobile Phones and smart watches are requested to be left at the office in the morning and collected at the end of the day.
