Principal's message

There have been many highlights over the 2024 school year, and one of the standout moments was our End of Year Concert held last week in the gym. It was a wonderful celebration of the talent and hard work of our students. A huge thank you to Mrs. James for coordinating the concert. These events require hours of planning, preparation, and practice, and I truly appreciate the immense amount of work she put into making the concert a success. Thank you also to our Fundraising and Marketing Committee for co-ordinating the pizza, drinks and ice blocks as well as the raffle!

Year 6 Graduation

On Wednesday night, the Year 6 class of 2024 marked the end of their Primary School journey with a memorable celebration. The graduation ceremony featured speeches from students, student performances and reflecting on the wonderful memories and accomplishments of the past years. Following the ceremony the students enjoyed a pizza dinner, table tennis and dancing! Congratulations to all our Year 6 students, we are proud of all that you have achieved and wish you all the best for your High School journey.

Volunteers

Thank you to all our amazing volunteers over the year. On Monday we celebrated our volunteers with a breakfast, and it was wonderful to have the opportunity to express our gratitude in person for all the time, energy, and support they have generously given throughout the year. Their contributions, whether in the classroom, at events, or behind the scenes, have made a significant difference. If you are interested in volunteering in 2025 please get in contact with Ailsa in the front office.

Farewells

Unfortunately, we say goodbye to valued members of our team at the end of 2024.Their contributions, dedication, and passion for our students have made a lasting impact, and they will be missed by the entire school community. We wish them all the best in your future endeavours and we are grateful for the time and energy they’ve invested in making our school a better place.

· Sharon Brightwell has been the Principal at LPS since 2020, we would like to thank her for her dedication and leadership during her time here. Mrs Brightwell has left a lasting impact, and her contributions have been invaluable to shaping Lockleys Primary School and have set a strong foundation for future growth and success.

· Katie Woollard has recently resigned from her position in the Front Office to continue her travels, we will miss the sunshine that she brings every day!

· Jane Betteley leaves us to take up a position at Nailsworth Primary School, she has done a wonderful job backfilling for Miss Jennings in Room 5 since the start of Term 3 and we will miss her laughter and amazing guitar playing!

· Kiran James has accepted a position at Salisbury Downs Primary School where she will be teaching Performing Arts, we thank her for her creativity and commitment to showcasing music and drama to our students this year.

· Julie Zhao has worked with us as an SSO this year, in particular supporting our international students and we wish her well in her new business ventures.

· James Vigus has accepted a full time position at Adelaide West Special Education Centre, we will miss the care and compassion that he shows to all of our students, staff and families.

· Mike Smith has worked tirelessly to maintain our school grounds, ensuring they are always welcoming and safe for students, staff, and visitors and we thank him for all his efforts. We wish him all the best in his retirement.

This is my last newsletter as Acting Principal, and I want to thank our wonderful school community—students, parents and staff. It has been an incredible experience stepping into this role, and I am truly thankful for the support, trust, and collaboration I have received from everyone. I have seen how committed everyone is to ensuring the best outcomes for our students, and I am proud to be part of such a dynamic community. However, as much as I’ve enjoyed this learning opportunity, I am also looking forward to returning to my role as Assistant Principal here at Lockleys in 2025.

I would like to wish all our families and staff a restful and enjoyable break. I hope you find time to relax, recharge, and create wonderful memories together. We look forward to welcoming back students to school on Tuesday 28th January 2025 under the new name of Brooklyn Park Primary School!

Year 6 Graduation

Room 4 News

This term has been an exciting and busy one for the students in Room 4!

Procedural Writing and Measurement

In our writing sessions, students have been focusing on procedural writing. They learned how to write clear, step-by-step instructions while linking this to measurement. We carried out several fun experiments where students followed procedures and incorporated measurement skills into their activities. Students made Straw Rockets and measured how far they flew. They then had to carefully measure the length the rocket flew. They followed the steps to create their own jelly, measuring out ingredients. Following this, the Dancing Sprinkles experiment was a big hit! Students followed a procedure to make sprinkles and rice "dance" through vibrations, linking their understanding of measurement and the science of how vibrations can create movement. These fun activities helped students connect procedural writing with measurement, showing them how important these skills are in everyday life.

Road Safety Excursion

We also had the opportunity to participate in a Road Safety Excursion. Students learned valuable skills about passenger safety, how to make a Triple Zero call, and the highlight of the day: the mock roadway, where they learned about bike safety. This excursion helped our students become familiar with road signs, pedestrian safety, and important road rules to keep them safe.

Visual Arts: Bush Medicine

In Visual Arts, students explored the shapes, colours, and textures of local eucalyptus tree leaves. We also learned about the significance of these leaves in First Nations Australian culture, as they were used as medicine from ‘nature’s pharmacy.’ Students used the leaves they collected from the school grounds to create beautiful artworks. The process involved several steps: drawing a leaf, blending paint to match the different tones of the leaves, painting the bush floor, and adding finishing touches with white dots, enhancing the beauty of the eucalyptus leaves.

Speech Pathology

Andrea Ferguson is a speech pathologist who visits schools, including LPS. Recently, changes have been made to her schedule for the upcoming year, allowing for the opportunity to accept new students at Lockleys. Currently, there are a few places available for new speech clients, and Andrea has a policy in place to waive the travel fee when working with three or more students from the same school. Additionally, half-hour sessions are offered, in contrast to the standard 45-60 minute sessions provided by many other companies, which often include extra charges for travel and administration. This can result in significant savings for families opting for weekly sessions with TALK Speech Pathology.
