TOKSAVE - Week 6 Term 3 2024

Lihir International School and School to Mine Campus

Principal: Mr Kevin Collins

Deputy Principal LIS: Ms Catherine Langusch

Deputy Principal STM: Mr David Wengip

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

At LIS, through our reading programs we encourage children to read regularly at home. It is important for parents to assist and encourage children to read at home. Here's why it matters:

1. Academic Boost: Reading outside of school enhances vocabulary and comprehension, paving the way for better academic performance.

2. Lifelong Passion: Fostering a reading habit now instills a lifelong love for learning and discovery.

3. Cognitive Edge: Regular reading sharpens critical thinking, problem-solving and analytical skills.

4. Embracing Diversity: Books expose children to diverse cultures, nurturing empathy and understanding.

5. Concentration Skills: Amid digital distractions, reading improves focus and attention span.

6. Family Bonding: Shared reading creates special moments for bonding and meaningful conversations.

7. Igniting Creativity: Books spark imagination, enhancing creativity that extends to all aspects of life.

8. Stronger Language: Reading enhances language proficiency, benefiting communication skills.

By encouraging reading at home, you're laying a strong foundation for your children's success.

From the Deputy Principal (STM)

Our Batch 3 WR trainees participated in the Upstander and Trupla Meri, Trupla Man, (TMTM) trainings yesterday. The sessions were conducted by Ms. Alu Kila and Ms. Jermah Kambao.  Most students verbally expressed their satisfaction in the trainings. It was an eye opener for many of them as they did not have an opportunity to attend such trainings that involved challenging and confronting topics which are perceived as taboo to discuss at times or maybe perceived as acceptable in some societies & cultures. I know they all learned many new things and acquired knowledge and skills that they can be able to use in their villages and at their workplace.

We extend our gratitude and thank you to Ms. Alu Kila and Ms. Jermah Kambao for accepting our invitation to come and do presentations on Upstander and TMTM trainings. We appreciate your continuous support in our Work Ready program where we train young local Lihirian talents with skills, knowledge and attitudes in how to get a job and how to keep their jobs.

Next week, we will be looking at our Module on Interview skills, Curriculum Vitae and Job Application letter writing skills.  We expect to have a team from HR & Globe 24/7 to make presentations on additional sessions on these topics as well. These are very important and necessary life-long skills that the WR Trainees need to acquire so that they will apply them when searching for a job after the completion of their WR training program.

FODE

Students are continuing their studies at their own pace. NDOE Calander of events are observed and followed.

Year 10 upgraders sat for their mock exams this week and will continue next week. Eligible Year 10 upgraders are expected to sit for their National Exams later this year.

Remedial & Exam Preparation

Saturday morning exam preparation plus Monday and Tuesday Maths and English remedials are continuing.

 Kind regards,

Mr. David Wengip
