Important Diary Dates

From the Principal

Hi all,

There has been a lot going on this term and we still have lots to get through as we near the end of the 2023 school year.

Teaching And Learning

Classes are still working hard on their teaching programs despite the fact that teachers are also in the midst of report writing at this time of year. In Maths classes are working on the final units of work for the term which is focusing on Addition & Subtraction in R/1, Money in Year 2 and Chance in years 3 - 6.

Last Friday I was invited to join the Upper classes in their Poetry Cafe where the students all shared their poems and enjoyed a hot chocolate at the same time! It was a great example of the strong literacy practice at the school as well as an opportunity for us to lean into values and talk about being brave, respectful and creative (to name but 3 examples)

Across the curriculum classes are working with Marsha on their Concert item, getting ready to do Christmas cookies in German and the Uppers are heading off to a Rugby Tag competition with Mr Ellis whilst organising their Market Day stalls - the learning never stops !!

Classes for 2024

We are in the process of finalising our classes for next year and have worked diligently to again balance the desires of students, the abilities, needs and behaviours of students and the opinion of teachers.

Letters indicating which class your child is in will be sent home towards the end of term (week 8 or 9).

Transition - our Kindy to School program is in full swing and our Kindy students all seem eager and confident about coming to school. Kirsty and Mandy have provided lovely environments and activities for the students and we have all been excited to meet new families as well as the li'l brothers and sisters of those we teach and have taught in the past.

If you have a child who is due to start next year and they have not yet come along, or you know of one, please get in touch with Karen Brook ASAP. Also, let us know if you child is starting mid-year. Here are the dates ou need to know:

If your child turns 5 years old:

  • before 1 May 2024 they can start reception in Term 1 2024.
  • between 1 May and 31 October 2024, they can start reception in Term 3 2024.
  • after 31 October 2024 they can start reception in Term 1 2025.

Workplace Health & Safety

If you enter the school or drop your child via the Bowling Club car park you will notice that the area has been cordoned off. This area is a trip hazard and we urge you to make sure that children do not enter this area. We are working on a solution however, we are working on a long-term solution rather than a 'quick fix' so this area will remain like this for a wee while longer.

School Accounts

Thank you to all of the families who responded to the letter from us asking for payment of outstanding school accounts. We have worked together to receive payments, apply for school card and set up payment arrangements.

The deadline for School Card applications is this Friday November 24th. School card is paid directly to the school so it is of great benefit to us. If you are yet to pay for this year and think that you are eligible, please contact Chelsea Marshall, Finance Officer, and she can help you with it. This will need to be done by close of business Thursday as Chelsea does not work on a Friday.

Wellbeing at NPS

Kiwanis and Walk A Mile In My Boots

You may remember a successful fundraiser Walk A Mile In My Boots which the Upper Primary classes completed in Term 2. This is to raise money for people affected by homelessness in South Australia via the Hutt Street Centre.

Recently the Kiwanis Barossa donated $300 to match our fundraising efforts. This is part of the many projects that the Kiwanis has and aims to support project undertaken in schools which is centred around the support of others less fortunate or those facing hardship.

Combined Primary Schools Concert 2023

On Friday November 17 the annual Barossa Valley Combined Primary Schools Concert Band Workshop took place. At the Nuriootpa Soldier’s Memorial Hall, the Nuriootpa and Kapunda High School music students joined forces to mentor primary school instrumental music students from Nuriootpa, Tanunda, Kapunda and Angaston Primary schools.

The students, ranging from year 5 to year 12, spent the morning preparing repertoire such as Funky Town, La Bamba, Smoke on the Water and Spiderman, for a concert. This super band of approximately 100 students performed 10 songs to an audience of around 200 people, which included our IEC students, only hours later.

The annual concert was organised and compered by DfE Instrumental Music Woodwind specialist Sonia Samain. Our team of IM teachers worked with these young musicians too, Jacob Staehr (Brass), Chris Yeend (Percussion/Drums), Tim Hogan (Guitar), Megan Fishers (Vocals)and NHS classroom music teachers Shelley Parker, Sarah Wensley and Noah Tilley. Classroom music teacher Carolyn Thorne joined us from Kapunda HS as did Tanunda PS Performing Arts teacher, Emily Hewitt and musician/NHS SSO, Sonya Abdelmalek. The Nuriootpa Staff Band “One Detention” also performed a Beatles classic ‘Got to Get you Into My Life’, as well as Burno Mars classic ‘Uptown Funk’ and one of the hits from the 2023 Barbie movie, ‘Dance the Night.’

Through this performance opportunity students gained the skills to perform in a much larger ensemble, grow their confidence on their instrument as well as meet new like- minded students/musicians.
